whats the deal with all the people registering just to spam up the boards? i dont want naked pix or free videos.
i was thinking of ways to combat it. 1. they always seem to post in off topic. is there a way to do it so new threads in off topic have to be approved? not all posts but just new topics because it seems like they start new threads... it would suck for everyone else but if we could do it for just new posts in just off topic i think it wouldnt be too bad 2. make it so you have to have a postcount of 10 or something before youre allowed to post a new topic. people who are looking for places to spam will be discouraged if they have to come up with ten random crap posts before they can make a new topic of spam. just my two -------------------- Forget regret

I concur with the second idea. I think these are just bots anyway, so that alone should get rid of them. The first we could implement if the second doesn't fix the problem.
Alternately, if there's a hack/mod to prevent bot registration (the "type the code seen in the box below" sort of thing), that might work too. -------------------- |

The second idea is wonderful. The first one would be awful. I dont want to have to wait for a mod to get on to approve the new topic.

Yeah, IPB should come with a captcha that you can enable to prevent automated registrations.

I think Lance should have a back-up admin to help take care of situations like this when he's busy. I nominate Christine.

Well, mods can move threads, so I think that's sufficient. Lance doesn't really need a second admin. -------------------- |

seriously doubt Lance wants another admin. He bought the site, and probably doesn't want to share ownership or admin priviledges. i know i wouldn't

1. I hate captcha
2. There's a much easier way to deal with spam. You have a div, name it something like "email2". Inside of the div you place a textbox, call it "email2" or something like that. In your CSS you set the properties of that div to hidden, making it invisible to people viewing the site (maybe add a note so that people using text based browsers know what it's there for) If that textbox gets filled in by something, it is more than likely a robot trying to spam. If not, then it's a normal user. Spam robots are dumb, take advantage of that, instead of having people type more... -------------------- "There is a level of cowardice lower than that of the conformist: that of the fashionable non-conformist." |

That'll work, just make sure you delete the billion spammers that are already signed up.

Whatever you do, don't throw a wii controller at your monitor in order to hit them!
-------------------- A psychotic world we live in. The madmen are in power. How long have we known this? Faced this? And--how many of us do know it? Perhaps if you know you are insane then you are not insane. Or you are becoming sane, finally. Waking up. I suppose only a few are aware of all this. Isolated persons here and there. But the broad masses... what do they think? All these hundreds of thousands in this city, here. Do they imagine that they live in a sane world? Or do they guess, glimpse, the truth...?
