I thought this might be interesting having one of these around.

Just post anything on the news (TV, internet) that's going on right now. Serious, crazy, silly, or dumb!

To start off... it's officially been 6/6/6 for 3 hours (Korean Time) and nothing fishy yet!

edit: I don't care if you think this is a stupid idea or not. If it is, then just let the thread die and we'll go on with our lives.

edit2: oh, and no spam in here like off-topic. i don't want this thread becoming trash. at least post something current-event related or related to someone else's topic.

Man flips off train. Train strikes back.

QUOTE
KENOSHA, Wis. (AP) -- An 18-year-old man was struck and killed by a train as he reportedly stood on the tracks and made an obscene gesture at the train, the Kenosha Sheriff's Department said Saturday.

Andrew J. Grosenick and Keith A. Lien, 18, both of Silver Lake, were using the tracks as a short cut home around 11:30 p.m. Friday, Lien told deputies.

Authorities say they believe both men were intoxicated at the time.

A train approached and both men got off the tracks, but Grosenick walked back onto the track, Lien told investigators.

The Wisconsin Central Railroad conductor told authorities he also saw Grosenick return to the track, raise his arm and "flip off" the train.

The train struck Grosenick, who was declared dead at the scene.

Lien was not injured but was taken to a hospital for what the sheriff's department said was an "extreme state of intoxication."

The accident remained under investigation.

Restaraunt employee attacked by naked angry customer

QUOTE
Police were called to a business in the 6500 block of Forest Hill Boulevard about a naked, drunken man trying to enter a business and attack an employee. An employee said that the man and a woman were in the backseat of a black Oldsmobile that was driven by another man and they ordered food. The employee said the man and woman were having sex. The employee told the driver to pull to the front of the business because of a mistake in the order. The employee stepped out of the business and handed a bag to the woman. The woman then said that he touched her breast. The naked man exited the car and attacked the employee. The employee tried to run into the business, but the man followed him and punched him in the eye. The man was lying on the ground with his body half inside and half outside, causing the door of the business to be open. The man stood up, went into the business and stumbled several times as he walked toward the bathroom. The officer made contact with the man who smelled like alcohol and had slurred speech. The man was arrested.

Wow. Just wow.

QUOTE
YONKERS — A Yonkers man was in extremely critical condition after jumping nude four stories from an apartment building landing yesterday, police said.

Police said they were called to 85 Riverdale Ave. about 2:50 a.m. yesterday on a report of a disorderly man banging on doors in the halls.

Lt. Timothy Hodges, a Police Department spokesman, said that when Police Officers David Barca and Steve Jesus arrived, a building security officer told them Franswa "Francios" Simmons, 36, of 6 Schroeder St., was running around naked in the sixth-floor hall.

When the police officers got off the elevator with the security officer, they saw Simmons screaming. His clothing had been thrown throughout the hall.

Simmons went into another elevator and started throwing out debris that he had taken from an apartment he had broken into, Hodges said.

When Barca and Jesus tried to talk to Simmons, the naked man got into a "fighting stance," Hodges said.

The officers sprayed him with department-issued pepper spray, but he licked it off of his face and told the officers that it tasted like water.

He then ran into another section of the building and jumped through a closed window and fell 12 feet onto a landing at 87 Riverdale Ave.

As the officers tried to talk to him, Simmons sat on the ledge for a short time, then jumped. He landed on the sidewalk four stories down.

He severely injured both legs, police said. Police and Empress Ambulance treated him, and he was taken to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla. He remained unconscious and in a coma as of late yesterday, police said.

Hodges said there was no indication why Simmons jumped out the window and off the roof.

Simmons is being charged with burglary, a felony, and criminal mischief, a misdemeanor.

Both police officers were treated at a hospital for exposure to pepper spray and later released.

So apparently I'm going to be interviewed by Glamour magazine for an article they are going to write on 20-something women getting involved politically. Well, me and two other young women that are involved in Presidential campaigns. I didn't realize Glamour dipped into politics.

I'm putting this in here because it loosely involves presidential politics:

While at work my dad had an elderly lady customer approach him about something. They got to friendly chit-chatting and she mentioned how her husband used to "mix these chemicals by hand when he was a farmer. Now he's got lukemia...just didn't know about that stuff back then."
My dad makes an off the collar remark in response: "Yeah, it's kind of like the stuff with lead and the tainted pet food that came in from China...stuff we just didn't know about."

her next comment...
"Yeah, and boy I'll tell ya'. If that nigger gets in office he'll let all those AIDS niggers in this country and then AIDS will be everywhere! And just as bad if she gets in there...we'll all go to hell if she gets elected."

My father then said "Ok..." rolled his eyes, and walked away.

------

oh and something to add... I love how some on here say people aren't voting for obama bc he's black, or for hillary because she's female.

i have been getting home early lately and actually have caught the news the past week or so... EVERY (not just most, or some, but EVERY single black person they interviewed said they'd vote for obama because: "well I think it's time to get a black president". EVERY (not just most, or some, but EVERY single woman they interviewed said they'd vote for hillary because: "well I think it's time we have a female president". there was one that did waiver. a black female. and guess what she said? "well I'd like to get a black person into the presidency, but I'd also like to see a woman in there too." Apparently if Oprah ran for president she'd win by a landslide.

No I'm not saying all blacks will vote for obama, or that all women will vote for hillary. I'm just saying, for all those that keep insisting this isn't going on, it seems to be going on a lot. Maybe they only showed those particular interviews. who knows.

...I've also seen the same about wanting to vote for McCain because he's A.) White and B.) male.
Well, seen the same in real life, not on TV. Wouldn't make for good press reviews to have a panelist discussing the color of a Presidential choice...
...oh wait...LOL.

Fucking media. laugh.gif

It's all a big popularity contest. Motherfucking trio of ass-hat Senators needs to stop debating lapel pins, how much they can tan, etc... and talk about legitimate issues.

QUOTE (Psykopath @ May 7 2008, 03:21 PM) *

Yep, mainly overheard it said by people while walking around in Market-Street. Lots were old people, though a couple were pop-collar frat types.

I argued in support of Obama today with my coworkers. They said he has a secret adgenda, but I think he just wants to get elected and has no real plan.

FEMALE INTERVIEWER:
So, General Cosgrove, what things are you going to teach these young boys when they visit your base?

GENERAL COSGROVE:
We're going to teach them climbing, canoeing, archery and shooting.
FEMALE INTERVIEWER:
Shooting! That's a bit irresponsible, isn't it?

GENERAL COSGROVE:
I don't see why, they'll be properly supervised on the rifle range.
FEMALE INTERVIEWER:
Don't you admit that this is a terribly dangerous activity to be teaching children?

GENERAL COSGROVE:
I don't see how. We will be teaching them proper rifle discipline before they even touch a firearm.
FEMALE INTERVIEWER:
But you're equipping them to become violent killers.

GENERAL COSGROVE:
Well, Ma'am, you're equipped to be a prostitute, but you're not one, are you?

The radio went silent and the interview ended.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080529/ap_en_...onuts_ad_pulled

QUOTE
BOSTON - Dunkin' Donuts has pulled an online advertisement featuring Rachael Ray after complaints that a fringed black-and-white scarf that the celebrity chef wore in the ad offers symbolic support for Muslim extremism and terrorism.

The coffee and baked goods chain said the ad that began appearing online May 7 was pulled over the past weekend because "the possibility of misperception detracted from its original intention to promote our iced coffee."

In the spot, Ray holds an iced coffee while standing in front of trees with pink blossoms.

Critics, including conservative commentator Michelle Malkin, complained that the scarf wrapped around her looked like a kaffiyeh, the traditional Arab headdress. Critics who fueled online complaints about the ad in blogs say such scarves have come to symbolize Muslim extremism and terrorism.

The kaffiyeh, Malkin wrote in a column posted online last Friday, "has come to symbolize murderous Palestinian jihad. Popularized by Yasser Arafat and a regular adornment of Muslim terrorists appearing in beheading and hostage-taking videos, the apparel has been mainstreamed by both ignorant (and not-so-ignorant) fashion designers, celebrities, and left-wing icons."

A statement issued Wednesday by Canton, Mass.-based Dunkin' Brands Inc., however, said the scarf had a paisley design, and was selected by a stylist for the advertising shoot.

"Absolutely no symbolism was intended," the company said.

Dunkin' spokeswoman Michelle King said the ad appeared on the chain's Web site, as well as other commercial sites.

Amahl Bishara, an anthropology lecturer at the University of Chicago who specializes in media matters relating to the Middle East, said complaints about the scarf's use in the ad demonstrate misunderstandings of Arab culture and the multiple meanings that symbols can take on depending on someone's perspective.

"I think that a right-wing blogger making an association between a kaffiyeh and terrorism is just an example of how so much of the complexity of Arab culture has been reduced to a very narrow vision of the Arab world on the part of some people in the U.S.," Bishara said in a phone interview. "Kaffiyehs are worn every day on the street by Palestinians and other people in the Middle East — by people going to work, going to school, taking care of their families, and just trying to keep warm."

While some extremists and terrorists may wear kaffiyehs, "To reduce their meaning to support for terrorism has a tacit racist tone to it," Bishara said.

Malkin, in a posting following up on last week's column, said of Dunkin's decision to pull the ad, "It's refreshing to see an American company show sensitivity to the concerns of Americans opposed to Islamic jihad and its apologists."

Ray, host of the Food Network television program "30 Minute Meals" as well as a syndicated daytime talk show, began appearing in ads for Dunkin' Donuts in March 2007. When Dunkin' announced the partnership, it said Ray would be featured in TV, print, radio and online spots in a campaign running through 2010.

Sad. Man is beating baby on the side of the road. Passerbys try to intervene and also called police. Police show up, man still will not stop kicking and punching and stomping on baby. They shoot and kill the man. Baby dies at the hospital. This is a pathetic world we live in when a person won't stop beating a baby in front of people.

Crazy White House...saying global warming is responsible for the Midwest flooding.

I don't see that released by the white house anywhere. If you look at the text that Brokaw quotes in that video, and actually research the source, it shows it's from a 162 page study by the NOAA. Where they got "White House" out of that I have no clue.

QUOTE
The 162-page study, which was led by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, provides the most comprehensive assessment yet of how global warming has helped to transform the climate of the United States and Canada over the past 50 years -- and how it may do so in the future.

Coming at a time when record flooding is ravaging the Midwest, the new report paints a grim scenario in which severe weather will exact a heavy toll. The report warned that extreme weather events "are among the most serious challenges to society in coping with a changing climate."

NEW YORK - Wall Street has — at least for the moment — shrugged off some of its many concerns and bounded higher thanks to a drop in oil prices.

The Dow Jones industrial average has shot up 276 points to the 11,239 level, its biggest jump in more than three months.

Investors were relieved when crude fell $4.14 to settle at $134.60 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. That brought oil's two-day plunge to more than $10.

Wells Fargo & Co.'s decision to boost its dividend is also alleviating some of the market's concerns about the health of banks.

Please keep sliding, oil prices! KEEP SLIDING DOWN TO THE PITS OF HELL!

Not to be a skeptic but i'll be happy about it end of day tomorrow if it's still at that price. So far the last few weeks, every time oil drops significantly, it shoots back up the next day because of some oil worker in timbuktu sneezed.

But the market is so volatile right now, it probably will shoot up again.
It would be nice to see it close the week with a continued string of losses though. =)

Supposed Murder Ruled Suicide--Real Life CSI Case
Reported by: Amy Montalvo

Authorities say a man believed to have been kidnapped and murdered while on his way to Lubbock actually committed suicide. Thomas Hickman--regional manager for Red Lobster-- was headed to Lubbock back in March when he disappeared.
His body was found in a field in eastern New Mexico. He had been shot once in the back of the head. Authorities now say Hickman staged his death to look like murder. They believe he duct taped his own mouth and even tied a gun to several helium balloons to make it float away after he pulled the trigger.

yeah I noticed that story while I was looking at the AJ about the damn house directly behind mine being burned down via arson....

Suffice it to say during my 9 years in Lubbock I saw at least 3-4 attempts to make the county wet, none of which succeeded. I'll believe it when I see the goods on the shelf.

$0 adjusted for inflation is still $0.

Look at the scale! Just because it's pretty damn close to the line doesn't mean it's $0, especially way back in the 1920's. Obviously, there's not much adjusting needed for the modern era, but there does seem to be some spikes around early 1920's, early 1930's, early-to-mid 1970's, and 1986-87. The very first spike, which seems to correspond to WWI, is easily representative of several billion dollars.

QUOTE ("http://www.measuringworth.com/")
Current data is only available till 2007. In 2007, $3,000,000,000.00 from 1916 is worth:

$58,461,090,225.56 using the Consumer Price Index
$41,541,358,581.06 using the GDP deflator
$121,641,190,667.74 using the value of consumer bundle *
$218,973,214,285.71 using the unskilled wage *
$281,659,520,947.03 using the nominal GDP per capita
$834,492,974,758.21 using the relative share of GDP

Pick your scale and the numbers of today don't seem nearly as drastic.

I did look at the scale. Look at that 1985 peak, at most that's $10 billion. you think 1985 $10 billion translates to $175 billion 2008?

And by your own post, $3 billion in 1916 = $58 billion in 2008. Still nowhere near $175 billion.

I will agree with you it's dumb to look at something like that without inflation, and whoever created it probably just wanted the "woah" reaction from people like cmac, but still.

For my purposes, I'm going to choose to use the Nominal GDP per Capita value as it proves my point the best laugh.gif

Oil closed at $118.58... that's nearly a $30 drop in less than a month. If this keeps up I bet we could see <$3 gas by the end of the year.
