been milling around the idea of having some sort of life where I am neither sitting behind a desk, nor being shot at.
tossing the idea around of being a farmer. yesterday (Easter) I visited my family in childress and you know my uncle who's been farming 45 years seems pretty content and happy with his life. thoughts on farming? edit: the boards are dead as fuck |

The exotic animals is actually a cool idea... You could do things like Emu, zebras, etc.
I don't know if I'd farm cotton. Maybe soy or corn, that way you can sell it for ethanol or food. -------------------- "There is a level of cowardice lower than that of the conformist: that of the fashionable non-conformist." |

smaller organic farms are making pretty good profits and growing vegetables and such is a lot less stress than a large scale cotton crop
its a lot of money to begin and sustain a farm until you make enough profits in order to simply cut out using your savings. i know some people who have retired from the corporate life to live on farms and they've said it was really hard but now they are really happy plus i think the land is just beautiful and i know a lot of people get more out of their work and labor if its something like farming or raising animals hope you have some good investments though. i have a base knowledge in farming but i know a lot more about livestock /being jealous -------------------- Little monkeys making money

my family has been farming for 40+ years. I wouldn't trade it for the world. But, I don't think it's for everyone.
I just got back to Lubbock so I will say more later. Oh, and Stephan(?), why wouldn't you farm cotton? No way in hell I would ever farm corn. We've done that the past 10 years and it's not worth it. The soybean market is touch and go as well. Some years it's great, others not so much. |

I took care of my great uncle's farm in Vernallis, CA between my junior and senior year of high school. Honestly I missed the technology and having a lot more there whenever you wanted it. Work was hard sometiems, but othertimes I had plenty of extra time. I really don't see myself running a farm when older. My expereince was limited, but I learned a lot.

live in the mountains and have an apple orchard. Or get a vinyard and produce fine wine. That would be "a walk in the clouds"...

thanks for the input. I know about the exotics...my uncle has some ostriches and the eggs bring in good cash. also, out by chilicothe I saw a large herd of camels...fuckin camels? I guess there's a market...
basically here's the situation... my uncle has a shitton of land. been farming it ~40 years. no idea how much really, but I do know he farms cotton mainly, some soy and corn, and leases out 6,000 acres to deer/turkey hunters. he said that last year he made just as much money leasing the hunting land as he did from crops. crazy... regardless, he's like 60 now. his eldest son died when he and I were working at my dad's warehouse and a forklift fell over on him. my younger cousin is a "rocker" and not interested in taking over the farm at all. so it's like wtf do you do with a big ass farm with no one to take it over? then there's me. I dunno how much childress would get to me though...I mean I kinda grew up there always visitng the grandparents and all that, but I would always return to the LBK or amarillo. I guess I could build a nice ramp, have an empty pool, an mx track and jumps and , and grow some kb to keep me occupied in the free time. skateboarding farmer...I would probably be lynched. |

You could really focus on the hunting aspect of things then. Lease the land but also keep it stocked with cool animals, then you can charge more $$$. You could build some lodges on it and be a guide as well.
