Is it just me or do the boards go through extremely slow load periods and then fast, etc?

Look at site5's deal that they got going on right now... $5 a month if you buy two years.

I have problems with the site frequently. And I don't have problems accessing other sites, so I don't think it has anything to do with my internet connection.

Has anyone else noticed the old problems starting to creep up again? Today, I haven't had a page load in less than 5 secs. The majority of the loads are taking upwards of 15-20 seconds.

I'd bet anything the problem is the database. Does the interface you have to sql let you rebuild the indexes or anything? It shouldn't be any problem with too much data, as 65,000 posts shouldn't make sql even skip a beat. So if possible I'd say try and re-index it if you can. Could also be tons of other databases on the same box, and a few losers eating up the box (I'm assuming it's not one dedicated box). 9 times out of 10 a site slowdown for one that does as many inefficient queries as a board like this is a result of waiting on queries to return. (not dissing it by calling them inefficient, but just from the bottom of the screen it's telling me it just did 10 queries to load this one page. LEARN2JOIN). Just my $0.02 anyhow.

The spam daemon was spiking when a handful of large messages were being scanned. The host decreased the limit and tuned a few other limitation variables.

We'll see if we notice a difference.

Lance:
just curious, what's the bandwidth this site takes up per month? And how much space does the database take up? I would definitely not mind hosting a forum perhaps as a trial or something to see if the host I have would work. I have 50GB a month that's not really getting used at all.

The bandwidth is negligible, it's like less than 5 gigs a month. The database is probably around 140 mb though.

well i mean just the actual forum, so it doesn't have all the insanely slow periods every now and then. other stuff sounds cool though I'll add it to my list of projects (personal web site is gonna be first though). now that i'm on a mmo break i'll have more time for this kinda crap tongue.gif

i put up a test phpbb3 (RC1) if anyone cares to take a look. if nothing else, log on and tell me what you think and what kinda speed you're getting. i've never really put my host or sql db through any kind of load.

Either phpBB has really evolved since I used it last or you've uploaded some sort of skin. I like the new look.

The thing that always turned me off on phpBB was the crappy default skin. This new skin rocks though, it's about time phpBB came up with a decent default skin.

well the 9 sec is just the time it took at the server to run the queries (which is terrible). for ten queries that number should be sub second at least.

well they're part of it. that time at the bottom of the page is how long from the time the php.exe sent the request to the time it recieved the response. the rest of the lag on the site is the web server's CPU time getting eaten. it will rarely be bandwidth problems when it's a php or ASP.NET page (i.e. server side stuff) that's slow. usually these service providers will throw 50-100 different accounts on one small web server, and all it takes is one jackass who doesn't know what he's doing to eat the server alive.
