This forum has, over the past several years, been the most abrasive, crude, and oftentimes disturbing forums I have been on.
I'm sure there are meaner ones...but I don't get a kick out of that shit so I wouldnt' know/care, but I am on several other normal forums, and the shit on this site is by far the worst. That is what I have come to expect from techsans.net. Free speach almost to the point of cruelty. Which is why I find it interesting that a Mod deleted someone's comments on that Amber Alert thread in the news forum; apparently the Mod knew the father of the baby. I agree that any comments on that are in poor taste, and not to my liking...but since when the fuck did any of that matter on here? I'm not going to do your homework for you, but you guys have taken countless tragedies and made jokes on them...used fucked up pictures as punchlines, etc. Do I find it offensive? Yeah pretty much daily I am offended by something on here, because I am a sweetheart However since you actually KNOW someone the tragedy is centered around, THAT is when censorship and your moral high road are justified? I call bullshit. You guys can't have it both ways. You cannot be calloused, sick reprobates about most things, then selectively act all mother theresa. Just because you know the guy? Big fuckin deal. rant off |

I have ranted in the past against mostly political figures, Bush in particular.
I don't insults babies that were kidnapped and could have possibly been killed, unlike some assholes on here. You think you're so all knowing cupcake? So high and mighty? I didn't abuse mod powers *technically*. The comments were off topic, and were insulting to a friend/friend's child. I made a judgement call and stand by it. -------------------- |

Here's the options I'm seeing:
1.) I go forum nazi, like you all want, and delete anything and everything offensive. 2.) You people get it through your heads that a friend of mine's child, who had been KIDNAPPED, was insulted. I deleted posts for that reason...they were also off topic, and not pertinent to the discussion/topic. NPR, in it's ideal form, should be a forum for legitimate debate. The others, namely LRAR and Off Topic, are the one's meant for randomness. Sorry, I guess I'm an asshole for sticking up for my friend and his daughter. I agree with it. With me or the rant, Chuck? QUOTE and if you're going to use the off-topic excuse, you got a lot more deleting to do ...guess you're right. -------------------- |

I also don't laugh at some of the other more objectionable material on here. I just ignore it. Insulting...man you guys have insulted everything from troops dying to the attacks on 9/11 to ripping on girls who in a moment of dumbass posted some slutty pics. Dead baby jokes flourish here. But that does not affect *you* directly, so who cares? But once it does...it's all about applying the e-brakes. I call it as I see it...there is a double standard applied. Or perhaps this is the first time some of you realize that just because it's on the web doesn't mean it's a joke. C'MON IT'S JUST THE INTERNET! LIGHTEN UP! is what everyone says. |

i don't want to see a 80 yr old grandma's vagina when i click a forum link that is not why i come here things like that need to be linked and have a description or a warning so if things are going to be deleted and censored then that kind of shit should be the first to go -------------------- "Ah, y'know it's funny, these people they go to sleep, they think everything's fine, everything's good. I don't think it's a double-standard. The NPR forum has typically been more strict in terms of what is and is not acceptable. I think Zach's actions were perfectly justified under the rules of NPR: http://www.techsans.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=78.
LRAR and Off-Topic are undoubtedly the most laid-back forums and very little is moderated in either. NSFW stuff is fair game in LRAR and crude humor is acceptable in both. The vast majority of offensive stuff is posted in these two forums and, subsequently, is not particularly susceptible to moderation. Most of the forums have a thread with rules for the forum. If we need to revisit any of those sets of rules (or the general rules, posted in the Announcements & Feedback forum), we can certainly do so, bearing in mind that there's unlikely to be much change to the modus operandi for LRAR and Off-Topic. -------------------- |

I think this is a bit more tragic than an amber alert that was called off. but because no one here knows those involved, it's just shits and giggles...this was in NPR...the "moderated" forum...and it bothered me greatly. but instead of bitching about it, I just figured fuck it, and let y'all have fun. if I were a Mod, I would not have edited anything in this thread, even though I was bothered. mother microwaves baby double standards usually aren't apparent to those who have them. |

it's not drama. it's just the first time I've witnessed anything on here being off limits.
I like techsans the way it is...immoral, corrosive, etc...or should I say, I like forums to at least be consistent. being able to shred that girl who was killed by her dad because the "thought" she had sex, or mom's microwaving babies is fine, as long as they don't live in lubbock? got it! |

Yeah, I agree with Cupcake. Not that I have been sacred and holy, but I think it to be absolutely disturbing when a tragedy happens and there are people poking fun. I remember posting a story about some women who killed a pregnant mother and then killed her other three kids and left them in the washer and dryer. People were poking fun like crazy. That story still sticks in my head as one of the saddest things I have ever read.
I think there is just a point where its time to grow up and realize that its particularly immature to poke fun of everything. I dont know. I hate going into threads about the Iraq war because thats a somewhat sensive topic for me and I know that Im going to read something that offends me. I guess I started to realize the stupidity of it all when someone posted pics of my cat dead. Call me two-faced, but I guess thats what it took |

Who here actually thinks that anyof those posts about ANYTHING on here are ever serious?
That being said, any of the other posts on here are for the sake of our twisted sense of entertainment, however, Zack knows those people and the post was ment to keep people on alert in case they saw it, because, unlike any of those other things we make fun of, someone very legitimately could have seen something or called in the cops if they thought they could help. in this case it is very much in Zacks power and intrests (helping a family he knows) to delete those comments so that anyone who checked in on it could get what the origional post was about, as opposed to seeing a shit-ton of irrelevent asshat remarks and disregaurding the topic as being a big fucking joke instead of a legit emergency. Is it a double standard? To a point yes. But can ANY of you say you wouldnt do the same thing if you thought it would help someone you knew get their kid back. Some things are more important than our entertainment. -------------------- Brandon....you're the reason I'm pro-choice.

I like techsans the way it is...immoral, corrosive, etc... QFT. I really couldn't have put it any better myself. If the original post was meant to be an extension of the Amber Alert, and not just a normal NPR news item, then I think perhaps it would have been better served going under the local events forum? Oh, by the way, I have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ so please delete any and all negative references to him. Not ragging on you personally P. |

in zach's defense, I can't think of a single post he has made in the past 3 months that has been graphic, disgusting, or in poor taste. While some posters, *cough, Brandon* *cough, myself* *cough, Nick* *Cough, dogmeat* *cough Charlie* *cough Lance* *cough Glenn* *cough Zetech* *cough Will*, do make inappropriate comments and post unwarranted graphic materials, Zach is not one of them.
Therefore as a clean mod who was personally affected by the situation, I feel he had more right than anyone to remove the offending material. -------------------- Je suis toute du merde.

THings that CAN NOT be talked about on this site:
Anything about lance, including but not limited to: 1. Commenting about his posts in NPR which hurt the forum. -Saying anything about other people's comments in that forum would be ok. 2. Making a joke about a new "girl" on the forum by stating females don't exist on the intranet. -Since it happened to be his new mate that = wrong. 3. Arguing a contrary view that lance found stupid (Grant) Lance is owner so, meh, thats how it goes. Don't piss off the man with power, so thats just the way of the world. Other than lance we mostly see mod abuse when it is something that effects the mod in question. -Zetec editing posts because he disagreed with someone (impala i think) -NPR editing because the baby in question was a friend of his. (the comments were still ABOUT that kid. Actually i dont know what the comments were about.. i didn't get to read them) Im sure there is more, but yeah, if you didn't realize there was a double standard you have to be blind. Certain people get by with more, and some people are impervious to jokes because of who they are. Why else has all but like 10 people been left over the years? -------------------- |

I suppose it is a bit of a double-standard, but the fact that he is personally affected is what makes it a breach of conduct. If I found out that you, Charlie, had been randomly mugged and beaten, I certainly wouldn't make a joke about you deserving it for being so girly when you revealed what had happened to you. I would be sympathetic and supportive, because I know you. edit: the reason the girl was name mychael (pronounced mih-kehl) is because that's her father's name. -------------------- Je suis toute du merde.

zach..
i understand your concern for your friend's child if it were my friend i'd have the same feeling but posting it here on techsans probably wasn't a good idea in the first place...this isn't a forum for seriousness most of the threads end up in childish arguments, namecalling, and poking fun -------------------- "Ah, y'know it's funny, these people they go to sleep, they think everything's fine, everything's good. It doesn't matter if it was a friend's child or not. If it was inappropriate it should have been removed.
However, what does matter is that he used the excuse of "Friend's child" to remove it instead of it being inappropriate. Do we remove the fag jokes because Duane is gay? Or the sexist jokes because Jessica, Christine, and Cathryn are women? What about the mexican or black jokes? Where do you cut off the line between personal and inappropriate? Instead of caring that it hits at home, why don't you care about the actual content? I think that the comment should have been removed if it warrented a removal. If it was very inappropriate, then it shouldn't be there. However, it was only removed because your friend (and you via proxy) were involved, then that's just childish and abuse of power. -------------------- ![]() |

so being motivated by compassion for someone you know personally is wrong?? -griseyeux It is if you won't give the exact same treatment to the other types of posts. If you only do something because you have personal investments then, well, I think I've already said how I feel about this. In a position of authority you have two roads you can go down: 1.) You set a standard and follow this. If something is inappropriate then it's gone, regardless if you think it should or shouldn't go. If it's not, then it stays. 2.) You don't have a set standard and you only do things on a personal whim. You make brash decisions and lose respect as that authority figure and jeopardize your position entirely. That's how it goes. -------------------- ![]() |

Yeah, guess I'm a baby for caring about a friend's child who was kidnapped... Yet, you don't care that someone makes a joke about a microwaved baby? Or anything along those lines? Inappropriate vs. Personal Feelings. Again, look at it that way. If it was inappropriate, it deserved to go. If not, then it didn't. Whether or not you are "caring about a friend's child who was kidnapped" is regardless as it doesn't make something worse. -------------------- ![]() |

I agree with cupcake as far as editing the post. Inappropriate comments happen on this board all the time and just because you know the person does not mean those comments will cease to occur. Deleting comments because they personally offend you is even more immature than the person who made those comments because it shows a lack of restraint and an abuse of power. Most of the inappropriate comments on this site are not meant to be taken seriously anyway, and while it is fucked up to poke fun at serious and tragic events (especially when they are close to home) it is bound to happen. Erasing a comment does not delete the action that occurred. Delete all offensive comments or no offensive comments at all. Zach, I am sorry that someone poked fun at a person who you knew.

I personally think that all these negative comments should be removed when said about any tragedy. Cupcake just pointed out that it is selectively enforced as given this case. Everyone should get off their high horse, since they would do the exact thing as Zach.

I can see both sides of the argument. I can see why Zach did it and I don't blame him for it. However, selective editing in general pisses me off.

Theres one thing in that argument that you didnt take into account.....inappropriate is not what matters here...what matters is that, should people have looked at this NPR even half-way seriously before slamming it with shit, it is possible that someone who may have seen something here in town could have DONE SOMETHING ABOUT IT. In all honesty, do you disreguard a thread as legit once you see the dead baby jokes and crap? I sure as hell do. But every now and then there IS a serious thread on here and people in the Techsans community need to ask for help. In this case it is possible that someone on these forums may have seen the incident or have information that could have helped lead to the finding of this child. While I am guilty of inappropriate-ness myself, it does not change the fact that there is a time and a place (even on the OMGLOLEERCOSTERROFLCOPTER INTARWEB) that seriousness is needed, PARTICULARLY when the people on the forum you use are people you mostly know . An amber alert in this area from someone with a legit problem should be something that at least makes a body think about what they put down next. -------------------- Brandon....you're the reason I'm pro-choice.

Everyone should get off their high horse, since they would do the exact thing as Zach. Anyone who says otherwise would be lying. for a summary:: a serious topic asking for help was put in the worst sections of this forum possible, the "anything goes" forum, where even i can't seem to push the boundries too far. common knowledge is that the LRAR is free game for anyone. you can't expect people on this site who have been here for years to suddenly change their behavior and think twice about making an offensive comment where it is almost second instinct to do so without reprocussion. it should have been put in the appropriate place in the first place. 2nd, zach, i love you like a brother, and i understand that this is a personal friend of yours, but i am going to say this bluntly like i always do. you are acting a bit hot headed about this whole thing, and yes, you are abusing your power as mod because you posted the thread in the wrong section and are making others pay for it by deleting their comments instead of moving the thread. with power comes the responsibility to handle that power responsibly. 3rd, any action that zach would have taken in this siuation would have condemned him. a general sending troops to defend a vital area of the battle, which just so happens to be his home town, will get the same "abusing your power for your own self interests" crap -------------------- |

QUOTE In all honesty, do you disreguard a thread as legit once you see the dead baby jokes and crap? I sure as hell do. actually in the years I've been here I've learned to gloss over the nonsubstative posts and not let them irritate me or sidetrack. Once the big-boy reading is done, I then go back for entertainment reasons. There are a lot of smart shits on this forum and if you sift through tubgirl one can find some real insight. Otherwise I'd have moved on a long time ago. let's get something straight...this isn't a bone to pick with Zach. I think he's a rad guy. This is about what I thought this forum was. I think what Zach did was "right" in the wrong/right scheme of things. It just seems that "right" isn't the norm when it comes to appropriateness, and I was just calling it like I see it. I'm all for sensitive issues being handled with a bit more reverence...but only if it's applied judiciously at least in NPR. I know that task might be rough; I imagine being Mod on techsans is akin to driving a herd of spider monkeys to montana...but hey, at least you have 23 other Mods to back you up! |

I have a suggestion...
If people are going to make serious posts....put a disclaimer saying "NO JOKES". I know you shouldn't have to do this but this isn't a serious place. People come here to be dickholes. -------------------- "Ah, y'know it's funny, these people they go to sleep, they think everything's fine, everything's good. If I found out that you, Charlie, had been randomly mugged and beaten, I certainly wouldn't make a joke about you deserving it for being so girly when you revealed what had happened to you. I would be sympathetic and supportive, because I know you. We all would....because it happened to Charlie. Understand that this event did not directly happen to Zach so the personal effect is not there. It didn't hit close to home so some folks won't be concerned. It's sad I know but that is the way of things. -------------------- "Ah, y'know it's funny, these people they go to sleep, they think everything's fine, everything's good. I think the problem is that most of everyone here knows each other and this community, which was meant for uniting Tech students, has now become a close group of friends. There is a major major lack of new members and I honestly think the shit we post scares them away. Yea, you're telling me; everytime I post something that doesn't agree with the the core group of users here it's like, who the fuck are you. It's not the offensive posts, it's the nonstop unacceptance of new people that don't agree with the group. |

found the baby, some crazy lady had jacked it from the hospital (hospital's fault imho) to take and show her bf in NM and tell him he was the father. they extradited the chick to lubbock and that's where we stand right now. yeah i couldn't believe it was that easy to take the kid. my mom works at a hospital in plano, and only certain people have access to the maternity ward, even fewer to the room where they keep newborns. it's also a "hidden" area with one exit so you can't sneak in and out. my brother (the cop) also deals a lot with the hospital in steamboat, and he said it's the same way, they even have RFID badges to monitor the access. |

Sounds like Lubbock hospitals need to step up their security measures |

for a summary:: a serious topic asking for help was put in the worst sections of this forum possible, the "anything goes" forum, where even i can't seem to push the boundries too far. common knowledge is that the LRAR is free game for anyone. you can't expect people on this site who have been here for years to suddenly change their behavior and think twice about making an offensive comment where it is almost second instinct to do so without reprocussion. it should have been put in the appropriate place in the first place. 3rd, any action that zach would have taken in this siuation would have condemned him. a general sending troops to defend a vital area of the battle, which just so happens to be his home town, will get the same "abusing your power for your own self interests" crap so....how did I post the thread in the wrong area? I kind of think a news article should be posted in the appropriate section, you know...'News, Politics, Religion.' -------------------- |

i am sure in the general fecal scheme of things that no one gives two shits about my thoughts, but everyone else is talking . . .
yeah, maybe what zack did was wrong, but it is not like we entered an era of dictatorial mod censorship. it is obviously in the minority of occurrences. If people here are so easily able to shrug off disgusting pictures and other lewd comments, why is it so hard to blow off one small post editing? yeah, i know the dad too, maybe not as well as zack, but i know him. i think he is a cool guy, but i don't really edit things like that because i don't think they resolve anything. it is more important to use words and reason against others' words. if we just jump to action and censorship, then nothing gets resolved and we establish (unstable) power hierarchies. the real question here is not whether or not zack did something wrong, but whether or not there should be a new specific process/criteria list for modding in general. and do not try to presume that the modding of one person accounts for the state of the entire board. i don't mod anything for offensiveness, because i rarely find anything that offending. it usually just makes me laugh that sort of awkward "oh what the hell" laugh. but what if we deleted your posts (jessica and zack) making fun of cathryn, because she is ill informed. instead of mocking her, you should provide helpful information to bring her up to speed. is that really what you people want the forums to be like? a joyless wasteland of sheer data exchange? and alex do you really think this board is a group of friends? it seems more like groups of passive enemies, though there are small "cliques" that can overlap. i think the only thing we are united in is our dissidence and maybe that is enough. |
