http://www.newsvine.com/_news/2006/10/31/4...ms-kerry-remark

He's generalizing and it's just to dig at Republicans with.

Not everyone know that's in Iraq has a college education but some of them didn't want to go to college and others went to college but wanted to go into the military.

I know you don't like what Kerry said, but sadly it's true for the majority. Not everyone, but the majority.

But it's always been this way. There have always been recruiters in high school, this is not a recent phenomenon.

kerry's an idiot. and who the hell wants to be an officer? unless you're a pilot (which I am exempt from), I can't find one job I would want to do. no offense, if you want to make it a career, sure zeros are the way to go...but for 4 years? too much BS politicking to deal with.

scout sniper, assault climber, scout swimmer, EOD/UDT, marksmanship instructor, smallboat coxswain, etc...all enlisted.

some people just want to do something for a few years while they're young then go to college debt-free.

graduated HS at 17. how lame would it be to be in college underage the 4yrs and having only seen lubbock, amarillo, and various ski resorts?

being a 22yr old freshman who's been around the block was pretty rad. plus since you've gotten alot of shit out of your system, I'd wager you make better grades than the average kid being away from home for the first time. more discipline, etc. I know I did.

Who's John Kerry?

anyhow... I don't think it's so much of kids "can't navigate the educational system" as "kids want an easy buck and dont want to have to pay for their own living expenses and then go oh shit there's a war now what".

I don't know first hand about the military, just from my dad but being an officer/career military dude sounds pretty nice considering the pension and benefits he has that I still am able to mooch off of.

A college degree won't save you're from bad engrish.

But on a different note, the EE's i know who were ex military are usually pretty badass about staying on task.

John Kerry is literally as big of douche bag that has ever graced the US senate floor.

The guy is a fucking forked-tongue slimeball elitist pig ... you KNOW he was thinking, and meant, exactly what he said....All the spin he can put on it isn't gonna change that fact.

The bottom line is, there are probably just as many highly intelligent people in the military as there are in college. I've met some real idiots in college classes before, and I've met some highly intelligent and capable people in the army, navy, air force, marines, etc....who were competent enough to make the decision for themselves to join the military of their own accord.

No, you don't have to be in MENSA to be in the military, but you can't be a complete and total dumbfuck either. You have to be trainable, or people get killed. This takes intelligence.

I have infinatley more respect for people who are in the military, even if all they are is a fucking cook, than an elitist snob son of a bitch like Kerry who was born with a silver spoon up his ass and who has never had to work for a fucking thing in his life and was born into politcs.

tell us how you really feel dogmeat?!

seriously the mil is just a slice of society. you have rednecks, gangbangers, bookworms, fags, libs, etc. so naturally you'll have extremely bright people, as well as the marginally retarded. so his blanket statement is pretty stupid.

however, I just wish bush would stfu as well.

in retort to kerry's comment I saw him say "the people in the military are plenty smart!" GOD just shut up! he sounded like total hick.

What's worse is that his spokesperson said that he deviated from the script and was supposed to say:

QUOTE
"Do you know where you end up if you don't study, if you aren't smart, if you're intellectually lazy? You end up getting us stuck in a war in Iraq. Just ask President Bush."

Either way he's still an idiot, the second statement helps him none.

I enjoy this whole debacle because of how the Republican voice comes back with the "every soldier is a valiant hero" stance.

I will never understand the mentality that we should all stand up and salute members of the military, especially in a time like this.

by no means do I think we should boo them....but everytime I hear people discuss thanking the troops right now for "protecting our freedom" I'm wondering what the fuck they are talking about ?

I just think his comment was asinine no matter which way he meant it. It's not that we need to roll out the red carpet for soldiers but I think that we owe some respect to each other and that includes soldiers.

summary? so i don't have to look at his ugly/annoying face and listen to his ugly/annoying voice?

The relevant part:
QUOTE
During a speech in Pasadena where John Kerry was allegedly trying to support democrats, he told an audience of students, "Education if you make the most of it you study hard, you do your homework and you make an effort to be smart you can do well. And if you don't you get stuck in Iraq." OOoohhh. The GOP immediately chastised Kerry saying the comments were a slap in the face to the US troops in Iraq.

Kerry then apologized for what he said was a botch joke aimed at the president.

You botched a joke about Bush? How could you screw that up? There wasn't that much material to choose from?

That's like shooting at a wounded elephant, with a bullet the size of a wounded elephant, and missing.

Who is writing your material?

So guys I think I got one about Dick Cheney, ready? Dick Cheney walks into a bar, all women are stupid. What do you think?

You were talking about a education and Bush, it's a home run. I mean you were almost there.

If you study hard, do your homework and make an effort to be smart you can do well. If not well, you can become president.

People woulda laughed just because you didn't say something boring.

Kerry seen here telling a paraplegic joke, has since canceled campaign appearances with democratic congressional candidates.

Ya think!?

As a social experiment I would love for an election to have no political party names used. So a candidate doesn't announce which party he's with and there is no straight ticket voting. I would love to see who people voted for.

Me personally, I want a Democrat in office so that some of these extreme leftists can get a taste of their own medicine. I consider myself pretty much in the middle but these neo-cons and left-wingers just drive me nuts.

I don't know about the rest of ya, but I personally take more offense to the commander in chief of the armed forces abandoning a U.S. soldier behind enemy, Shi'ite lines than some feeble attempt at a bad joke poking fun at the mr. bush's intelligence.

Sigh.... yet another cornball study from the heritage foundation. Seriously, ignore think tank research. Whether liberal or conservative, they all have ideologies and will manufacture studies that reinforce those ideologies.

Case in point...

QUOTE
The Department of Defense (DOD) does not track family income data for recruits, and there are no individual income data for enlistees. Military service is the first full-time job for most of them. We approximate each recruit’s household income by using the median household income of his or her hometown ZIP code.

By assigning each recruit the median 1999 household income for his hometown ZIP code as determined from Census 2000, the mean income for 2004 recruits was $43,122 (in 1999 dollars). For 2005 recruits, it was $43,238 (in 1999 dollars). These are increases over the mean incomes for the 1999 cohort ($41,141) and 2003 cohort ($42,822). The national median published in Census 2000 was $41,994. This indicates that, on average, the 2004 and 2005 recruit populations come from even wealthier areas than their peers who enlisted in 1999 and 2003.

When comparing numbers (especially income), it's important to understand why economists and sociologists rarely use the mean. The problem with averages is that they're far too easily skewed by extremely large figures. Imagine you're comparing three people, a person who makes 10k a year, a person who makes 30k a year, and someone who makes 10 million a year. If we take the average, this means that the average person in that group makes about $3.3 million. If we take the median, that means the average person makes 30k a year. While that figure is still a ways off (mainly due to the fact that the sample size is so small), it's a lot more realistic than the mean.

Now, the study does use the median income of the zip code when determining the soldiers' income, but then it averages those incomes together, leading to the effect described above. Now comes something even trickier. Re-read this line:

That's right... they just compared a mean to a median, thus making the soldiers' income more than that other Americans'.
