ok ok please hear me out...
if you could have any job in the world, and make a comfortable living (say 75-100 grand), what would it be? you can't say "sitting on my ass playing halo" as that isn't a job, unless I guess you were doing it as a tester for a software company. I mean a real job. I watched American Beauty for the first time since it was in the theaters and thought it was interesting that once he had his money (1yr salary from his Ad job), the job he chose to do was flipping burgers...yet he was stoked on it. what would you do? (this is the first question in a two-part deal). |

I'd love to be Director of R&D (or some alternately-titled but equivalent position) for a company involved in robotics. BUT, I'd only enjoy doing that if I had the chance to get my hands dirty and get involved with some of the projects (on an occasional basis) rather than just overseeing everything.
giant robots. What's your major? Maybe I'll call you up when I start my mech company. -------------------- |

QUOTE Do you ever watch those passport to europe or exotic travel shows on pbs and the travel network? id love to be one of those people. travel to europe or random parts of india, asia, africa, south america everywhere for 4-5 times a year and get paid buttloads to do it. oh heeeeeeelllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll yeah... those people have it made. for some reason I'm thinking those are a who ya know kind of job... so divergent liked being a gamestore clerk...that's interesting and kinda what I'm getting at. I mean ANYTHING... I really enjoyed working at this skate/s.board shop in new york. hands-down my most enjoyable job ever. loved the atmosphere, working with passionate like-minded people (yes, girls too), loved selling the product and helping uninitiated or new people learn about shit and what was appropriate for their level. loved stocking...ripping open new shipments and being the first to dick with the stuff and calling dibs on it before it even went on the shelf, etc. ________________________ the second part is, try to brainstorm a way in which you could acutally do those jobs and make the kind of living you want. how can you do your dream job and make money? is it feasible? can you develop a plan? I've heard "do what you love and the money will follow" my whole life, but I guess I've just never had the balls to do it hardcore. |

Yes. Photographers for big time publications make big time bank. However, it's very hard to get your foot in the door and now a lot of these places are hiring freelancers instead of keeping photographers on staff. I think exposing some of the things we ignore in both our own country and in others would be great. Yeah, I may carry a piece if I did end up doing that. -------------------- "There is a level of cowardice lower than that of the conformist: that of the fashionable non-conformist." |

again, something ive been thinking a lot about lately seeing as how soon i might actually have the opportunity to really work for the job and not the money. im having a horrible time thinking about if i could do anything for the rest of my life and not worry about money what would it be. i guess the things i like doing i can always find a reason that i couldnt do them the rest of my life.
lately ive been really interested in cake decorating. but i dont think that once i learned all the advanced stuff i would want to do it as an occupation. same thing with the culinary stuff - i love to cook, but only when im in the mood and for what i want to make, so the whole restaurant thing prolly wouldnt work out for me either. id like to take a few cake decorating classes, but really only to sharpen my skills so i can make stuff for like friends and family. though i have a friend with a cake decorating business and she seems to love it, so who knows. music would be neat to get into. traveling with a band as they toured the us. but that lifestyle isnt really what i want because it wouldnt allow me to start a family. i love live music and concerts but i dont want to do bitch roadie work and theres not a whole lot i could do in a stationary location unless i did promotions for a recording label or something. that might be a good compromise because id be in one city but still getting to mingle with the musicians too. id like to work with animals but not as a vet. i mean yeah id love to help cure their problems, but the whole medical arena just isnt my thing. i dont really want to work at a pet store because i absolutely hate the idea of selling pets when so many are waiting to be adopted. plus i dont want to make a career out of cleaning up dog crap. maybe an animal behaviorist/trainer, but not if it got too much into the science side of it. goes back to the medical stuff, just not interested in science. i guess since i want to start a family i could do the whole housewife thing and just raise the children. but i didnt go to school for 3.5 years and spend my parents money so i could bear children and make sandwiches. its really driving me nuts because pr is such a broad field and theres so much i can do with my degree. it almost makes it harder because here i am going ok i dont want to work for an agency, i dont want to do political campaigns and i dont really want to do nonprofit. theres still a lot open but im just not finding the job ops anywhere. maybe ill just work at united the rest of my life. also, im a firm believer in changing careers. who says at 21 i have to choose my job for the rest of my life? thats gonna be a miserable 40 years. best to find something i love now and then when the passion wears off find something else to focus on. im not looking to be rich and im not looking for a rich man to marry. i just want to have enough to afford what we want (nothing extravagant) but i dont want the money to come at the expense of happiness. -------------------- Forget regret

Yeah, I'm kind of with Rocky on this one. I couldn't sit in the same career forever and be happy, even if it was something I enjoyed. I'd need something new after a couple years or so. Unrealistic? Maybe, but I've found that once I've done a job for a while, I learn all there is to it and become bored with repetition. Of course, it could also be that I don't know what I enjoy, which sucks if it's true.
Anyway, I'm looking for that Oh Snap gif image with the kid and the candy bar. That's why I came here and this seems to be a hot topic. Help me out please. -------------------- Spam? Isn't that something poor people eat?

Interesting question, of course I have several answers to it.
I would like to write for a living out of the home. I would get up every morning, finish off some rum and coffee, then start writting. Then I would smoke a couple of joints and write some more. Sounds like a great life to me. I would also like to be a freelance journalist Or win the lottery and travel around europe and the united states in a convertable Running a bar would also be nice. -------------------- A psychotic world we live in. ok i got it. i want to do something with animals along the lines of rescuing. i want to be rich enough one day to donate to all the animals out there that need it. the thing that upsets me the most in the world is animal cruelty. not that things like poverty and stds arent important, but animals are at a disadvantage in that they dont know better and they have the capacity to understand. animals have no idea how to be other than what humans make them. animals that are abused are the most defenseless creatures in the world, and it hurts my heart to read the stories and see the pictures. i think then thats its my calling to work with animals and somehow see if i cant make a difference even if its a small one.

i'm not sure about bars, but my men's health last issue painted a pretty dim view of owning a restaurant. said something like a 75% failure rate, and that if you're "successful" you'll still lose money for the first 4 years or so.

altering mine a bit:
Professional MMA fighter. So many opportunities have opened up to me and the other members of the fight time. We will get to train with Dan Henderson and Paul Buentello several times in the next few months. One of my trainers has a contact within K1-Hero (K1's MMA organization) and he's sending a rep to watch us train soon. Yeah, I'll go to grad school to get my Masters in International Affairs and eventually seek my PhD, but I'm going to take time off after getting my bachelor's so I can pursue this reachable dream. -------------------- |

I've already had my dream job, except for the 75k-100k part. Being a professional brewer is awesome. If I won the lotto or something, I'd be brewing again.
