I'm surprised there aren't any threads yet on the World Cup. Anyway, the question speaks for itself. I say F is the hardest, followed closely by E. We're in a pretty tough group with Italy and the Czech Rep. Here are the groups:
QUOTE Group A: Costa Rica Ecuador Germany Poland Group B: England Paraguay Sweden Trinibad & Tobago Group C: Argentina Ivory Coast Netherlands Serbia & Montenegro Group D: Angola Iran Mexico Portugal Group E: Czech Republic Ghana Italy United States Group F: Australia Brazil Croatia Japan Group G: France South Korea Switzerland Togo Group H: Saudi Arabia Spain Tunisia Ukraine Also, who do you think or want to win each group? I'd like: Germany, England, Argentina, Mexico, USA, Brazil, South Korea, Spain but think this will happen: Poland, England, Argentina, Mexico, Italy, Brazil, France, Spain. championship prediction: Brazil, of course. Runner-up: Italy This post has been edited by jonathan83: Jun 1 2006, 10:42 AM -------------------- ![]() |

Most consider group E to be the Group of Death, based on average team rank and that they have 3 top 15 teams.
Group C is a close second with powerhouses Argentina and Netherlands |

Brazil and Italy (if they meet) will meet in the Round of 16 or 8, not the final.
Group E is clearly the best, but F is strong as well ... neither group has a weak team. Germany is hosting and underrated, a dangerous combination. It's been forgotten, but Poland smashed the United States at Japorea'02 ... Italy thinks they got screwed in '02 (Italy is right) so they'll be out for some revenge. The Czechs are an unknown quantity -- tons of talent but their last World Cup was as Czechoslovakia in 1990 ... France will out for revenge just like Italy, and South Korea are the most cohesive team in the tournament ... all the talk has been about who Holland ISN'T taking to the tournament, but they're loaded like always. Group A: Poland, Germany ... Group B: England, Sweden ... Group C: Holland, Argentina ... Group D: Portugal, Iran... Group E: Czech Republic, Italy ... Group F: Brazil, Croatia ... Group G: France, South Korea ... Group H: Spain, Ukraine Final: Brazil and Holland Edit: I replaced Mexico with Iran as my second team from Group D. |

Every soccer fan in the English-speaking world refers to 2002 as the Japorea World Cup. Would you be happier if we called it the Kopan World Cup?
I understand that most of Korea is still pretty touchy about the whole hundreds-of-years-of-colonial-domination-and-human-rights-abuses-and-attempts-to-exterminate-Hangul-and-the-Korean-race thing, but in 2006, I think the ROK and Japan should reevaluate and worry about bigger problems (North Korea, China, etc) |

Personally i don't think F is the hardest group. I think E & C are harder. Between E & C, id say E is the hardest. If the US does anything like it did on 02, with italy & czech, its a hard group for the first round.
winners: Group A Germany Costa Rica Group B England Paraguey Group C Ivory Coast Argentina Group D Mexico Iran Group E Italy US (if not US then Czech) Group F Brazil Croatia Group G France Switz Group H Spain Ukraine This post has been edited by woody: Jun 5 2006, 01:26 AM -------------------- |

QUOTE (chook @ Jun 4 2006, 03:00 PM) wouldn't it been Japan/Korea because of the alphabet order? that's opening a whole can of worms. first off, korea and japan hate each other... probably korean hating japan moreso (for occupying their country, torturing, executing, and everything else grant said). so, many koreans refuse to spell korea with a K but instead with a C, so it comes before japan in the alphabet. and/or they spell japan with a Z, so it's zapan. BUT.. some argue that it was originally spelled Corea, but when Japan occupied Korea they changed it to a K so Japan could be ahead of them in the alphabet. and the Z thing comes from the fact that Koreans cannot pronounce the letter Z, instead they say "J", so the word "plaza" sounds like "plaja" -------------------- ![]() |

Portugals WC History: 1966: 3rd Place 1986: Out in 1st round 2002: Out in 1st Round Mexico, in the past 3 WC has made it to Round 2 Iran...well they don't have a great WC history, but I think they'll do better than Portugal and Angola this year. My decision cam down to Iran & Portugal. Portugal got a good coach, but i don't think they'll produce enough this WC to get out of the first round. p.s.: to say that Mexico is not good in soccer...they've got alot better team than Portugal -------------------- |

No, not hundreds of years before WWII... Japan's occupation of Korea was 1910-1945. They did it then. Or at least, that's what every Korean I've talked to about the subject says! QUOTE ... no. in Korean, 'Korea' (Hangook) appears at the end of the dictionary, and 'Japan' (Ilbon) is in the middle, surely the C(?)oreans would care more about their own dictionary than ours. well that's totally different. first off, korea has a big boner with the English language anyway, but most importantly, there's only one way to spell Hanguk in Korean since there's only one H sound. whereas in English, you can do it with a c or k. that's why. -------------------- ![]() |

Acknowledged, Portugal hasn't had alot of success at the World Cup, but there's more to it than that. Only one of those Portugal teams - 2002 - has ANY bearing on the current squad (same personnel, generation etc). Portugal started miserably (3-0 down after 30 minutes) against the USA but won the last 2/3 of the match 2-0. Then they massacred Poland (5-0 i think), and then lost to the (lucky?) hosts South Korea. Obviously not a good showing, but not as bad as simply saying "out in the first round" usually implies. They made the semis at Euro 2000 (win vs Germany, win vs England, win vs Turkey before losing to eventual champs France) ... they also got to the finals of Euro 2004 (win vs Spain, win vs England and win vs Holland). Bottom line, in the last 6 years, Portugal has played 30 minutes of truly awful soccer. They've got Luis Figo, Pedro Pauleta, Luis Boa Morte, Cristiano Ronaldo and Nuno Gomes, which (potentially) makes Portugal as good as anybody going forward, and that's good enough for me. |

im still wondering how the fuck we are 5 in the world...yeah we have a qualified team, but i just dont see us as that good
but then again that could just because we arent a traditional powerhouse in soccer either way, this game on monday should be an important one, czech is ranked 2 in the world (somehow) and i think it should come out as a draw or them winning, however, i hope we can pull some shit and make it through to the next round -------------------- bored...so i did this

South Korea traded japan 2002 world cup final match with an agreement that the whole world cup will be held under a name called "2002 Korea/Japan World Cup" instead of "Japan/Korea". so no matter how many english speaking retarded red neck sons of bitches call it "Japorea", it is in fact wrong to call it that way. anyway, USA thinks they can do anything and guess what happened ? 3:0 to Czech. ha ha -------------------- www.twitter.com/qhfxm

QUOTE (celebritygooner @ Jun 13 2006, 09:15 AM) South Korea were losing 1-0 for 2/3 of the game before they finally got their shit together and won 2-1 today. Did I mention that they only scored after their opponents had a man sent off? Did I mention their opponents were Togo? You can continue to talk shit right after you help me both find Togo on a map and name two of their players. All things considered, Germany06 is shaping up to be better than Japorea02 shut up we won. you lost haha ^^ and an idea which still fosters you that a well-known country will play better in football sickens me considering that there are so many african country players who play in a REAL MAJOR FOOTBALL LEAGUES (dont be confused with MLS, lol). Oh, I am sorry. I forgot you are prone to make such a comment since you are a red neck hick who thinks you know everything about sports and your comment alone should be solely respected in this forum. -------------------- www.twitter.com/qhfxm

Oh, I am sorry. I forgot you are prone to make such a comment since you are a red neck hick who thinks you know everything about sports and your comment alone should be solely respected in this forum. You don't know me or anything about how "redneck hick" I may or may not be, but I will reiterate. South Corea beat Togo. Togo. The challenge to name two players on the Togo team still stands. I didn't say anything derogatory about African football in general. Anybody who knows anything about football (hint: I know more than just a little bit) can name a dozen great African footballers -- N'Kono, Milla, Oliseh, Kanu, Okocha, Eboue, Toure, Kuffour, etc etc -- but if you'd come down off that self-righteous horse and look at the Togo team for what it is, you'd realize that I'm right. Here is a list of clubs of the Togo players: Two play for Metz, in the French first division. The French league is not on par with the English Premiership, Spanish La Liga, Italian Serie A or German Bundesliga, but it's not terrible. One defender is a bit-player for a good German club called Bayer Leverkusen, a fourth is a deep reserve who's never actually been in a game for English powerhouse Arsenal. The rest of the clubs represented by the Togo national team are: Djoliba (in Africa somewhere?), Mons, Apoel Nicosia, Benevento, Young Boys Berne, Brest, Beveren, Valenciennes, Brest, Admira Wacker, Poire sur Vie, Al-Sailiya (Qatar?), Louhans-Cuiseaux, Guingamp, YF Juventus (not the real Juventus, this is a Swiss team), Ciudad Murcia, Moulins, Etoile Filante (I think this is in Togo). Sure, this doesn't address the actual talent of the players, but let's analyze critically. 1-These guys play for an African minnow. 2-Only one of them plays professionally for a big club. 3-Nobody has ever heard of any of them. Is it POSSIBLE that these guys are really World Class? ... I guess, but come on. It's alot more likely that they aren't. Stop pretending South Corea's win is more than it is -- a layup against a team lucky just to be here. |

the only reason they won is cause Trinidad didn't have the energy at the end of the game. If they keep this shit up they're not leaving round 2 -------------------- |

a tie, since ghana won, we still have a chance
we NEED Italy to beat czech and we beat ghana. We are through If Italy ties Czech, we need to beat Ghana by 2. Or at least I believe that is how it will work? correct me if I am wrong if czech wins, we need to score quite a few and hope italy loses by quite a bit -------------------- bored...so i did this

i think you're right schwab.
we need to make a lot of goals against Ghana, but i'm hoping for an Italian win against Czech so we don't have to count on that. We've only scored 1pt in the World Cup so far...and it was because in Italian knocked it in Good game...kept my heart beating fast til the end. is it just me or does beasley suck a fat dick? The fucker didn't even play half a game and was walking around at the end like he was dead tired. Perhaps if he had played along with everyone else the whole game down a player then he would have a reason to be tired. His passes suck, he always bunches up with other players. KICK HIM OFF THE TEAM HE SUCKS.

I'll sleep in and catch France v. Spain. Should be more interesting. Less chance of an all-out slaughter. |

Brazil / France is going to be a doozy. Both teams were a little dodgy in the group stage but hit a nice stride in the 2nd round and may be coming into their own at just the right time.
