Just installed this tonight, pretty sweet... the flip3d task switching is freakin tight as hell. last time I installed it was beta 1, and this version seems way more polished.
also didn't realize they have their own new document format... "xps" (similiar to pdf). don't know much about it, but they have a 300 page document full of color photos & tables and the entire document is like 12 MB |

Way more polished, still uses too much memory. I was at near 100% with only a few applications open. Quite frankly, it looks like OS X with transparency.

Have you actually used OS X? Everything is pretty much the same. The animations, the way that information is presented, etc.
Oh, you have an analog clock in the top right. Why?! What's the point?! Also, I love that one screenshot is bigger than the other Oh, and the colors are opposite, covenient. White vs. Black. Go use OS X (a lot) and then use Vista, then get back to me. Looking at a screenshot does nothing. -------------------- "There is a level of cowardice lower than that of the conformist: that of the fashionable non-conformist." |

Now use both of them and you'll see that their interfaces are very similiar (minus the os x buttons being on the top left) The animations, the fades, etc. all are pretty much exact replicas. Again, for someone who hasn't used OS X, you seem to make a lot of assumptions with a simple screenshot. In that case, Linux and WinXP are exact opposites because the taskbar in Linux is thicker. -------------------- "There is a level of cowardice lower than that of the conformist: that of the fashionable non-conformist." |

The screenshot looks the same, but you're using that and that alone to make the assumption that just because that looks a little different (different colors, different bars) everything is different. They have the same fade and drop down to the taskbar, just like OS X. They could have left it completely out, could they not have? WinXP doesn't have animated minimize and maximize or close. Also, the "Show All current running programs" is an OS X clone to the T. The running processes thing, yeah, I have that in OS X. I can even see the contents of the packets if it's connected to the net. Flip3D eh? Yeah, been done. It was available in Linux oh, I dunno, 4 years ago. They have not done anything innovative with Vista, just "improved" existing technology. Hell, even MS has admitted to not being innovators. My main problem though, for the "cool" features the memory takes a hit. I would not be posting anything about the look if these neat things that are already present in OS X didn't eat up so much memory in Vista. If they fix that, then a lot of current WinXP users will upgrade. I wasn't trying to make this a "my OS is better" thread, I was just pointing out what was already known, Microsoft is not a company of innovation, just repackaging and slight improvement for their architecture. I mean, they tried to innovate with WinFS and that went down in flames when they realized a database driven file system was the dumbest thing ever. As an aside, I just feel like MS is building cool for the sake of building it, not functionality. WinXP is functional, it does its job and that's it. It seems like they are adding these new "features" into Vista just for the hell of it. I'm sorry but animations aren't going to help my grandparents write an e-mail. And don't give me the "Well Apple does it, blah blah blah", that's because Apple's target market is different. MS is targeting the everyday user and business. They don't care about these niche markets of developers and designers. -------------------- "There is a level of cowardice lower than that of the conformist: that of the fashionable non-conformist." |

QUOTE (Hartmann @ Oct 4 2006, 04:15 PM) They have the same fade and drop down to the taskbar, just like OS X. They could have left it completely out, could they not have? again, how is this an original idea? it's only logical that if you have a small item, and make it big, it will fade exactly like it does. it's not some revolutionary OS functionality geezus. I am going home from work but I'll reply when I get back. Basically, you're saying that the Microsoft features are cool and I'm saying they already exist, so yeah, they may be cool, but they're nothing new.
By looks in my original statement (way up top) my meaning was that the features (the fade, etc.) look exactly the same. I never meant the desktops just alike. And yes, I've used Vista since back when it was one of the 50-- Longhorn builds. And yes, there are innovative companies. More when I get home. Again, I am not trying to defend Apple. I have my own problems with their OS. My whole point was to point out that Vista is nothing special. -------------------- "There is a level of cowardice lower than that of the conformist: that of the fashionable non-conformist." |

QUOTE (Hartmann @ Oct 4 2006, 05:26 PM) And yes, I've used Vista since back when it was one of the 50-- Longhorn builds. sweet so now you're comparing beta OSs to complete off the shelf ones.. QUOTE (Rocky @ Oct 4 2006, 05:03 PM) The things that matter in Vista, have nothing to do with the eye candy. Exactly. Thank you. How would I do the minimize/maximize thing? I answered that a long time ago; I'd do it just like they're doing it in XP, leaving the animation out. You asked me if I have been using Vista for long, I answered you. What the hell is your problem? I've seen it go from horrible memory usage, to decent, back to horrible, to good, to where it is now, which is decent but still not stellar. I felt compelled to make the statement I did because it's exactly what you do whenever someone posts something for OS X or Linux or anything. You always come back with "eh, it sucks". Shade over a gig of swap isn't too shabby as far as i'm concerned. the OS in general runs smooth as silk (although i'll admit i have a pretty monster machine). ![]() here's the "software explorer" in windows defender... pretty nice organization ![]() i still have a ton of stuff to install but so far seems pretty sweet. it's still a RC and has beta ATI catalyst & beta creative audigy 2 drivers so i don't doubt there will be some hiccups. I also did a lot of tweaking on my XP box before (removing unused services, etc) so I'm sure some toying with it will be in order. |

Your sarcasm is lost on me. I wasn't trying to turn it into anything, was merely making a simple statement that you took as an attack. You rarely start the shit? I'm not even touching this one. Stop acting like you're an innocent bystander in this and take it for what it is, two people arguing over something stupid. You've come into threads that multiple people have started (myself included) and "started shit". And if I do read correctly I never actually started anything. I merely stated it looks a lot like OS X and that memory usage for me was pretty bad (I don't have a beast of a machine). I see Vista as a waste of MS resources. They could have spent the 3+ years that they sunk into it doing something with XP and building some really useful tools. VS.NET 2005 is a start and they need to stick to that path, giving people tools to make their product even better. What I hope is that they have some installation options for people who are not technically inclined (my grandparents) or their Emachines are gonna run like crap. -------------------- "There is a level of cowardice lower than that of the conformist: that of the fashionable non-conformist." |

I know the boards were cleared, but I've made over 1000 posts since then... so if I'm really that bad it should be easy to find one. Your post had a legitimate opinion, and I in turn asked you why it was you felt that way. I got no problem that you started hacking at Vista, just don't get all hussy when I fire back. I took what you said about the memory stuff as an interesting thing to check out, as I hadn't looked at it. Then you proceeded to start hacking apart the vista pic and telling me I didn't know what I was talking about bc I haven't used OSX. Spotlight, the iSight, etc. were innovative from Apple. I just find it funny that you bring up one thing to keep this argument going. Apple never claimed that Dashboard was something that wasn't already out there or so neat that you had to have it. They put it in the release and waited to see what the reaction was. I don't understand why you keep digging at this whole thing and then turn around accuse me of being a dick about the whole thing. QUOTE (impala454 @ Oct 4 2006, 09:26 PM) Let's see one. I know the boards were cleared, but I've made over 1000 posts since then... so if I'm really that bad it should be easy to find one. You started attacking me without cause once...about my degree. I wasnt even talking to you. Lately you havent bothered me and I have left you alone. I just think that Stephan is one of the most level-headed souls on these boards. I havent read all the nerd posts in this thread. Im just basing on posting histories that he is pretty much innocent of flaming....not saying that you flamed either though. |

well they've had the activation crap for a while now... doesn't it give you some certain amount of time to activate, then windows won't even boot? i'm not really sure how the activation stuff currently works when you don't have a legal copy. i've always had a volume license copy.

I saw it at NAB, I was not impreseed. Also the next gen of Office is almost an exact copy of the Mac version in terms of interface. Flip 3d is a poor copy of Expose, and that dashboard knock off is a good laugh. Microsoft should invest more resources in Xbox and MS Office. Then again this propbably what you would expect me to say.
Oh and I kid you not, as my friend I went with agreed, there was a foul smell in the air around the Microsoft booth. One more thing, I am surprised that microsoft has decided to create an OS that requires the newer hardware on the market, what happened to legecy compatiblity? Also the next gen of Office is almost an exact copy of the Mac version in terms of interface. Why would you expect Microsoft Office for Mac to look any different than Microsoft Office for the PC? I have the 2007 beta running on Vista RC1 x64 and it's pretty neat imho. The new layout makes a lot of sense. Flip 3d is a poor copy of Expose, Why is everything a copy with you guys? It's a little task switcher that shows the windows in 3d... how is that a copy of anything? Maybe it's a "poor copy" because it's not a copy. The whole aero interface was designed with the idea that they wanted to use more of the big gfx power that people's computers have now. Showing windows & animations in different ways only makes sense. and that dashboard knock off is a good laugh. What about it was a good laugh? |

Ok... First of all, I am not as much of a Mac Nut as I used to be, I have a new thing I am crazy about, and I know at least one person on this board who knows what that is. Since he is the only one on these boards that I am aware is familier with this topic, I see no point discussing it with the rest of you right now.
Second, John, windows being far more customizeable is a laugh. Maybe in terms of the GUI it is, but for system operation it is not. It is called Terminal, learn it, love it. impala454, do you even know what Expose is? Even the equivalent in Linux is far better than flip 3d, which breaks usibility by not allowing you to see all the windows at once in various layouts. Also the Vista knock-off of dashboard is a laugh cause it wastes desktop space an memory. You don't need widgets always in your face, just when you need the information. Oh, one more thing, I look forward to seeing the new BSOD in Vista. The Mac equivilant of BSOD is so rare, it is actually worth taking a picture of. lamont's lament, did you even go to NAB? But, yeah it would be nice if there were more games for Mac. Those that do exist actually run quite well though. When I was at the UP, we would often have LAN parties, and the machine that hosted was a G5 Power Mac. -------------------- All the bells and whistles, photo copy parts, and crap can not cover up weaknesses.

Well if you go back and look what I said, you'll notice I didn't claim flip 3d is any better, I asked why you think it's a "copy". Obviously you feel that flip 3d is completely different than the Mac one, which is fine, I'm sure it is, which is why it's not a copy. And maybe you'd like to explain this miraculous Dashboard that doesn't use memory. That would be a neat trick by any OS. It's hilarious to me how defensive you OSX freaks are getting when people start talking about Vista. |

It's hilarious to me how defensive you OSX freaks are getting when people start talking about Vista. I don't have anything else to say in this thread except this... It amazes me how much you bash other operating systems, yet from what I've read, Windows is the only thing you really ever use. Granted, I'm guessing you've touched Linux a few times for CS stuff and maybe you've looked at OS X a little, but it really doesn't sound like you have actually taken the time or money to purchase one of the machines to do a little research of your own. To me it's all about preference and getting the job done. If a Windows box will get a particular job done better than a Linux box, then that's what I am going to use (talking about development here). And the vice versa is also true. -------------------- "There is a level of cowardice lower than that of the conformist: that of the fashionable non-conformist." |

John, windows being far more customizeable is a laugh. Maybe in terms of the GUI it is, but for system operation it is not. It is called Terminal, learn it, love it. Yes, I mean the GUI. Most people use the GUI. I'm cs, I know the terminal. It's called putty to my unix box. |

Ok... First of all, I am not as much of a Mac Nut as I used to be, I have a new thing I am crazy about, and I know at least one person on this board who knows what that is. Since he is the only one on these boards that I am aware is familier with this topic, I see no point discussing it with the rest of you right now. You mean Ghibli films? -------------------- |

The main reason I don't use it as a primary desktop is it's just too damn much to go through to get the thing set up, hardware drivers are occasionally hard to come by (although I'm sure it's gotten better), and I can't play my games on it. i've reinstalled my system a couple times from vista beta 2 to vista rc1 x86 to vista rc1 x64, and once the download is done then to vista rc2 x64, and wow the installation is quick. from boot off the dvd to ready to use in about 30 minutes, with almost no user input. as far as OSX goes, I honestly would love to get a copy of it and check it out some day. I even went to their site the other day to see how I could get it and try it, but all I find is this page: http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebO...nplm=MA453Z%2FA which tells me I have to have a PowerPC G5, G4, or G3 processor. I'm not about to go out and buy a Mac computer just to try out their OS. If there is some way to try it out on my PC I'd love to try it (I thought they supported PCs now?). |

There's ways to get OS X to run on a windows comp, but they're not very reliable from what I hear. That and Apple doesn't support them.

Probably not. If not for OS X, Apple would be just another computer manufacturer.

Now you're just pointing fingers. I'll be the first to admit that I have attacked Windows, but I've also had my Mac qualms. However, you still seem to almost troll OS X threads just to say "how's that any different than blah, blah, blah" just to start something. I try not to come into Windows threads to bash stuff, especially if it's an interesting thread. However, when people state "oh this is the coolest thing ever and is going to be awesome" for anything, when it's obviously not, then I'll say something. I am sorry to single you out in this whole thing but it always seems that we get to this point in the conversation and you bring out the "but it's you guys". Let's just drop it and say that from now on when anyone has a valid question or point they should post it, but if it's just a "well that sucks" type of post then it doesn't need to be there. Zetec, that cool with you? I'd like to see something like that implemented. -------------------- "There is a level of cowardice lower than that of the conformist: that of the fashionable non-conformist." |

I'm pointing it out that several of you guys do this because it seems like it happens in every damn thread that starts discussing a microsoft product. I've got no problem with people objecting, but it'd at least be nice to have an intelligent discussion as to the actual facts & differences. As far as you guys LAMP/Mac stuff or whatever, I haven't been derogatory about any of that for a long time, although I guess it takes a while to shed a reputation. and hehe dude... the QUOTE when people state "oh this is the coolest thing ever and is going to be awesome" for anything, when it's obviously not, then I'll say something. got a pretty good laugh out of me... not bein mean, it's just that i guess "cool" is complete opinion... that is, unless you're the master of what is cool and what's obviously not i don't even mind if people get all pissed and go "OMGZ THAT POS SUCKS ASS" as long as they provide some explanation why they feel that way |

its obvious that Stephan can in fact (and has) have an itelligent conversation discussing OS's. I know first hand that several go in and talk shit about Mac including myself AND Impala. Microsoft does not gain amnesty just because Impala wants to talk "intelligently" on the matter. Its apparent that Stephan has told you in multiple threads to quit trolling him and to back off. He can't even give an honest opinion without you insulting him. Get a life and realize that there are different OS's for the simple fact that they meet people's different needs and desires. If one was superior in all aspects then there would only be one. I think there should be rules to just stick to the facts here because Impala obviously cannot play nice like a big boy. ...and this is coming from a Microsoft fangirl

So? I would prob get OS X for my old PC if I could. I'm not paying all that money for an apple computer. That may be so, but I can guarantee you the sale of Apple's computers would drop if you could load OS X on any computer. -------------------- Holy shit, pebkac, you're awesome!
