Heritage Apartments, Are they actually safe? Options

There has been a rash of crime recently at the Heritage; I've personally witnessed a vandalized car, an apartment break-in, and had my car stereo stolen. With so many students living there, this is something we should probably be concerned about.

There used to be cops actually living in the apartments, but I haven't seen that in a while. Maybe the management stopped cutting them deals or they were only there by chance before - I couldn't say.

Have any of you noticed a rise in crime? Any ideas on securing your stuff? Any suggestions on cheap places in safer neighborhoods?

Nail down all windows, have two deadbolts in your doors or use a floor-bracketed securing bar (if your doors open inward), leave a TV or radio on every time you leave.

Best idea is to leave ANYWHERE other than "student oriented housing." Those places are hot targets for thieves.

Had the window in my blazer smashed out and attempted stereo theft my freshman year (lived in bledsoe). sad part was the window cost 3x what the stereo would have.

Had a nice big bootprint put in the door of my cutlass because some dudes got in a fight next to it (lived in sneed).

Had some jackass kids runnin around the neighborhood shooting out car windows with BB guns, shot out my roommate's window, when I lived in the neighborhood between 19th & 34th, university & ave Q.

I never lived at Heritage, but I do remember checking it out when Ryan was apartment-hunting. Didn't get good vibes.

I lived at Bear Creek Apts and St. Francis Village (both owned by the same property manager), over on 17th & 18th near Quaker. They were both fantastic and safe. The only crime I remember was a couple of car stereo thefts, but that was part of a rash of them across the whole city. I forget how much Bear Creek was, but St. Francis was $700-something for a 2-bedroom, 2-bath, 1300 sq. ft. apartment.

I lived at the Intern my first year at tech, and it was as cheap of place as I could find ... hated it though

Canyon Crossing wasn't too bad but it was a little far from Tech.

Don't get me started about that shit. My ex used to live at RP and I was over there all the time. When my truck got towed I talked to the guy who towed it and he said the cops KNEW those fucking kids were running drugs and their parents were running a drug ring and meth lab out of their house right behind the apartments. Those kids were going around sexually assaulting girls and selling coke to students. The cops were either 1. scared to raid the place, or 2. didn't give a shit. One student saw them breaking in to his Bronco and tried to stop em and ended up getting beaten with a baseball bat. I tried to contact the SWAT team and the DEA but my complaints fell on deaf ears. No one seemed to care.

LPD was the most inept and pathetic police force I've ever encountered.

Lubbock has a lot of rough areas to be honest, and I just don't think LPD has the task force to crack down on it. I mean, look at the area around Estacado High School (MLK area)... I subbed there, and was afraid for my life. Too many hoodlums

I'm sure they don't have the manpower. That isn't the point.

When they have hard evidence they never follow up on it. When I was dating another ex someone broke in to her house during Christmas break of '03. He basically lived there for over a week, left fingerprints all over the place, left his email address saved on her computer (which coincidentally enough, was his FIRST AND LAST NAME @ yahoo.com), and was caught with her PS2, which we'd already turned in the serial number for and they matched. This guy had been arrested FIVE previous times for burglary.

Apparently that wasn't enough evidence to convict him.

They're a joke.

They don't really do much about drunk drivers there either, and I think that's just as big of an issue. I really think it all boils down to room in the jails and manpower. That's just my opinion. No city blatantly ignores crime problems, especially a city with a large student base and a growing population.

I don't know how inept the LPD is, but there did literally raid those houses back there ...

You'd think that, but I've lived in an apartment directly on an access road to the loop for the past four years now and have never had any problems with my truck or known of any problems for anyone in my building. I do think there were some break-ins on some of the more interior buildings' vehicles though.

But. any property within a 5-mile radius of Tech could be considered a student property even if it isn't marketed as such.

Remember "The Center"? How they tried to market that as "upscale downtown lubbock urban dewllings" and it was anywhere from $800 -> $1400 a month?

And then somehow magically %95 of the population there were students driving BMW's? For a lot of people who came from Dallas, Houston $800 a month for an apartment didn't even phase them.

But, it's not just Lubbock, anywhere you have a lot of mexicans there's going to be a lot of crime, then when you combine that with drunk stupid college students, there's naturally going to be more crime...

Then when you combine mexicans, and college kids, you have the makings of drug buyers, and people who obviously sell lots of drugs ....

It's kind of inevetible.

But, any college campus is going to have a higher crime rate....it's pretty much that way ANYWHERE, even in Wyoming.

I lived at Raiders Pass for a year and had nothing but problems with the area around the complex (including the Heritage). My truck was broken into twice, I had kids trying to sell me stuff while their "cousins" stood behind them and gave me the evil eye, and I witnessed a full out assault on a middle-aged guy who was walking north on Indiana.

No I'm not. Let's see... have someone pay anywhere between $50 and $500 out of their own pocket or spend money locking the kid up in an overcrowded jail/prison, trying him in a court with an already full docket, and then assigning him to a probation officer knowing full well he will violate probation and start the expensive process all over again. No offense, because I had a deck and stuff too, but I don't want my taxes to increase because a bunch of college kids had mommy and daddy buy them a $30k vehicle and then deck it out. I wouldn't be crying if my car had been broken into either. I would want them to be arrested for a more serious crime so they serve serious time.
