It seems like Perry is doing a lot lately to get the spotlight on him and to provide a strong counter to Obama's policies. No official announcement yet of course, but let's say I wouldn't be surprised... I first had my initial suspicion when he denied the federal funding for unemployment aid, but now with this, "Keep Washington out of Texas" bill, he looks like he is really trying hard to move up on the Republican ranks. Who knows, maybe he is just trying to retain his govern position in the next election against Hutchinson. *shrug* So what do the Repubs think about a possible President Perry? -------------------- ![]() |

I think whoever the Republican candidate is will have no problem winning. Not sure how I feel on Perry though. I really haven't researched him much.
<rambling> A lot of shifting is going on in people's views, especially congress. Despite the dems controlling congress, it seems like they are becoming a more conservative on stuff that used to be key issues. I.e. stuff like gun control. Big conservative organizations appear to be making inroads in congress, like the NRA. They're supplanting the big liberal organizations that used to have a lot of power like the ACLU. IMHO this is a very good thing. Now if we could just get them to sway more conservative on their fiscal and foreign policies I think we'd be ok. </rambling> |

No way he's running for president. Even he surely knows he wouldn't stand a chance.
Looks way more likely that he's trying to get attention in Texas so he can compete with Kay Bailey Hutchison. There's a lot more chatter than normal going around now about Texas seceding and what not, and I seriously wouldn't be surprised if Perry ends up favoring secession, so he can run for President of Texas. -------------------- ![]() |

i dont think so either, but there's definitely a lot more talk than usual right now.
hah even chuck norris was talking about it. and did anyone see the drudgereport yesterday? main headline was a huge texas flag, and perry calling for texas' sovereignty. not saying it would ever happen, but ppl sure are talking about it. -------------------- ![]() |

btw here are several links to some articles talking about the texas secession . a lot of interesting reading here...i just googled texas secession and found these.
1st: this is the news conference Perry made a couple days ago. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0LHrIxc-QyE 2nd: http://news.aol.com/political-machine/2009...t-texas-secede/ 3rd: http://www.tribbleagency.com/?p=4759 "Texas threatens secession: 4th: http://www.star-telegram.com/elections/story/1305537.html 5th: http://austin.decider.com/articles/chuck-n...resident,25622/ 6th: http://www.worldnetdaily.com/index.php?pageId=91103 Article by Chuck Norris talking about seceding 7th: http://www.burntorangereport.com/diary/840...texas-to-secede as you can see, it's not just right-winged news outlets floating this stuff around. again, i dont think it'll happen, but more people are getting into this. there are even some pretty big facebook groups. the big tea party thing near nasa had ron paul speaking supposedly. i didn't go but apparently there was a lot of people but it didn't last long. interesting to hear perry say that kinda stuff, but again I think it's just talk. I think it's just a bluff to get the idjits in washington to pay attention.

and we wouldn't miss texas. a match made in heaven I hope you enjoy walking to work or paying $10.99/gallon. In all seriousness, I doubt Perry wasn't saying this in jest because of what he said afterward about "not seceding, we have no reason to". -------------------- "There is a level of cowardice lower than that of the conformist: that of the fashionable non-conformist." |

and we wouldn't miss texas. a match made in heaven Seriously, shut the fuck up you arrogant hippie douchebag. We get it: you hate Texas. What do you want, a goddamn soy-chai latte and an oat-grain organic cookie for your troubles? ::EDIT:: And for the record, I'm against secession. I wouldn't enjoy Texas becoming a third-world country. And I think it's LOL-tacular how people in one of Perry's speaking functions where he mentioned secession were yelling out "SECEDE! SECEDE!" whilst waving American flags... This post has been edited by Psykopath: Apr 16 2009, 01:48 PM -------------------- |

What do you want, a goddamn soy-chai latte and an oat-grain organic cookie for your troubles? Ooh ooh, I'll take both! Texas could feasibly secede and be alright, but it'd be a chaotic transition for both it and the US for the first decade+. -------------------- |

I hope you enjoy walking to work or paying $10.99/gallon. In all seriousness, I doubt Perry wasn't saying this in jest because of what he said afterward about "not seceding, we have no reason to". He said once before that he wouldn't mind spending 10.99 a gallon. Too bad Dumas Texas provides heating oil for pretty much all that state. This doesn't make any difference in your statement. You're confusing confidence with arrogance. It sounds to me as though you feel those are one and the same. you're wondering if an elitest liberal pussy knows anything about confidence.... hell, the bastard still thinks it's the governments job to babysit him and tuck him in, and keep all the scary things away... -------------------- |

I didn't say you were wrong in your opinion, just that you enjoy the attention, which obviously you do. You wouldn't use the carefully chosen words you use if you didn't. I don't like grapefruit but I'm not so starved for attention that I go seek out the grapefruit lovers and let them know. Though, if my opinion on grapefruit was required, I'd mention that I don't care for it. Too bitter for my taste. I wouldn't go out of my way to mention my hellfury enraged hatred of the softball sized fruit and how I wish every single one of them on the planet would instantly die and that people who do like grapefruit are complete arrogant dumbasses and that I'd rather eat a piece of dogshit than a grapefruit and that grapefruit companies should be burned to the ground and all of their workers murdered along with their families. Two very different ways to have an opinion. |

well i did choose to go to college there. i just grew up wanting to be a red raider.
i feel about texas how the stereotypical european (or so i've heard) feels about americans. loud, obnoxious, overly cocky about nothing, gun-toting rednecks. there is no point whatsoever for exhaust that comes out of your dually vertically as if you were driving an 18-wheeler other than to be obnoxious. and absolutely nothing is bigger in texas. nothing at all. it's just like how people say they hate stupid people, and i feel as if the stereotypical texan is a stupid person. and as always with stereotypes there are exceptions. my best friends live in texas still, my family, and i get homesick for that sort of stuff all the time. the best times of my life were spent there, but i've just always felt like there were much better places to be. like i would fit in better elsewhere. and i do. i'm sure i'm not missed and i'm ok with that. oh, and i'd live in austin in a heartbeat. and one more thing in texas' favor. some of the nicest and friendliest people in the u.s. you don't notice that until you leave. -------------------- Don't sweat the petty, pet the sweaty.

So you feel that we're the nicest, friendliest, loudest, most obnoxious, cocky people?
You mention big truck stacks on a pickup... something I might see once a month... maybe not even that often. Nothing bigger in Texas? What kind of dumbass statement is that. It's a catch phrase. Just like the "everything that happens in vegas stays in vegas". Excuse me while I go over to some UNLV message board and shit talk them about how "Nothing that happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, HAR HAR HAR!!!!" And of course you'd live in Austin... that's where the emos go |

sounds to me that cmac doesn't hate texas, but that he hates how he can't relate to us. i'm not saying this in a cocky asshole fashion, because i don't denounce anything he said in his last post. (except the dualie pipes on your truck... i see that on rare occasions, and i can't help but comment on how small the drivers dick must be).
he sees us as loud, obnoxious, cocky and gun-toting. i know for sure i fit that bill, and i know that most of my friends do as well. but he's failing to understand how we feel about people like him. the cowardly, snivelling, snide remarking, "i'm superior because i care about the enviroment, and i'm sure the government will protect me" hippies. when said like that, it's definately more hurtful than what i mean, but it matches exactly how we stereotypically see people like cmac. the probelm i see it is that the people like cmac and us "texas stereotypes" have one very similar flaw. we are not accepting of others different from us. we can't relate, so we hate each other. -------------------- |

QUOTE You mention big truck stacks on a pickup... something I might see once a month... maybe not even that often. i saw it a lot, but whatever. big trucks that are lifted with huge mud tires and winches that have never been off the pavement are along those lines as well. and "cowboys" that have never ridden a horse or set foot on a ranch. -------------------- Don't sweat the petty, pet the sweaty.

I'd much rather be from a friendly accepting state that is PROUD, than be from a cocky rude elistist state.
But then again im not a cocky rude elitist.... those are just who i dislike (which-ever spectrum of politics they are on). -------------------- |

it's a catch phrase that reemphasizes the cockiness i am referring to. Uh, earth to whateveryournameis: catch phrases like that aren't started by the people that live there. They're started by visitors and tourists. yes. nice and friendly is something that is taken for granted and missed when it's gone. not dealt with on an everyday basis when i'm there. there's a difference. You failed to see the point. The point being that in the same breath you mention two completely different stereotypes and seem to be ok with both being a generalized stereotype for the entire state. i saw it a lot, but whatever. big trucks that are lifted with huge mud tires and winches that have never been off the pavement are along those lines as well. and "cowboys" that have never ridden a horse or set foot on a ranch. I fail to see how dressing a certain way or having large tires makes a person cocky. Sounds more to me like you just don't like that kind of stuff, so you associate it that way to justify your own feelings about it (i.e. OMG I don't like that, so there must be something wrong with it). For the record I think having large tires like that on a truck you mostly drive on pavement is stupid. But I don't think it's cocky. |

sounds to me that cmac doesn't hate texas, but that he hates how he can't relate to us. i'm not saying this in a cocky asshole fashion, because i don't denounce anything he said in his last post. You failed to see the point. The point being that in the same breath you mention two completely different stereotypes and seem to be ok with both being a generalized stereotype for the entire state. i get this point. i mentioned the stereotype that people are friendly because i was ok with it in the first place. i am not ok with the other stereotype. it is acceptable to have two different opinions of the same people. I fail to see how dressing a certain way or having large tires makes a person cocky. But I don't think it's cocky. everyone i've met that drive these things is cocky for no reason. this is my opinion. you are entitled to your own. i believe that the 'small penis syndrome' phrase to insult these types of people came from this cockiness. also, the sky is blue. go ahead and tell me it's aqua-marine hex #1f82de. -------------------- Don't sweat the petty, pet the sweaty.

i get this point. i mentioned the stereotype that people are friendly because i was ok with it in the first place. i am not ok with the other stereotype. it is acceptable to have two different opinions of the same people. So... you hate Texas because some people are cocky but others are nice... are there not cocky people in other states? Or is the clothes someone wears or vehicle they drive the only determining factor in your 'judgement' of an entire state? everyone i've met that drive these things is cocky for no reason. I'm sure you've met so many of them. You hate them because of what they drive so you wave them over to say hi and try and be friends with them don't you. You're forming your opinions based on watching someone drive. That is stupidity in its finest. You can take the nicest, sweetest, humblest old lady and when she gets in her V8 Caddy she'll run your ass off the road. Same with everyone else. Doesn't matter whether they're in a civic or a F350 with a 10" lift and super swampers. Everyone is an asshole on the road. this is my opinion. you are entitled to your own. Definitely, and I am making my opinion known. If you're going to express such an enflamed opinion, you can't wuss out and not expect some pushback. Though I still maintain that you only do this for attention, which we are providing and should make you feel all nice & emo-happy inside. So since we're exchanging opinions, it's my opinion that your reasoning is stupid and unfounded, and based more on the threatened feeling you get seeing someone drive a vehicle that's larger than yours. Do you see someone who wears boots and cowboy style clothing, but is driving a honda civic as a cocky bastard too? Doubtful, though I'm sure you'll say whatever you want just to try to make yourself sound more reasonable. i believe that the 'small penis syndrome' phrase to insult these types of people came from this cockiness. No it just came from seeing a large truck and making fun that the person was "making up for something else". I don't see where cockiness comes into play. also, the sky is blue. go ahead and tell me it's aqua-marine hex #1f82de. whatever that is supposed to mean. |

i just like the outdoors in a much different way than killing deer. But therin lies part of your problem. You see Texas as a whole as a bunch of deer hunters. That's an ignorant opinion. There are several major cities here and an extremely diverse population. It's silly to pin everyone as a cocky big truck driving hick. It's simply not true. |

the probelm i see it is that the people like cmac and us "texas stereotypes" have one very similar flaw. we are not accepting of others different from us. we can't relate, so we hate each other. I'm an environmentalist, liberal, educated, atheist, but I still love Texas. There is something to say about whenever I met a fellow Texan over here and I ask them where they are from, they respond "Texas" -- not the US. Not only that, they'll sit a bar and talk with you for hours even if it was the first time they met you -- that's how amazingly nice and genuine they/we are. And most of the time they are the gun-totin' lone-star drinking, country music listening people that I might have some political clashes with, but that doesn't mean we can't get along. Sure I don't think we're the "perfect" state and I certainly think that we have our fair share of problems (public education sucks for one) but I really wouldn't trade places with any other region. Something certainly special about it, even though I might not agree with the majority of citizens on key issues. My 2 cents. -------------------- ![]() |

And one last point: I got into an accident with one of those jacked up trucks once. We were both in the turning lane to go right south onto University when he went about ten feet into the intersection before noticing that a car was coming and proceeded to back up into my Ford Focus without even knowing I was there because he couldn't see me in his rear-view mirror. So I might be a little bias on that topic...

You don't hate Texas. You only hate certain people in Texas. Just like any other state, there will be nice people, there will be assholes. I have some now very good friends who just moved here from NYC & New Jersey about six months ago, and they have been amazed at how nice people are and the general hospitality they receive. People opening doors for them and saying hello to complete strangers. They said back in NYC these kinds of things were unheard of, that people would feel like you were wasting their time by talking to them.

So your little personal vendetta against Texas as an entire state is bullshit. jesus christ you analyze every detail. when i say i hate texas it's a blanket statement. texas includes these people. in my opinion they are in larger quantity than in other states. there are also other things that i am not particularly fond of. do i need to break down texas into everything it encompasses describing in list format things that i hate and don't hate? then we can do a weighted average and determine on a 1-10 scale if indeed i do really hate texas? perhaps hate is a strong word. would it make you more happy if i said that there are several other states that i would prefer to live in? is my choice of vernacular too harsh? I have some now very good friends who just moved here from NYC & New Jersey about six months ago, and they have been amazed at how nice people are and the general hospitality they receive. i agree. every state has it's problems. just the things that i consider problems are in vast quantity in texas and lesser quantity in other places. and they were obviously big enough to me to warranty a move. problem solved.

I thought this was a pretty interesting read:
What if Texas Decided to Split Up Into Five States Also, the blog that is from (fivethirtyeight.com) was awesome during the Presidential Elections. His algorithm to combine polling data predicted the results to incredible accuracy, and he seems to be spot on with his analysis. -------------------- ![]() |
