So what would they say about their "extremists" embarking on the killing of innocents who do not believe in Allah or Muhammed? I'd call it a crusade. Turn Iran to glass and move on. Tehran is a smog ridden hell hole anyway. -------------------- "There is a level of cowardice lower than that of the conformist: that of the fashionable non-conformist." |

What's sad is when you read what the Pope said, it in no way attacks all Muslims, just the ones who kill to "save Islam"
QUOTE I was reminded of all this recently, when I read... of part of the dialogue carried on - perhaps in 1391 in the winter barracks near Ankara - by the erudite Byzantine Emperor Manuel II Paleologus and an educated Persian on the subject of Christianity and Islam, and the truth of both. In the seventh conversation...the emperor touches on the theme of the holy war. Without descending to details, such as the difference in treatment accorded to those who have the "Book" and the "infidels", he addresses his interlocutor with a startling brusqueness on the central question about the relationship between religion and violence in general, saying: "Show me just what Muhammad brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached." The emperor, after having expressed himself so forcefully, goes on to explain in detail the reasons why spreading the faith through violence is something unreasonable. Violence is incompatible with the nature of God and the nature of the soul. "God," he says, "is not pleased by blood - and not acting reasonably is contrary to God's nature. Faith is born of the soul, not the body. Whoever would lead someone to faith needs the ability to speak well and to reason properly, without violence and threats." The decisive statement in this argument against violent conversion is this: not to act in accordance with reason is contrary to God's nature. The editor, Theodore Khoury, observes: For the emperor, as a Byzantine shaped by Greek philosophy, this statement is self-evident. But for Muslim teaching, God is absolutely transcendent. His will is not bound up with any of our categories, even that of rationality. At this point, as far as understanding of God and thus the concrete practice of religion is concerned, we are faced with an unavoidable dilemma. Is the conviction that acting unreasonably contradicts God's nature merely a Greek idea, or is it always and intrinsically true? Yeah, he says that Islam is essentially wrong but don't the Muslims do the same thing towards Judaism and Christianity (except they tell us they are going to lop our heads off), but you don't see us going around screaming "NOT FAIR!" or threatening to kill to end Christianity. -------------------- "There is a level of cowardice lower than that of the conformist: that of the fashionable non-conformist." |

Call a true Christian a Catholic, and they'll look at you like you're a fucktard. And vice-versa. Trust me I know plenty of both, I'm not just defending one or the other.
They're seperate religions built on the same foundation, but they have very different ideas about salvation. Since salvation is pretty much a fundamental idea in Islam, Christianity, Catholicism, etc etc, saying they're the same if they have different ideas about salvation is, well, retarded. Try reading up on "sola scriptura" and the "five solas". Christianity --------> Jesus Catholicism ----------> a bunch of bullshit rituals/obstacles aka The Roman Church ------> Jesus Judiasm and Islam both come from the same foundation..... would you say Jews and Muslims are the same? No, I wouldn't either. That would be fucktardedness. They both believe in God, but have very different views about how you reach God. Thus they are blatantly different religions, nobody would argue that. So if catholics and christians differ over how you go about reaching God, saying they're the same is laughable. Catholics aren't christian, and christians aren't catholic. It's that simple. There's no misconception. baptist, protestant, methodist, blah blah etc etc = denominations of Christianity. Catholicism = a seperate church. They'll admit this readily. They're not a denomination of Christianity. (the more you know)

...wow.
By that argument, a lot of Christians aren't actually Christian. Christianity is defined by one thing: The saviour of the world is Jesus Christ. In order to be saved by said person, one must confess and accept him as such. Praying = ritual Easter celebration = ritual (both my baptist and "non-denominational" church had some pretty wacky celebrations). Just because Catholicism has you doing things differently than some other denominations doesn't take away from it actually being Christian. I mean, if you wanted to say it that way, we might as well say that Calvinistic Denomination's aren't Christian at all because of Predestination and TULIP. Or that Southern Baptist's aren't either because they don't allow dancing. -------------------- ![]() |

The main thing that separates Christians and Catholics is the fact that Catholics do not believe in salvation (some do, but the Church as a whole does not). Instead, they believe in good works and Hail Mary's will get them out of purgatory (another thing that Christians don't subscribe to).
Paul never intended these things of the Christian Church and as the Church evolved it split into separate entities with the Catholic side being much more political (Constantine anyone?). -------------------- "There is a level of cowardice lower than that of the conformist: that of the fashionable non-conformist." |

Everyone sins. The idea of purgatory is not believed in by protestants (or Baptists, etc.) because they believe in salvation by grace. We believe that no matter how many good works you do or how much you pray it will not get you into Heaven. We simply believe that if you believe Christ died for your sins then you are saved and granted the gift of eternal life. Basically, no one can clear you of your sins besides Jesus. Also, some Catholics believe that your good will be weighed against your bad before you are let into Heaven, most Christians do not believe this (though some do). Anyway it's not pertinent to the original topic of the thread... The Roman Catholic Church is a different denomination that the others you mentioned, but they are most definitely Christian. As a former Catholic (and a pretty snotty, devout one at that), I'm pretty damn sure I know what I'm talking about. Hartmann -- Catholics believe in salvation by good works AND faith (not works alone), whereas Protestants believe in salvation by faith alone. Protestants also believe in Sola Scriptura, whereas Catholics and Orthodox believe in scripture + tradition. -------------------- |

I always a little confused about their view on salvation. I have a few Catholic friends and they are never able to give me a straight answer. The fact that they still have Jesus on the cross befuddles me as well. -------------------- "There is a level of cowardice lower than that of the conformist: that of the fashionable non-conformist." |

The fact that they still have Jesus on the cross befuddles me as well. Well it's not something that many Catholics are aware of. I don't think I learned about it until I was dating Ryan and wanted to learn how Lutherans are different from Catholics. Functionally, for salvation, Catholics: 1) Get baptized 2) Go to confession regularly once they're age 7 or so Catholics divide sin into two different types: venial (minor) and mortal (serious). Unconfessed mortal sins doom a person to hell. At confession, you are given a penance by the priest, which absolves the person of guilt. However, there still remains some temporal punishment for the sins which manifests as hardships on earth or time in Purgatory. The same goes for unconfessed venial sins. This punishment can be remitted, in whole or in part, by the performance of indulgences, which include good works, praying the rosary, reading scripture, etc. etc. Granting of indulgences in return for monetary contributions was what prompted Martin Luther to write his 95 theses, but I don't believe that the sale of indulgences is practiced anymore. She can correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the differences (other than the whole Papal thing) it's basically, Lutheran's believe in faith alone whereas Catholics believe in Faith and Goodwork.
Her thoughts on this is it really doesn't matter. If you have faith, then you will be driven to do goodworks anyway. -------------------- ![]() |

QUOTE (Overlord @ Sep 19 2006, 01:45 PM) what's the difference? Salvation by faith alone (Lutheran) vs. faith + works (Catholics). Lutherans also follow Sola Scriptura (scripture alone), but I don't think they rail against tradition as much as other Protestant denominations do. -------------------- |

Yep, Jim had my opinion right. I think the faith alone vs. faith & works argument is moot.
