So I'm looking at two different routes for going from Albuquerque to Austin... one is a route I've done before, which goes through Lubbock (I-40, 84 most of the way). The other is longer, but supposedly faster... goes south through NM to hit I-10 in El Paso and take that most of the way to Austin. I've never driven I-10, what's it like? Is it in good condition, have a high speed limit? I'm inclined to take the second route just 'cause it won't be the same ol, same ol scenery.

I-10 is a fairly good road, less deer than 84. If going through I10, take highway 290 i think. It will save you some time instead of going through san antonio (goes through Johnson City I believe.

i-10 is fairly quick

on the news last night they said the speed limit will be raised to 80 from outside el paso to basically san antonio

if you take i-10, get gas in El Paso, then Ft. Stockton, then maybe junction

Drive from ep to sa is about 8 hours + about 1.5 to austin

I-10 is a good road, can't get lost from the lil shit towns off of it. you'll only hit a BP station outside el paso...twice (one in NM and one about 1.5 hours outside EP)

It was I-10 to 290, wasn't planning on going through San Antonio. My dad lives near Lakeway, so 290 brought us really close.

For those of you wondering about the speed limit, it's 80! Unfortunately, it's still 65 at night.

Stupid drive that was supposed to be 12 1/2 hrs turned into 14 1/2, I guess due to stops and the lower night time speed limit. Grrr.

The route was different, but I think if I have to make that drive again I'll go the way through Lubbock.

the section of 10 from san antonio to el paso is already 75, and they are supposed to add the 80 speed limit signs "within days" as of yesterday...so they should be higher by next weekend
