Got permission to take Thermo-1 with the ME department (I am ChemE though). Already have a test on Wednesday and I still have to buy the book!

ChemEs are a lonely bunch here I think.

Can't register until right before school starts, but probably taking Modeling of Physical Systems, Applied Intelligence for Engineers, and Mechatronics I. Thought about taking Geometry of Mechs and Robots, but since I'm probably not doing robotics work for my PhD, probably not. Might see if I can sit in and/or audit it, though.

This is all at UT, not TTU.

There was one really hot girl in ChemE when I was there that a couple of my friends were after. Other than my friend working for the ChemE dept, I never went there.

I may take a journalism class in the fall.

A psychotic world we live in. The madmen are in power. How long have we known this? Faced this? And--how many of us do know it? Perhaps if you know you are insane then you are not insane. Or you are becoming sane, finally. Waking up. I suppose only a few are aware of all this. Isolated persons here and there. But the broad masses... what do they think? All these hundreds of thousands in this city, here. Do they imagine that they live in a sane world? Or do they guess, glimpse, the truth...?

I'm taking Principles of Language Study, Foundations in Music (elementary school music programs), and Educational Aspects of Exceptional Learners. Then this summer (in July) I'm going to take Mathematics for Elementary Education Majors. This is all at UNT though. I still love Tech more. :-)

I'm taking it with Timothy Maxwell. Wish I could take Oler since a lot of my classmates said he was really nice.

I looked at the syllabus for my course and it didn't say this course would be graded on a curve. At UT there was not a since engineering course I took that was graded according to final scores. Do professors here grade on a curve?

some are straight up, some are curved. In the EE dept its mostly straight up, so our gpa's tend to suck there. I'd say average GPA for a EE student when I went there was 2.8~2.9

Depends on the prof. Maxwell, not so much.

Thermo 1 is pretty easy, so I wouldn't sweat it too much, but Maxwell was one of my least favorite profs in the dept.

Get the solutions manual. I have an old one if you want it.

I couldn't fucking stand him, I had him for Thermo II and Design II.

Maxwell used to just scale the grades, he didn't ever actually curve them.

So basically whoever had the top grade in the class got %100 and whatever that difference between their grade and %100 was, that was how much he scaled the grades.

I have the .pdf file for Moran and Shipiro's "Engineering Thermodynamics" .... I'm sure Maxwell is still probably teaching out of that book.

There is probably a newer version out now, but the problems are identical they are just numbered differently so you'd have to kinda wing it on that, but overall they're still exactly the same problems....

Maxwell sure as hell isn't going to teach you how to attack thermo problems, so the solutions manual will.

Don't use it as a crutch however or you will be fucked on the tests .... use it as a learning tool and also use it to make sure you get his free %10 gimme because everyone else in that class will have the manual as well.

We're using a different text but I got the solutions manual for it and it's really really helpful! Sucks I got it so late.

I was asking about his grading process because he has three different graders that grade differently. There's one Indian dude and 2 Asian dudes. One of the Asian dude grades very leniently. This one guy in class didn't even complete the last problem worth 20 points and he gets a "-10". While the other two graders gave "-20s" to others who didn't finish it as well. I've been unlucky both times so I hope I get the gentle one for my 3rd Quiz.

I didn't. The only classes I had solutions manuals for were Mechanics 2 and Heat Transfer.

We're even then wink.gif.... I had one for Thermo II and Heat Transfer, but not for Mechanics II .... But I didn't take Mechanics II at Texas Tech either

I guess I had one for intro to design as well now that I think about it, but I think those were the only three. Never had one for thermo I, fluids, statics, dynamics, any of that.

But I also never took those classes at Tech

I don't remember using the Heat Transfer manual much, but the Mechanics II one was a goddamn lifesaver. The book was awful and the prof taught 100% straight out of it. Ugh.

I found out the hard way that unless you had the solutions manuals for classes at TTU in the ME college, you were fucked.

Coming from a junior college with 8 kids per class to 60+ per class was a completley different ball game.

I took Thermo I, Fluid Dynamics, Statics, Dynamics, Mechanics of Materials (Mechanics II) all at the junior college with maybe 10 kids MAX in each class ...

We took Thermo I as a 4 day a week class so by the time I got into Thermo II, I had already done Otto and Diesel cycles, and all that.... which, when I took Thermo II with Maxwell, I thought I'd be perfectly ok in since that and fluids was typically my best subject.

I was getting between %65 and %75 on all my homework assignements from maxwell, which was in line with what I got at my juco, and still pulled a B out of the class with ..

EVERYONE AND THEIR FUCKING DOG in Maxwell's class was pullin straight %100's on the homework assignments WEEK AFTER FUCKING WEEK in his class.

Finally I got fed up and asked some dude sitting next to me "Dude how did you do this problem? You keep getting %100 on everything so how do you do this?" .

He looks at me with a blank stare ... "......You don't have the solutions manual?" he says..

"...The what?"

"The solutions manual......"

In my previous 2 years, such a thing as a "solutions manual" was completley unheard of.

So, I learned that lesson the hard way ... heh smile.gif

Taking thesis hours, but I've already defended and turned in my thesis. All done =)

I had to take Thermo I for my "other engineering" credit (being an EE and all) -- I took it with Dr. Chyu. Big mistake.
