I'm not for the KKK in any way shape or form, but did anyone else see the news story on this last night? Basically about 10-15 KKK members just kinda chillin with a few signs behind a fenced off area, and all these crazy ass hippie liberals came up startin shit and got all crazy and the riot police had to arrest a bunch of em. Of course the hippies blame the police and blah blah blah. Anyhow it was just kinda ironic to me that the extreme liberals (who are always holding "peaceful" rallies & protests because free speech is so important to them) couldn't let someone else with different views & interests have their own rally. Besides... one of the best ways to spoil someone else's rally/protest is to ignore it.

It was a peaceful protest but they began blaring nazi propaganda over the loudspeaker. Then some hippie liberals started throwing shit over the fence at them and the riot police were called in. There was even a black lady that was yelling and screaming at the liberal protestors because of their douchebaggish behavior.

Well in this case they were protesting illegal immigration and I commend them for it. Yeah, their normal KKK activities may be retarded, but as long as they're peacefully protesting stuff, I think it's ridiculous to threaten to beat them up.

ie

1. Hippie holds rally with highly controversial subject, gets hundreds of other hippies to show up.

Umm, yes? If it's a peaceful protest, whoever can protest whatever they want for all I care. And by peaceful I mean both not being violent themselves and not provoking others (like shouting racial epithets, for instance).

I don't agree with the KKK's agenda, but I also don't think that all of their members are necessarily mobbing, lynching murderers. Many of them may be violent towards minorities, but thinking that they all are is just as fallacious as assuming that all fundie Christians bomb abortion clinics.

As far as I can tell, that act gave blacks legal recourse against all-white courts that were reluctant to prosecute KKK members for lynchings. That doesn't mean it was put down on a list somewhere as a registered terrorist organization. In fact, it doesn't look like the Klan is mentioned in the text of the act itself, only the title: http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Ku_Klux_Klan_Act_of_1871. In fact, Wikipedia says:

In 1882, long after the end of the first Klan, the Supreme Court ruled in United States vs. Harris that the Klan Act was partially unconstitutional, saying that Congress's power under the fourteenth amendment did not extend to private conspiracies.

Besides, the modern Klan is a different organization than that targeted by the 1871 act.

the first amendment wasn't written to protect nonoffensive speech, it is mean to protect what some people feel is offensive (see: hateful) speech, no matter how distasteful hippies or minorities think it is.
