Remember, this is high school, when most people start to question their sexuality. Allowing students to use gay as a synonym for "bad" isn't really the best way to create a welcoming environment for teenagers who want to come out of the closet. There's a reason why suicide rates and depression rates are so high among gay teenagers.

There's a reason why suicide rates and depression rates are so high among gay teenagers. that's because they're gay, not because someone makes an out of context reference to something else saying "man that's gay". gay people have been around forever. why is this just now coming up? phrases like "that's gay" have been in use ever since I remember. |

QUOTE Rick Ayers, a retired teacher who helped compile and publish the "Berkeley High School Slang Dictionary," a compendium of trendy teen talk circa 2001, said educating students about offensive language is preferable to policing their speech. "I wouldn't be surprised if this girl didn't even know the origin of that term," he said. "The kids who get caught saying it will claim it's been decontextualized, but others will say, `No, you know what that means.' It's quite talked about." What, that it means "lively" or "cheerful"? That's the word's original damn meaning. This post has been edited by Spectatrix: Mar 2 2007, 11:57 PM -------------------- |

this may sound retarded but I think there is a difference between the words gay and homosexual just like there is a difference between the words black and african american.
I find the word gay offensive in and of itself, but I know homosexual people who do not mind defining themselves as gay. and I can remember as far back as freshman year in high school (1999) hearing people respond "that's so gay." I'm not saying that that is ok; just saying that most people aren't thinking about it's reference to homosexuals when they say it even though they should be conscious of it. FYI: One of the funniest guys I know is a homosexual who uses the phrase "that's so gay" all the time. I think what alex meant was not that homosexuality is becoming a trend, but that their is a rising stereotypically gay behavior pattern that is becoming more prevalent. And I have to say that I agree. The more that gay icons such as the fab five, bobby trendy and steven kojocaru have gained press, the more I have seen young gay men feel the need to don lip gloss and speak with a lisp. not all, obviously, but more than I had seen before being "gay" gained so much attention. -------------------- Je suis toute du merde.

Spec, the word "lively" and "cheerful" no longer apply to the word gay. The meanings of words change over time. The original meaning of the word is irrelevant.
While I don't agree with using the word "gay" as an insult, I don't think that speech control should be enforced. That is why we have the first amendment. Of course they still apply. that is still the #1 meaning of the word. just look it up on websters, oxford, or any dictionary online. the first meaning is always the "happy" one. just because it's "slang" for homosexual now doesn't mean the word has changed. it's only been that way for 20-30 years, when previously it was probably there for hundreds. plus, it's still used in literature. and think about this... why did the word "gay" end up meaning "homsexual?" it's because of the true definition, "cheerful, happy," etc. -------------------- ![]() |

FYI - if I were straight, I could get plenty of pussy. Are you telling me that things like the fab five aren't contributing to a fad? Haven't you heard phrases like it's fashionable to be gay? I'm seeing it become more of a hip thing to do than a real part of someone's lifestyle....like being "metrosexual". There's nothing fashionable about being gay. It's a part of society that's always been there and will always be there. The only thing that's changed is society's perception of homosexuality. The fab five are nothing but a commercial pandering to fag hags who want their men to act more comfortable in their sexuality. Nothing more. I think what alex meant was not that homosexuality is becoming a trend, but that their is a rising stereotypically gay behavior pattern that is becoming more prevalent. And I have to say that I agree. I would disagree. That is a result of society becoming more accepting of homosexuality. Thus, young people feel more able to express their sexuality. QUOTE this may sound retarded but I think there is a difference between the words gay and homosexual just like there is a difference between the words black and african american. I find the word gay offensive in and of itself, but I know homosexual people who do not mind defining themselves as gay. I don't think I've ever met a single gay person who would prefer to be called a "homosexual" to being called "gay." Homosexual is such a clinical word. And I know why the word gay was taken on by homosexuals. Thanks for making assumptions. QUOTE just look it up on websters, oxford, or any dictionary online. the first meaning is always the "happy" one. just because it's "slang" for homosexual now doesn't mean the word has changed QUOTE In addition to its original and continuing senses of “merry, lively†and “bright or showy,†gay has had various senses dealing with sexual conduct since the 17th century. A gay woman was a prostitute, a gay man a womanizer, a gay house a brothel. This sexual world included homosexuals too, and gay as an adjective meaning “homosexual†goes back at least to the early 1900s. After World War II, as social attitudes toward sexuality began to change, gay was applied openly by homosexuals to themselves, first as an adjective and later as a noun. Today, the noun often designates only a male homosexual: gays and lesbians. The word has ceased to be slang and is not used disparagingly. Homosexual as a noun is sometimes used only in reference to a male. Source: Dictionary.com -------------------- A psychotic world we live in. The madmen are in power. How long have we known this? you know, all growing up people called me "weda" (the real spelling im unsure of) which means Whitey. If you think about it, thats offensive, but if we all get soooo hurt by what people say then we are losing our backbones. There are things that should not be said.... racial slurs meant demeaningly, but in this context she was not demeaning gay people. If she walked up to a queer and straight up called him a faggot, then yes. People need to change their diapers and grow a backbone. She wasnt ridiculing anyone; in fact, quite the opposite...she was being ridiculed. Kids have no shame. I will not ever send my child to a public school. The school system in America continues to decline. We wonder why kids commit suicide? SHUT UP PEBKAC! Its not because children fear expressing their sexuality. Its rather because children are ridiculed for their looks and their personality. Most kids dont come out until after high school anyways which is a good thing. Thats a grown up decision in my opinion...because yes, it is becoming more and more of a fad

thats exactly the context that I hear it in all the time, and even if I were gay that wouldnt offend me. To go off what Spivey said: Yes, language is fluid. The word "gay" can now be used to describe undesirable occurrances.

No one can ever know the kinds of horrible things your kind must have gone through. On behalf of all gay men, please accept my sincerest apology for all that you've been through. QUOTE If you think about it, thats offensive, but if we all get soooo hurt by what people say then we are losing our backbones. There are things that should not be said.... racial slurs meant demeaningly, but in this context she was not demeaning gay people. Thats a grown up decision in my opinion...because yes, it is becoming more and more of a fad Spoken just like someone who's never had to come out of the closet before. The biggest problem with coming out of the closet isn't so much other people as it is overcoming your own internal homophobia. Using gay as a synonym for bad reinforces that homophobia, thus making coming out of the closet more difficult, thus upping depression and suicide rates. Secondly, I don't think I've ever met a single homo who wished that they'd come out of the closet later. Being in the closet isn't fun. That's why we try to come out as soon as we can. And lastly, no, being gay isn't a fad. If someone were to decide that they were gay because it's fashionable, they should be shot. But that's kind of a moot point because no one really decides to become gay. It's a lifestyle we're forced to live with. so, raise your hand if you're really offended if you overhear someone saying "man that's so gay". in this context: person 1: dude did you hear, they raised tuition on us! person 2: man that's so gay Not offended, but yes extremely annoyed. Been to El Paso? Oh, I grew up in a border town that was 90% hispanic. Yes, I've been the target of racism against whites myself. My point is that there's no over-arching movement against white, straight people at a societal level. -------------------- Holy shit, pebkac, you're awesome! We wonder why kids commit suicide? SHUT UP PEBKAC! Its not because children fear expressing their sexuality. Its rather because children are ridiculed for their looks and their personality. Most kids dont come out until after high school anyways which is a good thing. This comment I have to slightly disagree with. Gay teens are shown by studies to have higher rates in suicide than heterosexual teens. It is a VERY difficult thing to grow up hearing how wrong, and dirty and foul you are. I have a friend who was exorcised....yes, i said exorcised as in what the Catholic Church does to get Satan out of your ass...and it fucked him up majorly. I don't know too many straight teenagers who are told they need to be sent to a counselor because they like the opposite sex. As for the gay for fad thing.....that's just laughable. Queer Eye for the Straight Guy and all those shows are BAD BAD BAD examples, because they show gay men as asexual fashionistas. Guess what...fags like sex just as much as heteros, and there are PLENTY of gays who don't know shit about what shoes look good with your purse and what paint will accentuate your furniture. Hell...my ex decorated his loft with airplanes and sports memorabilia...and he sucked cock. So, while there may be A FEW who choose to act gay for the attention and to be fashionable, the majority of gays are that way because they just are... |

Oh, I grew up in a border town that was 90% hispanic. Yes, I've been the target of racism against whites myself. My point is that there's no over-arching movement against white, straight people at a societal level. yes there is....I dont know what border town you grew up in, but most Mexicans in El Paso wont even speak to a white person, much less associate with one. I worked as a volunteer for the Red Cross in El Paso at an army hospital. I was one of the few that were VOLUNTEERING. Several low-income hispanic kids were hired for pay because of their income level. I did my duties and they did theirs. One day, I was pulled into my boss's office where she told me that I needed to leave for the day. Apparently (found this out later in the day), the fact that I was white (and yes, that is exactly what the hispanic department head said) was making the hispanic kids uncomfortable. I left and they asked me not to come back. My dad filed a complaint with the general stationed at Ft Bliss and it became a pretty big deal. I received a letter of apology from William Beaumont Army Medical Center and a certificate of completion of volunteer work from the Red Cross. Thats what I fucking hate. Gay people, black people, mexican people who think that they have some huge struggle in society these days which is exactly why it sucks to be a white male or female with qualifications these day. Less qualified people earn positions based on their gender/race/etc. Its ridiculous. The way I see it is, black people had more than enough amo for complaining up until the 80's. Nowdays, however, some African American kids imagine in their heads that they are victims of societal discrimination when in MOST cases that is not true (of course there are still areas of the country that are rampant with racism to which I am not addressing) and they are racist towards white people who have had nothing to do with the struggle of their ancestors. Mexicans (speaking of the ones who come here illegally or the women that cross the border to pop out a baby who is them termed legal citizen...not the ones here legitimately) cross our borders, take advantage of our healthcare and education systems, and flood the job market... oh then they cry RACISM RACISM RACISM...MEXICAN STRUGGLE WAH WAH WAH... shut the fuck up. Honestly, a lot of that has very little to do with gay people, but you brought up societal movements. I can see where coming out would be a huge struggle because many are still discriminatory towards gays, but that is becoming less and less with each passing day. How about the term "bitching" when used in reference to someone complaining? Thats not very offensive...just slang; however, use the word "bitch" and it then becomes offensive. In my opinion the same can be said of the word "gay". Call someone gay: offensive.... "thats so gay" slang but not offensive. Dictionary.com definition of bitch
*disclaimer: I dont know what the PC terms are these days for Mexican-Americans, African-Americans, and homosexuals. Please take no offense to any terms used in the above statement. None of it is meant to be discriminatory, and most comments are based on generarlizations and do not reflect the attitude of the entire population of a community.* I have to add that in there so that I dont get bombarded by people saying OMG SO RACIST. Im not. Im making simple generalizations. |

Many openly gay people will admit to sexual abuse when they were younger. Maybe thats what causes a rise in suicide rates? You see what Im saying? You cannot make a correlation like: Being a gay teenager means you are more at risk for committing suicide... unless you take into account the upbrining of said gay teenager. Im sure studies have been done regarding this, but I havent read up on them. Maybe there is a solid correlation between the two, but I havent heard that. In the example you gave, yes, it was the ridicule associated with being gay that caused higher stress, but like I said many out of the closet gays have admitted to being sexually molested as children. *please note that I said "many" not "most" or "all"* |

The problem is that I don't think female dogs are a portion of the population that has been struggling for equality. If that were the case, I would oppose the use of the word bitch as well. this may or may not apply to you or pebkac... that is not part of my point so please dont take offense to what Im about to say: Suicidal rates among homosexual males and lesbian girls might have little to do with their sexuality and more to do with their upbringing. For what you say to be true, there would have to be a correlation between sexual abuse and sexuality, which there isn't. I mean sure, upbringing does have a huge effect, but it has a huge effect on everything psychologically. It's like saying that schizophrenia isn't as big a problem because some people can deal with it better due to their upbringing. I do understand what Im getting at. I'll lay it out in statements. Duane said: Suicide among gay teenagers is higher than among straight teenagers due to the anxiety associated with coming out and/or the response of the teenager's peers (ie ridiculing) I say: There could be other factors associated with the increased suicide rates in homosexual teenagers. In other words, not the fact that they are homosexual but what led them to that lifestyle. What percentage of homosexual teenagers were abused as children? What percentage of homosexual teenagers did not receive adequate bonding time with a same-sex member of their family? I could ask a bunch of other questions....but hopefully by now you catch my drift... Maybe the stress associated with coming out of the closet causes higher suicide rates OR Maybe there is a underlying cause-and-effect relationship between the upbringing of homosexual teenagers and suicide rates. Maybe correlation was the wrong term... I substituted it with cause-and-effect relationship |

yes, gays and minorities are abused in society. In the lions den though, its often reverse that. On the border towns and in SF, the roles are reversed. The problem is that these are the people that are usually most accepting of the differences are the ones abused. Maybe correlation was the wrong term... I substituted it with cause-and-effect relationship All I can really say is you can't understand it because you didn't live through it. I had a shitty upbringing, and I never thought of suicide. I had a friend who had a GREAT upbringing, and he didn't just THINK of committing suicide....HE DID IT. I've always been very headstrong about who I am....some are not so lucky. Imagine being barraged day after day with the message that as a human being you are evil....you're sick in the head. It will drive you to do some fucked up things. Some people don't go for suicide....some instead go for drugs and risky sex. Also, I am tired of hearing being gay as referred to as a lifestyle. Do you consider your loving of the opposite sex a lifestyle? Is everything you do in relation to your love-life? If you wanna talk about lifestyles, then you think of it as a gay man who decided to be a partier and druggie.....or a heterosexual girl who decided to be a slut and sleep with every man she sees. THOSE are lifestyles....your sexual preference is NOT a lifestyle. Let me clarify, because you can RE-READ what i typed....I never said, "Suicide among gay teenagers is higher than among straight teenagers due to the anxiety associated with coming out and/or the response of the teenager's peers (ie ridiculing)" I said that suicide rates are higher amongst gay teens. I never put any "due to" clause in there. I merely put the two conditions there....you drew the conclusion for yourself. And in all honesty, even if you went out and ran an experiment as a 'lesbian' you wouldn't have it quite as hard...because girls who are gay are certainly more accepted than two men who love each other. |

That's semantics...
the words gay and homosexual are interchangeable....just as heterosexual and straight. Being who you are is not a lifestyle choice. But, nonetheless...enlighten me on how you see gay as the lifestyle. |

Well when I use the term lifestyle I'm not using it like the political understanding of it that most douche head conservatives use. It's more technical.

I see your point....however to me, as a gay person, I don't see being gay in itself as a lifestyle....I see the specifics of how I live as the lifestyle....so if I decided to be a partier, thats my lifestyle.....if i decided to find a single man and settle down, thats my lifestyle. Make sense?
I personally don't like the term homosexual/heterosexual, because it implies that everything boils down to sex... |
