I trust a bunch of silly conservationist scientists who have their own agenda about as much as I trust Bush... in other words, I dont really think that the President would do that. I more think that these scientists are nutballs. Additionally, if they were in fact changed, why are we so quick to blame Bush instead of blaming someone in his administration who could have done this without Bush knowing. But, America needs a good scapegoat so it might as well be Bush.

Naturally, I don't think Bush changed these documents himself. He lacks the expertise and the time to be concerned with such things. However, I am sure that someone high up in the administration, congress, etc had a hand in it. Being a scapegoat is part of the presidency. Presidents have virtually NO control over the economy. Yet, they get blamed or credited for a good economy. Classic example is president Clinton taking the credit for the booming economy of the mid to later 90's. In reality, he had virtually no control or impact on the economy himself.

You are right, however the president is assumed to be the most powerful political figure in America, if not the world. Plus, presidents have a lot more power then they had say fifty years ago. Presidents practically set the agenda for congress, send plans for the annual U.S. budget, send the military anyone in the world with the stroke of a pen, and ultimately destroy the world with Nuclear weapons (the president and the president alone has this ultimate power). He is both the ceremonial and political leader of the United States. He is the queen and prime minister of england wrapped up in one happy partisan box.

uh i think it should be way more of a priority then it is. its no longer about how our grandchildren's lives will be its affecting our own. in 20 years i dont want my water bill to be 100bucks a month and people syphoning my gas in the middle of the night. not to mention its getting too hot already and the crazy changing extreme weather isnt fun

People are worried about the rate of change of average earth temp. I know in the 1800's europe spewed tons of hydrocarbons into the atmosphere and raised the local temp. I have no reliable data or experience in this area.

Yeah, better be safe than sorry, but Im not going to stop using hair spray because it hurts the ozone (not that that applies to me because I dont use aerosol hairspray, but still). The precautions we should be taking are things like not dumping shit in the oceans, lakes, and rivers or chopping down the rainforest. You know? stuff that is significant that we could stop but chose not to.



Additionally (not directed at you Spivey), but what have any of you done to alter your lifestyles for the betterment of the planet? I would like to know. I mean, are you all just bitching again without taking action or do you actually make efforts to conserve this planet's resources? Inquiring minds want to know

global warming is highly speed up due to air pollution. thats common knowledge and the affect is great

i do my part by recycling, i cant do much about what car i drive other than to drive as little as possible, i use environmentally safe detergents, cleaners, and hygiene products and items made from recycleables. i try to conserve energy as much as i can which also relates to my appliances and what detergents i use. i vote for environomentally specific propositions i support and candidates whom i believe will work towards these.

Being environmentally conscious in Lubbock is mighty difficult for many reasons.

1. We don't have a local recycling plant, all our recyclables are SHIPPED by TRUCK to DALLAS. Which in of itself produces a shitload of pollutants.

2. The public transportation in this city is a joke. If you do not own a car you cannot get anywhere. period.

3. The city is so shittily designed that walking anywhere is dangerous and unheard of.

4. Being a conservative and hick town, don't expect any help from your neighbors when you ask them to help you clean up trash around your apartment complex/neighborhood etc. or anything to that effect.


My point is that many cities don't even make a conscious effort to provide these sorts of things for their citizens, so how can citizens preform any improvements without any tools with which to do them? I'm thinking in a smaller town like Lubbock it would have to be some sort of privately funded endeavor.

i find lubbock very clean. thats the first thing my parents always say when they come here. i dont know about lubbock not having a recycling center closer than dallas but if its not a recycling center than its a massive recycling collection warehouse on ash avenue. recycling even after having it shipped somewhere still helps

I never said our city wasn't clean. It's one of the cleanest (as far as air quality is concerned) in the nation but that also has a lot to do with our environment. High winds and no elevation means any pollution we produce is just blown away and left to its own devices.

Well right now I don't have any choice but to drive just about everywhere. I have a freakin' 40-minute commute to work and there isn't anything I can do about that. However, once I get a real job, I hope to find an apartment complex located such that I could bike to work, grocery stores, etc. to get more exercise and cut down on pollution.

I drive everywhere. I dont ever cut back driving. First off, I work 30 minutes from my apt. Then, to get to my classes at UT, its about another hour drive. I drive like 2 hours a day. I'll be honest: the environment has never crossed my mind and never will while Im driving. We dont live in fuckin villages anymore. Driving is somewhat of a necessity.

in the future id like to live in a city thats more pedestrian friendly in their city planning. even in austin i plan to live near campus for grad school if i end up there. i enjoyed being able to ride my bike to campus but i cant help having to move.
if i was awesome and got to tell my parents i wanted a car and theyd get me one id ask for either a hybrid, an alternative fuel, or a golf gti higher fuel efficiency automobile. i think itll be awhile before my dad gives his approval to the current hybrid vehicles

The only technologically feasable solution to stop wide-scale production of greenhouse gasses is getting rid of all the coal-fired power plants in the world. Coal-fired power plants are responsible for over half of the greenhouses produced by man. Why do we use coal? Because it's dirt cheap, and the waste is "easier" to deal with than that of nuclear byproducts from a nuclear plant.

However, we all know good and well that the grade of fuel required for sustainable nuclear power generation can also relativley easily be transformed into nuclear fuel for bombs.

Hence forth, the USs' efforts to do everything humanly possible to keep nuclear power generation out of piss ant countries like north korea and Iran. It's pretty much a given that if a country has the capability to produce sustainable nuclear power, they can probably find some way to come up with a bomb.

However, nuclear power COULD be the world's answer to global warming. It's the only feasable power source that can drive a hydrogen economy.

The problem? As I stated above, rogue states claiming they want civilian nuclear power generation (yeah right) and replacing all of our power generation from coal to nuclear will mean we're generating a SHITLOAD of radioactive waste. So we'll be saving the atmosphere but we'll be degrading our groundwater and god only knows what else as well as giving islamic extremists more capability to produce nuclear bombs.

hence why at the present juncture in time I'll take greenhouse gasses for 1000 alex!

I will be totally honest, I don't do a great deal. My car is a Honda civic, which by it's very nature gets good gas mileage so I guess that helps. I usually leave the lights off in my apartment because I have a skylight. At night I relax with some candles and the ambient glow of my computer screen. I have also been keeping my gas usage down as much as possible. I think that it is important for citizens to do whatever they can, but corporations and government entities need to organize and bear the brunt of the responsibilities (after all, corporations are people too).

Proliferation of nuclear power is a very bad idea. While Nuclear power is less pollutant than greenhouse gases, when a nuclear power plant melts down it is great fun. You may be saying that there have not been many serious failures, but as current plants continue to age and more are created the incidence of serious catastrophes will increase. Also, the toxic waste which is produced by nuclear power plants takes MILLIONS of years to break down. There is not an easy solution to this problem...

In the US alone, the DOE acknowledges that there are "millions of gallons of radioactive waste" as well as "thousands of tons of spent nuclear fuel and material" and also "huge" quantities of contaminated soil and water. The Fernald site in Florida for example had "31 million pounds of uranium product", "2.5 billion pounds of waste", "2.75 million cubic yards of contaminated soil and debris", and a "223 acre portion of the underlying Great Miami Aquifer had uranium levels above drinking standards".

i dont think its such a major problem. i think nuclear power would greatly outweigh the risks which i still consider miniscule. theres only so much radiation a glove gives off even for the amount of waste they have

but i do agree nuclear power may not be feasible now because for all the people around the world that hate us, blowing up a brand new nuclear reactor would be a good idea. and i dont trust the government to properly know how to protect against something like that.
