I think that those degrees are interchangable for jobs that just require a degree and there aren't many jobs that require a specific one of those.

yeah but your other degree is also on that list... seriously, what has crawled up your ass lately? You and Kevin not doing well? Ever since you two started dating, you started acting like a civil person then all of a sudden like a week ago you went back to being a bitch. And just as Christine said, Communications is not the same as Journalism. Communications teaches how to do public speaking, communicate effectively, etc. I have a degree in writing for newspapers, magazines, etc which I've already had 2 major stories published in the Austin American Statesman and another story published in a periodical. If I wasn't doing the whole pregnant thing, I would be interning at a paper right now. Also, I have found that finding a job with my degrees is quite simple. |

It helps to be able to spell periodical. I just woke up. Give me a break. Oh that and my spell check on firefox has been acting retarded lately. Not that I can't spell, but I have become very reliant on Word catching my spelling errors. Yeah... I am one of those people. I'm more of a punctuation and grammar buff, but you don't see me going around correcting everybody now do you? I see correcting spelling on here just as pointless/annoying honestly. That is unless someone is frequently putting "your" instead of "you're." That annoys the hell out of me as it is something that should have been learned in the second grade.I just fixed my spelling though... weee And you know what is weird... When I am typing, Firefox only finds certain misspellings, but when I go to edit a post, it finds them all. SOOOOO weird. |

That list should have been the 15 most worthless college degrees and also had:
Psychology - Get a job subdueing teenage crack babies with prescription drugs in a "bad kids" ward. Sociology - Get a job working for a state government agency handing out welfare checks to crack babies crackhead parents Environmental (Sciences, Chemistry, et all *) - Get a job making "Go Green" stickers for some whack ass political group as your college professors have brainwashed you too far to accomplish anything else with your life. * if you get a BS in environmental engineering at least you've learned enough math and physics and chemistry you can get a real job doing something else hopefully. Politicle Science - If you can even get a job, you're probably going to be relegated to campaigning for minimum wage for whatever party you've decided to be affiliated with. If you get a PhD in this and actually learn some math maybe you'll make campaign manager some day. It's tough to get a job when you have a BS in BS .... literally. Women's Studies - You can get a job being a professional dyke and teach man-hating to other weirdos at some back asswards liberal arts college in Southern California. -------------------- I r Ur Gawd!

Actually it's a BA (at least mine was), and I had job offers that were pretty nice with just that (legal researcher in a law office here in town, other desk/research jobs)...though I've decided to devote my time to other endeavors. It's also a good "prep" degree for Law School, which I will be taking the LSAT here in the next few months. This post has been edited by Psykopath: Jun 5 2008, 08:26 PM -------------------- |

Which one? let me dig up the email, been a while since that offer. It was basically working research on cases trying to help out those who were wrongly convicted (as determined by new evidence and such) ::EDIT:: Here it is, the Innocence Project of Texas http://ipoftexas.org/ more of a non-profit mixed with a legal firm. I just don't want to do law school so meh. I like what I learned though. I find it to be practical. It's just that employers see philosophy and think psychology. Honestly, I think a bachelor's in psychology is more useless than philosophy but that's just my opinion from what I have gathered. I think that because so many people have psychology degrees and there are hardly any jobs that want someone with specifically a bachelor's in psychology. I personally know a lot of people with psychology degrees and not a single one is working in his/her field. They seem upset about this too. I just wanted a degree that would get my foot in the door at jobs that required a degree in any field. Journalism was the degree I got once I figured out what doors I wanted to be stepping into.
It's also a good "prep" degree for Law School, which I will be taking the LSAT here in the next few months. |

If you mean philosophy is a good prep for law school because it provides a high gpa to match with your lsat... then you are correct. Other than that... yeah... no. Same with political science. Honestly, the best "prep" for law school is being able to write an essay very well, as well as reason out shit on a test like the proffessor wants. Im an editor for a law review at my school and i've yet to write an essay worthy of an "A" (save for Scalia's class)... but then again i am not a very smart person (comparatively with who i go to school with).
Oh and any easy degree that you can get an 4.0 in, no matter what it is in, is not worthless if you are just wanting to apply to law schools. They mainly look at gpa (disregarding what in), and combine it with the LSAT. -------------------- |

I know I did another undergrad degree, but I never really noticed how useful my degree was until I went back to school. I had an obvious advantage over other students. Not to mention, in my mass comm law class, we talked a lot about philosophy since law goes hand in hand was the reasoning and argumentation associated with law. Heard of Hume, Locke, or Rawls? Admittedly, though, I took a philosophy of law class at Tech and hated it more than any other class. That class bored the crap out of me, but I think it was more the professor than anything.

I also know this for a fact. 8 years ago when I worked as a network tech for the State of Wyoming DOE, they wouldn't even consider people for "counselor" positions unless they had a master's degree if their BA was in sociology, psychology, etc ... and, even if they did have a master's degree, they started out at the same pay I was getting as a 19 year old kid with no college, but I knew how to fix computers. Yeah that pretty well sounds like as worthless of degree to get as I can think of. -------------------- I r Ur Gawd!

I've never been fired in my entire life. Pull your head out of your ass. Also, if you'd have fucking read at all what I said, I said the previous state government agency wouldn't even hire somone for a counselor position ***WITHOUT A MASTERS DEGREE IN PSYCH, SOCIOLOGY, ETC**** and that I was making as much as they were starting out as a computer tech. What a valuable degree to get. This effecticley means people who get a 4-year BA in those fields have worthless degrees. -------------------- I r Ur Gawd!

just because you get a degree that isn't an expensive technical degree and don't immediately being working doing EXACTLY WHAT YOU DID IN COLLEGE doesn't make it useless. Christ, having a BA still opens plenty of doors and opportunities, and while I learned content, i also learned skills that I can apply in many fields. college doesn't have to be vocational training in order to be useful. Fuck the first part of any job is generally learning how to the job their way, and regardless of your degree that on the job training is a huge element.

What is the point of going to get a psychology degree then going to work waiting tables or something? How many people do I know who got degrees such as this, spent 3 years doing the same job they did in highschool, then if they got lucky found something slightly related to what they got those degrees in? The simple fact of the matter is that many of the degrees in question in this thread are much easier to get than the more technical degrees are, therefore a lot more people obtain them. This devalues the degree as a whole. To me, a college degree is an inevestment. What is the point of spending all that time and money getting this degree that for all practical purposes has proven completley useless? I can't for the life of me see what good going to college and getting a degree only to go do something thats completley unrelated. -------------------- I r Ur Gawd!

Just as so many of the engineering students I work with can't write a decent essay to save their lives and struggle with communicating basic ideas. I didn't want to spend my career in a technical field, I am people oriented. I went for English Lit and Philosophy because they engaged me and required me to think in ways that I wasn't used to. I enjoyed it, and I knew that I was going to use my degrees to do something else, whether it be grad school or law school, because I wanted to be able to understand concepts quickly, to adapt the ideas and see bigger pictures with them. I know you do similiar things in your work, but just dont' tell me that everyone has to go to college to get a degree where they are going to be working in a technical field because that would devalue your degree. You're generalizing and so am I, but I am using my degrees every day, and have been nationally recognized for what I do through my position. Also, maybe so we don't end up with jobs that make us work in Vernal Utah? Just kidding about that one though, even english majors fuck an eskimo once in awhile. |

I think we're straying from the main idea here... keyword being "Worth". If we're talking in terms of cash money, I think in general the list is correct. It's not targeting you specific people who have those majors and saying you do not make decent money. It's giving a list of the 10 most worthless majors. In other words: The 10 majors that make the least amount of money. As in, sum up all the people in X major and compare their income to all the other ones.
I'm sure there are plenty of examples on both sides of the coin, Nuclear Physics people on the streets begging for money (well, maybe), as well as Philosophy majors who are in the Fortune top most wealthy people. To the 2-3 people on here getting huffy about their major being listed, just take it as a compliment to yourself that you succeeded where some often don't. |

i think philosophy is valuable it's just that in this fast-paced materialistic consumerism-based society, people have no time for philosophy or philosophers That's because philosophy doesn't accomplish anything. It's like....who can own a tree? Who can own a rock? I remember the one "Intro to Philosophy" course I took, the instructor took an entire week to explain to us that the whole reason Socrates believed there was a god was because of chairs. what type of function would you have a philosopher serve? expanding the consciousness of humanity, pondering our roots and where we're headed, perhaps bringing us all closer together and ending the hate... basically, educating us all so we don't turn out like you where everything is in black/white terms |

how about thinking rationally, thinking "outside the box", thinking logically.
I can name numerous reasons how a philosophy helped me during meetings about on how something should be handled that seem pretty simple but people who are the developers or engineers or program managers stump on. -------------------- |

You don't HAVE to take your basic degree then "OMG I NEED A JOB THAT APPLIES THIS." I have multiple degrees yes, and my philosophy degree proved its worth in my graduate studies. That is worth to me. And i'm not getting upset about my degrees being on the list, i'm was getting heated about people who ignorantly assumed called was a gigantic technical school and all other majors were pointless electives. |

Ok, I'll clarify my thoughts on the whole philosophy thing.
Basically everything I've ever talked to a philosophy major about in life, thought about, lied awake at night trying to figure out, etc .... whatever .... I thought of when I was between the ages of 14 and 20. There was absolutley nothing left for philosophy to teach me in college. I seriously was laughing my ass off at all the people going "OMG! I've never thought like this before!" when my professor was likening the reason Socrates believed there was a god to why mankind built chairs. I mean I was literally like "uhhhh ... what? You've never questioned the existance of god before? life, nothing? Wow you live in a damp paper bag." Egotistically, I freely admit ... I thought this all was far beneath the level of thought I was on. If you want to talk about thinking outside the box ... That's usually the first place I think, because quite frankly, boxes are boring. However, most of the time, there's a reason that there are boxes. Boxes work. Deluding yourself into thinking that quasi-boxes, round boxes, slightly discolored boxes, whatever, work better than the regular old box ... well, statistically speaking is rare. There is a reason there are boxes and not oddly shaped quasiboxes. See, when you're thinking outside the box, eventually you run out of boxes to think outside of, so you invent new boxes entirley. Then you think outside of them. I invented this new theory called the 'Puking Seed' theory when i was back in highschool, but that's a time for another discussion. Anyways .... I guess I pretty much felt like if a dipshit like me was already on a plane of thought far beyond what this philosophy crap was supposed to be about I had no use for it whatsoever for it in life and it was pretty much just a load of hooey. heh But what's really interesting is, if I go back to school to get a PhD in engineering I don't get an actual PhD in engineering, I get a "Doctorate of Philosophy". Fascinating ... -------------------- I r Ur Gawd!

you're still in the box because as soon as you got out of the box you built up another box around you There is no outside of any box. There is no inside of any box. There might be a box, but then again, it could be a round square, or a square circle. Humans can only think to a certain extent. You have to about kill yourself by self-induced natural causes ... meaning, you have to basically decided you're going to die then die without any help ... i mean no deliberate suicide, you just literally have to shut your body off .... to see more than 4 dimensions for yourself. It's tough, but once you've reached that point, you can find yourself there more often than others, albeit randomly. I've been trying my whole life to figure out any kind of correlation between being on a hyperdimensional plane of thought and what triggered it in 4-dimensional space .... I haven't been able to do so yet. There are others amongst the humans who have this capability, however, to my knowledge, no one has harnessed it yet. Many have tried and even made such claims, but were this true .... things on this planet would be different. Very different. -------------------- I r Ur Gawd!

Some of the greatest political philosophers paved the way for our government. As stated before, if you know anything about government and law, you know that Rawls and Locke wrote significant works that our Constitution was based off of.
Philosophers can also get jobs at hospitals serving on the ethics committee. Philosophy degrees can also get you in the door to places that a psychology undergad degree can. If you have ever taken an intro to psychology course, the first thing they teach you is that psychology began as a branch of philosophy. I've worked some pretty cool jobs in my day all because I had a bachelor's degree and knew how to write well. If you aren't sure exactly what path you want to take in life and see undergrad as simply a pathway to a graduate degree, then I can definitely see where majoring in a liberal art would be useful. Remember, a lot of you spent 5 years working on your BS in engineering. It took me a little under 3 years to get my BA in philosophy. I had no credits entering school. I'm definitely not bragging about that. I'm just saying it was the cheaper route at the time. Once I finished, I worked for a while, decided I wanted to pursue journalism, and enrolled in undergrad again. Why did I chose undergrad instead of grad school for journalism (I could have just as easily entered into the grad program)? It was yet again cheaper. I only needed 2 semesters of courses for another BA. A Master's would have taken longer. Guess that worked out well for me because I finished 2 months before the baby is due. Definitely wasn't a planned pregnancy, but it something that I am very very happy about and wouldn't ever change. I guess my point is, there is absolutely no difference in value between any of the liberal arts degrees *shock* including psychology *shock* at the UNDERGRAD level. They are though in fact useful degrees but not in the same way as an engineering degree or nursing degree. It's just a different route to take. |

How many philosophy classes did you take? One, but it wouldn't have mattered ... "Ooooohhh and Aaaaaaah'ing" myself with gee-whiz brain tricks is quite literally beneath me even now. -------------------- I r Ur Gawd!

You know, you're pretty smart when you aren't talking about cumslutting on underage girls -------------------- ![]() ![]() |

Dogmeat takes an intro to philosophy class, thinks he knows everything on the subject, and then Will comes in here and agrees with him... oh this is laughable

Dogmeat takes an intro to philosophy class, thinks he knows everything on the subject, and then Will comes in here and agrees with him... oh this is laughable I don't need to be an expert in philosophy to realize it's pretty much a worthless degree. I learn how to think through things called common sense and life experience, whereas you learned the same thing by wasting three years of your life and about 40 thousand dollars in college. Granted, I can't quote Socrates verbatim, but that really doesn't matter, since I've never found the need to quote Socrates in my life, nor will I in the future. Somehow I doubt you quote him at all in your life either. It's funny that you used to make fun of your degree when we were together, but now whenever someone makes fun of it on a messageboard you get butt hurt. Now that is laughable -------------------- ![]() ![]() |

Will, you really are ignorant sometimes. If you want to talk about stuff we told each other, you said yourself that your business classes were pointless. I would venture to say just as "useless," if not more so, than my philosophy classes.... for obvious reasons that I won't say so as to avoid the low blows.
If you still think that all a philosophy class teaches is how to "think things through" then you are even more ignorant. In fact, that's really not what it is about at all. Philosophy, in my opinion is a mix of English, history, and math. I like all three a great deal. In my classes, we were graded on our grammar, spelling, and punctuation in the papers we wrote = English. We had to learn a great deal about great thinkers in the past like Frank, Descartes, Locke, Rawls = history. Finally, logic is math without numbers. It's basically balancing giant equations = math. I have it in my mind to post a paper or two I wrote on metaphysics. You read part of one once and stopped because you said you didn't understand it. It's not that it doesn't make sense. It's that your mind couldn't grasp the concepts. (I know this because I got an offer to the grad program from the philosophy dept for the very paper I had you read) I don't get "butt hurt" by ANYTHING you say. Trust me on that one. |

I don't really feel that any degree is "worthless", because just about any college degree will help you get a job. but to those getting upset that their degree was in the list, I'd be interested to see your top 10 list of common degrees which are worth the least. ("worth" as in $$)

("worth" as in $$) that's why I put "useless" in quotes. I agree with you. A degree gets you in the door to jobs that require a degree. Once you are in the door, it doesn't matter what degree you have. It matters how you perform your job. That's where the $$$ comes in. I never said a philosophy degree would land you a job that will make anything close to what you engineers and computer programmers are making STARTING OUT. My point is that it is no more "useless" than a history, English literature, psychology degree etc. (unless of course you are certified to become a teacher in those areas) |

Yeah jessica I'm really not trying to talk shit on your degree, although I'm sure that's how I'm coming off, but I don't think I would have learned a single thing from it in college.

My business classes WERE useless sorta. They were teaching me less about business (you know, the goddamn reason I went to college) and more about how to study well. I learned how to study in high school; that's the point of high school, to prepare you for college. And I'm not talking about entry level freshman classes; these were junior and senior level marketing and economics classes. If you're expecting me to defend my major I won't. Marketing is an easy major. I just never really tried since my reaction to learning the material was usually "I've known that for years" or "well duh" -------------------- ![]() ![]() |

I'm just saying that taking an intro course doesn't say much for the actual major. I took an intro to mass comm course and it was total BS

mass comm imho would be on my top 10 list Accept that a starting position with a newspaper is in the 33-38k range. Psychology starting pay is at 22k if I remember correctly. I'm sure there are 9 other degrees you could fit in between those numbers...Hell an internship with a newspaper pays about as much as the starting pay for a bachelor's in psychology gets. This is based off of some average pay article I read a while back that said psychology was the lowest.

I just never really tried since my reaction to learning the material was usually "I've known that for years" or "well duh" Why anyone would waste money going to college with that kind of attitude is beyond me...I don't see a point in college either for most degrees (exception is engineering, nursing, architecture) except to have the certificate that gets me in the door to jobs. I didn't learn too much that I probably couldn't have figured out on my own by reading books, but that's any liberal art degree. I guess I see my degree as a hell of a lot more useful despite having spent 40k on it in three years than the probably 100k your parents spent sending you to school for 7 years to not get a degree. No matter who spends the money, the money is still spent so don't rub in my face that I spent 40k when lord knows you spent a hell of a lot more and lived a lot more comfortably while in school. If that were me, I would have felt guilty not finishing. I didn't like college at all either. That's why I hurried my ass up to get out of there. I didn't BS around for almost a decade. And I'm really not trying to be rude. I'm just trying to make a point. A degree is more useful than no degree to the greater population. Yes, there are exceptions, but they are few and far between.

I just said it'd be in my top 10 as far as bad money, not that it was #1 Working for a major newspaper which is possible if a student interns while in school, that is the pay. I know it because I have researched jobs at the Austin American-Statesman, San Antonio Express News, Houston Chronicle, Dallas Morning News, etc. Working for a small town paper out of school, you can expect upper 20's, lower 30s.
And I highly doubt mass comm majors leave school and average 33-38k. At least, not in Texas. |
