Thoughts?
Obama choosing her definitely has some political motive behind it, no matter how much Obama says a "bipartisan confirmation" is needed. If the Republicans raise too much of a fuss over her they'll lose more of the Latino vote and that's fine with the Democrats. My reservations about Sotomayor herself are the comments about empathy and the recent case involving the firefighters. We don't need empathy in the courts, we need an understanding of the Constitution and a desire to uphold it. Her ruling on the firefighter case is disturbing, because she agreed with the District judge's opinion that allowing the suit to go to trial would open the door for the black firefighters to sue the city for not making a test that is passable by them. I say "who cares". The state will have to deal with the problems it creates by making quotas and trying to fill them. I don't know enough about her but it sounds like she was chosen purely on race/sex.
