We usually meet every Friday at 2:00 pm in the Rec's big mat room (first floor). If it's already taken, then we'll meet in the top floor corner mat area.
No-gi grappling, although we'll start incorporating strikes soon. Turnout is usually rather light, unfortunately (2-4 people). But it's still fun and a great workout. ::EDIT:: MIXED MARTIAL ARTS This post has been edited by Psykopath: Mar 2 2008, 05:01 PM -------------------- |

I need to go and learn some grappling.
My grappling skills are limited to the armbar and a couple chokes (and I have to get lucky to pull any of those off) It's the one section in Tao of Jeet Kune Do I never really did much on. |

I love ankle locks, toe holds, and leg/knee bars. Not too heavily emphasized in America, as far as grappling goes (mostly in in Japanese jiu jitsu).

I need to work on my takedown defense
Besides just trying to be agile, the only thing I've ever really used was a knee to the face. |

no experience is really necessary. you have some, so that is good though. We usually watch some of the bas rutten instructional series and practice those holds for a bit, then we grapple for a while.
Heh, we had a couple of police recruits show up a few weeks ago. They saw us rolling and thought it was cool so they asked to spar. They essentially kept trying to punch us, use small joint manipulation, pressure points, etc. We told them that it's just grappling, but they kept going hardcore. So we preceeded to tap them with armbars and guillotine chokes and the like. Fun times... BTW: Obviously, we are amatuers here. Anyone's welcome to come out and learn a few moves, get a good workout, and just have some fun. I'm going to submit Cathryn a minimum of 50 painful times on Friday at her house, if she'll let me! I know it has something to do with martial arts, and in all probability part of MA stands for Martial Arts, but where in the thread does it say what MMA stands for? What is the extra M for? I've read through it and I fail to see where this term is defined. Psykopath started the thread out listing meetings times and what not, but why does he assume everyone in the world knows what an MMA club is? |

QUOTE (M1N10N @ Mar 2 2006, 10:14 AM) how long do you go for? [edit] do you also have waivers for injuries? We usually roll for 1-2 hours, depending on how many people show up, obviously the more the better. Each rolling session with a partner generally goes until one is able to submit the other, no real time limit No injury waivers. Like I said, we aren't an 'official' sports club yet. We'll have to go through bureaucratic hell to make it so. If you have a mouthguard and cup, that'll help. Trust me, we aren't trying to kill people here. We generally know each others limits/strengths and such. We'll make sure no injuries occur. I'll admit though, don't be phased by a bloody nose or a busted lip or "mat burn." That stuff happens often, not all the time, but often. -------------------- |

Eric TEH SEXY showed up. :-P
Myself and another guy, John Billington, rolled for a bit. Sucks that we couldn't go longer, but he's been having heart problems (palpatations) lately. And another guy who showed up regularly recently lost his mom. :'( But, I'll get my brother to show next week, Eric says he'll be there, John B. will show, and so others need to come on over to the rec !!! -------------------- |

Thanks Eric and your brother Scott for coming yesterday. My brother and perhaps a couple others may show next time. Try to invite others as well! The more the merrier.
I'll also be sure to bring my laptop so we can watch some of the Bas Rutten mma instructionals. And perhaps we can incorporate some light striking if you want? Also, show me how to properly kick. =) -------------------- |

Work grappling techniques from video, determine what will be acceptable striking limits (force, location, and the like), full-contact-sparring for those that wish to do so or no-gi rolling for those that don't want to strike. Nice turnout today.
Me, Eric, Scott, John, Blake, Seth (only me and Eric are forum members, fyi). Watched some Bas Rutten takedowns and then rolled the rest of the time. Holding off on the striking until we all have protective equipment. Damn big muscley menz making me tap to their SPINE cranks...owie. ::EDIT:: Sternum and spine are in some insane pain. (*yet again*) Those of us that have had formal training are not looking to beat people up. We're looking to get others to train/learn with us. We watch training tapes and work the submissions/takedowns, etc. for about 30 minutes-1 hour and then we have freestyle grappling for about another hour. Show up tomorrow, it's a great workout and nobody is out to hurt anyone else. We all just want to improve our fighting abilities. Eric (Moebary) and his brother Scott started showing up a few weeks ago. Neither had any grappling ability beforehand, but they are learning fast and are enjoying their time on the mat! -------------------- |

Also: During the summer, I plan on working out hardcore (I'll finally have time to do so!).
So if anyone wants to get a workout group together, maybe we can sign up to use the Rec in the summer (I'll already be good to go for Summer 2)?...We could use the mats for extra rolling time that way. -------------------- |

QUOTE (Spectatrix @ Jun 17 2006, 04:32 PM) Ya know, Zach, even if you aren't registered for Summer 1, you should still be able to use the rec if you're registered for Summer 2 and/or Fall. really? They've turned me away before (but that was a couple years ago). I'll try sometime in the next week. -------------------- |

QUOTE (moebary @ Aug 24 2006, 07:07 PM) MWF I'm not done until 4 TR I'm done at 2 anything after these times will probably work for me what works for you? Well weekends are best for me. Saturday: anytime Sunday: after 4pm Weekdays I usually train 2-3 hours everyday. (T/TR- 7pm- around 9ish, MWF- 6-8 or 9ish) Plus weekdays I am usually on campus until 5 everyday except Wednesday. Could you handle a weekend time? This post has been edited by Psykopath: Aug 24 2006, 09:36 PM -------------------- |

Looking like we'll meet up there again next Friday evening/night in the Rec big mat room if anyone else wants to join and learn a thing or two. This post has been edited by Psykopath: Sep 9 2006, 05:28 PM -------------------- |

So....NOT fighting on March 24th.
1.) The fights are only kickboxing...I'd prefer to fight MMA, but I wouldn't mind a stand-up match. 2.) (the real reason I'm not fighting) The event is UNSANCTIONED. That's basically the equivalent of pulling people off of the street to fight and charging admission. No doctor/medical staff at ringside and nothing (win/lose/draw) goes on any record. FUCK THAT You can also be barred from fighting by state athletic commissions if they find out you fight in an unsanctioned event. I will be participating in a submission wrestling/jiu jitsu tournament Feb. 24th in Dallas though. Should be fun. And there are several SANCTIONED events coming up in the near future here in Texas...looking at fighting in one in April. -------------------- |

Tournament idea is scrapped...can't afford the $50 for the tourney, gas to and from Dallas, and hotel at the moment.
Anyways, I'm going to start helping Brandon, Glen, and others get into shape with MMA stuff if anyone else would care to join. -------------------- |

Turns out the Hobbs/Mar. 24th fight may still be on for me. My coach contacted the promoter and had him clarify the specs of the event. Turns out it is sanctioned by New Mexico and MMA fights are on the card. Hell Yes. -------------------- |

Well, I'm now 0-1 as in I lost.
I weighed in at 170lbs, 5'11". My opponent was probably 6'1" or 6' and weighed in at 185lbs. It was one hell of a fight though...fight of the night by far. We went the full 3 rounds at 3 minutes each and it was a draw, so they gave us a 2 minute OT round which we also fought through to the end. Funny thing, the fight only went to the ground once (I reversed a hip toss into the mount...or no, he through a high kick and fell, that's what it was...but the ref stood us up after like 10 seconds, even though I was landing some punches). The rest of the time it was a non-stop kickboxing match =P . My opponent won round 1, I won round 2, round 3 was...I guess the draw round although even strangers in the crowd thought I won it. All and all my opponent grabbed the W with a flurry in the 10 sec of OT that probably swayed the judges in his favor. So a loss by a very very split decision. Heh, I even landed a couple of hard headkick roundhouses. Gotta work on my straight punches. I threw too many looping bombs...got overexcited I guess, this being my first fight. I should have the video posted by next week. My face looks like hamburger, nose is broken (again), and I'm sore as hell. My opponent won't walk straight for a while, I left a nice black welt on his left leg from all the leg kicks, and his face had some contusions. Again, one hell of a fight that got a standing ovation. point on the doll where the man touched you... lmao yeah, 'twas a fun night, minus the face rape. Glad we didn't go to the post-fight after party at the "Post-Party Saloon" (I think that's what it is called). It's run by the Bandidos, and always has trouble. Last night we drove by it after the fights...police tape, many cop cars and ambulances. Fun -------------------- |

I honestly don't know. He told me after the fight that that was his second fight (2-0 record). He was telling people before the fight that that was his 6th fight. If I'm looking at this video right, you're gonna either jam or break your toes sooner or later with some of those kicks. It looks like you're not getting your foot completely straight on the rounds.
