I know some of yall used to work at sprint, tell me if this sounds weird.

so I just moved from Lubbock to Houston, went to a store to change my number, and they said they couldn't change area codes, and gave me a number to call. I called the number, and the person tells me the plans are slightly different, the houston plan has 50 more minutes than my current plan. everything else is the same. then they proceed to tell me that I have to sign a new two year agreement in order to change my area code. i'm sittin here like... WTF. it's a damn value in some database table somewhere. i'm not signing another damn agreement so i guess i'll just keep my lubbock phone # until my current plan is up.

I kept my number all through college (Houston #) and stayed on my family's plan simply because it was cheaper...

I went into the Sprint store and tried to get a new plan with the same # but they said they couldn't do that... What?! I can go to Cingular or Verizon and they'll give me my same number. Stupid.

yeah i'd have done that except we didn't have cell phones in high school

honestly the FCC needs to lay the smackdown on these damn cell phone companies. the rates are terrible, and all the agreements they get you into are BS too. same thing with dish, etc.

what i dont get is how cable TV is always so easy... go to the cable tv store, add/remove service, pick-up/turn-in your box, get prorated, no contract, etc.

ive always wondered the same. ask to speak to a manager at sprint. tell them you are not signing a new two year contract because you are not eligible for a phone upgrade. see if they will give you a phone upgrade. i mean, yeah, youll sign another 2 years, but at least you will have a new phone too ....that is, if you want a new phone right now. otherwise, tell them to blow themselves. sprint sucks

i broke my phone a while back, been waiting on them to send me a replacement. got tired of waiting, and took an older phone of mine in to activate. they tried last time to tell me that in order to switch phones, i had to renew my 2 year contract. told them today in my exact words "i'm not signing your 2 year contract, i know it's bullshit, just turn on this phone and i'm out of here" she was pissed, didn't say a word, but activated my phone and was gone.

Amp'd and Cricket just use the major carrier's networks and are marketed by a few of the major carriers... I think Amp'd is through Sprint actually.

T-Mobile is hit or miss on service. Big cities and major highways, they're great. Anything smaller than Lubbock and you probably won't get service. My company uses T-Mobile simply because it's a German company and their international service is pretty straightforward.

Amp'd is actually run through the Verizon Network

As for cricket, its sort of a hybrid between a local phone company and cellular in that you get unlimited local calling but pay for LD. also the phone usually just works within a particular metropolitan area.

Or you are becoming sane, finally. Waking up. I suppose only a few are aware of all this. Isolated persons here and there. But the broad masses... what do they think? all cell phone companies have shitty service.

it's actually illegal for them not to let you keep your number, if they try and pull that shit ask for the name and number of their district manager, as well as their name. Now, they can charge you for the service -- i think it's something like no more than $50, but i'm not entirely sure if there is a limit -- but they can't force you to use one of their numbers.

Don't Verizon and Sprint use some of the same towers?

I went to go get a new phone because after my contract was up and went month to month, I got an allowance for a new phone. So I upgraded my phone and signed a new contract. No biggie. 6 months later I notice my bill was almost double. They charged me this bullshit $36 phone upgrade fee. I looked into it online, and none of the cell companies disclose this sneaky bullshit fee. I bought my phone in person, so that cost $36. If I had bought it online or over the phone they would have only charged me $18. Needless to say, I called up those assholes, and they were like "oh I'm sorry, its been happening to a lot of people, I'll get it fixed by tomorrow." I call back next week, and talk to some other fuck. He's like well, there's nothing we can do about it and its a phone upgrade fee, and they never even had a log of my previous week's call. I was fucking furious.

Went to the FCC website, and filed a formal complaint. Within a couple weeks, Sprint was calling me about my complaint, and I got my $36 refunded without any bullshit.

wow. i have never heard of anything like that before. I had Sprint for over 4 years, but only 2 years I was under contract. Then, my contract ended and it was either pay more because my plan was no longer offered and then have to deal with a contract or pay $500 for a new phone. I paid the $500 and let me say...it was the best phone I ever owned so it didnt bother me. I miss my Sprint phone. I hate Verizon's interface on their phones. It lacks a lot when compared to Sprint.

Another option, call customer service, and complain that you are receiving harassing phone calls and "they" wont stop calling you and bugging you and whatever, and sprint should change your number, if they wont, just escalate to to a supervisor. smile.gif

No experience myself but many of my coworkers do have experience with them. Most of it dealt with the shoddy phones, customer service, and no service. Plus, every Cricket store her in ABQ has security guards in them because of the gang fights that start out in them... supposedly. The last part is hearsay, but yah. Cricket, IMO, is just... it's like taking a picture of a beach instead of being at the beach... I'unno. It seems sorta scammish.

Regarding Cricket... if you hardly ever leave your local calling area, it's a decent deal, but roaming is a bitch.

I've been reasonably happy with Cingular. I know you can change your number (for instance, once you're in a different area code) without hassle. Overall I've had pretty good customer service with them, just be sure to go into a corporate store (rather than an "authorized retailer") if you need to go in for something, like getting a new phone. The authorized retailers suck monkey balls. I do think they have an $18 phone upgrade fee, though.
