this reminds me of that stupidass article someone posted a while back about how electric cars should make noise so blind people dont step out in front of them
I watched a CNN video the other day about some 8 year old kid that got hit by a Prius because he couldn't hear it driving down the road. The kid wasn't blind. He just didn't look both ways before crossing. He relied on his sense of hearing instead. When the Prius engine shuts off and the vehicle is running on battery power, it makes very little noise. Can't say I blame the kid. The other day when I was walking to take the trash out, I realized I did the same thing when walking through the parking lot. Thank God there were no shitty Toyota Prius' around laugh.gif

I kinda do see a problem with blind people not being able to know what kind of money they have. People will rip them off.

I have a problem with not being able to hear battery operated vehicles too... but mainly because I just think the Prius sucks. My dad keeps trying to get me to buy one. If I'm going hybrid, I'm getting a Honda Civic Hybrid

If you step into the road and get hit by a car, its your own damn fault. Short of blind people, who the hell sticks their ears out, then goes "hmm ok sounds good lemme cross now"?

I always use sounds to know what's around me, but I can also hear pretty darn good. I'm sure you can hear something on that car, the whir of the magnets in the motor or the wheels or the wind blowing past the car. Something.

(honda has toyota build their modified hybrids for them. this is regarding the hating the prius if buying a hybrid would go with the civic sillyness eventhough the civic doesnt get as good of mpg)

and generally the safer bet is go to the original producers of the technology

just had to have my prius rant!

The Prius looks like shit though. That's why I don't want one. Also, I would like you to source where you got that. The Civic Hybrid gets 40+ mpg consistently, and often gets over 50. I have a consumer reports account smile.gif. Also, not to make your Prius argument stronger, but supposedly Honda has had some issues with their batteries or something so I would think that would mean that Toyota isn't building for them. Please link something about Toyota building parts for Honda because I just find that completely unbelievable, especially since Honda's Civic does get superior gas mileage (contrary to what you say) and the car is a lot more fashionable. Why would they build for the competitor?

because they have the lock-down on the top technology.

and civic getting higher mpg than a prius? why dont you read in your consumer reports about that because its incorrect

also i drove for 10 minutes in a prius when i test drove and averaged 99.9 mpg. the rest of the average mpg was 47mpg (this being the 1st time i ever drove one and thus wasnt getting the best mpg it can get)

I never said higher. I said they aren't that drastically different. And are you going to source your "Toyota building Civic parts" claim or not?

Ok, here is the thing about hybrid vehicles, Cathryn. Yes, you are going to save money on gas. Yes, the technology is even coming down in price enough to make purchasing a hybrid affordable. The Honda Civic hybrid is only like $21k or something like that. BUT (and this is a big BUT) they are a poor LONG TERM investment. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely agree that they are a great short-term investment (ie you save money now) but in the long-run you lose. Why? Because hybrids have absolutely the worst trade in value. In fact, you may even be upside down on a trade-in with a hybrid (in other words, you owe more money than the car is worth so they have to tack that difference onto the price of the new car you wish to purchase). It would be better to straight out buy a new car without using your Prius as a trade-in. There is no market for used hybrids right now. So, down the line when you decide you want to purchase a new hybrid vehicle, you are not going to have anything to use as a trade to lower your monthly payments. It will probably be another 5 years before they perfect the technology to make it good enough to have value when you go to sell it.

I'm definitely not saying don't buy a hybrid. Hell, I want one, BUT to act like you are saving SO MUCH MONEY is completely wrong. They are more expensive initially (albeit like I said, they are coming down in cost) AND they have no value when you are done with them. Yeah, all cars lose value, but it's always nice to have a little something invested in such a big purchase. Choosing a car that depreciates slower is always a wise decision.

In other news, Ford and other auto makers are drastically cutting back on SUV production. Many are predicting that the SUV could become obsolete here in the next year or two if gas prices continue to rise. Trucks are no longer being bought for personal use anymore. They are really only being purchased by people who use them for business. I can't say this is a bad thing. I actually agree with it. I HATE SUVs. I drove a truck for 2 reasons: 1) I moved a lot and 2) I hate being the little person on the road. In Texas, the bigger the better is the attitude. I didn't want to be the small vehicle in an accident. Selfish, I know.

And how we started arguing about this in a blind thread, I have no idea.

it's amazing how little a clue you have. you actually think that mpg display is real time correct??!?!?

my friend's dodge pickup, big uber v8 smog edition will show like 75mpg when he's idling forward too. it's a simple computer calculation based on the mass air flow sensor, vehicle speed, and a few other things. it's nowhere near correct most of the time.

Not in stop and go traffic, on long trips it is.

The "instantaneous" fuel economy calculations are complete bullshit but the ones that are average, at least if the vehicle has been at a constant speed for awhile, are usually pretty close ... at least they are on GM vehicles.

But yeah the 'instantaneous' ones are crap.

I wanted a Prius....just didn't wanna pay $30,000 for it (cus that was the price of the only one on the lot).

I went with my 2009 Matrix....was $10,000 less, and gets decent gas mileage.

package 3 is the model with backup camera, bluetooth, 6 disc cd changer, and some other amentities. a package 6 for example would be a touring model - bigger wheels, leather option, different suspension and a bigger spoiler etc.

i ordered from toyota directly meaning i didnt buy a car off a lot or a person. the plant in japan makes it and ships it to a dealership, the prices on priuses are set by toyota, the price its set at is the price they sell the new cars at. if your dealership says otherwise for a brand new prius you ordered they are scamming you

oh oh ! hybrids and priuses lose all their value????? they retain their value better than virtually any other car. just people talking who dont know what they are talking about!

$23,569 minus what i got for the sale of the mustang. putting ending price about $10,300 (im glad i was able to sell the mustang. dealers were going to pay 9k for it!!! but a woman that didnt commute said it was her dream car. i was afraid with gas prices they way they are itd be like trucks in some states and places would only take them - if at all - for waaaaaaaaay under bluebook.... which i guess is what they offered me with that measly 9k)

avg trips around the hood 99mpg, trips to grocery store 56-63mpg, highway 50+. this is also driving like a prius is just any other car.

option was to buy new for 23,569 or get a 2005 lower model with 60k for 21,500 from a carmax south of houston... these cars straight out dont devalue. thats why its just hard to get any used ones. there were 2 in houston that i found (0 on car lots) 1 having a salvage title after a major accident. and people in some states are waiting several months for theirs (mine 5 weeks)

i know a guy that fit a 9ft ladder in his, people that moved with 13 shoe boxes, a dresser and 15 drawers. and an owner thats over 6.5ft tall. the space is totally insane inside!

when you are in a prius and drive it around its not your fault. you literally just cant stop talking about it

in addition to having a backup camera, bluetooth, optional navigation i chose not to get (too cumbersome) and amenities youd have to buy a luxury sedan to get for under 25k!

my apologies but I CANT STOP

You still didn't answer my question... how did you buy it "direct" from Toyota? You call the plant in Japan? The Toyota website just points to Houston dealerships.

and TTL on 25k should be something like 27 at least, depending on warranties and such.

no sorry i didnt pay 27k. 27k would have been almost 2k outside of my budget (why is this an argument? you dont actually have 5 tvs!). my 7yr/100,000 mile platinum toyota warranty was 990 that i did not add onto the price. and i did explain what buying direct is

I'm not arguing with you Cat my God I'm just asking how you bought your damn car. I've never heard of someone buying a vehicle direct from the manufacturer and am curious. I asked you how you bought direct and your answer was basically "I didn't buy from a dealer". well duh.

1. How did you order of your vehicle?
2. What method did you use to pay for it?
3. Where did you sign paperwork, and pick up the vehicle?
4. What was the purchase price, and tax + title + license, etc?

and yes, there are actually 5 TVs in my house at the moment. all hooked up and watchable. 3 of em in HD smile.gif.

He wants to know if you got it online.

The ONLY reason a Prius would "hold it's value" so to say is because of the demand for one then. The fact remains that hybrids run down faster than other vehicles. I would like to see that car 13 years from now.

My husbands '95 Monte Carlo that we are using right now has 162,000 miles on it and runs like a charm. It needs some minor fix-ups like any car with that much mileage does, but it runs smooth and gets him to and from work (which Mapquest says is 45.42 miles from our home) every day and in some cases like today (every Thursday), twice a day since he has formation. That's 630 miles a week just for work.

Read an article online that said a Jeep CJ or Wrangler is actually one of the "greenest" vehicles available. Not necessarily because of gas mileage, but because of how damn tough, durable, and long-lasting they are.

I want a Wrangler as my "green" vehicle! =D

I never really thought about that before. Makes perfect sense to me. All the parts that are non-green used to make any vehicle (yes, even the Prius) make a brand new vehicle not very green. BUT if a vehicle lasts years and years and years, you actually have yourself a pretty green vehicle because the parts in it lasted.

well the document says that 4 metric tons of sulfur dioxide are produced per 1 ton of nickel produced, and that regulations specify the end result has to be no more than 2kg/metric ton.

the "fact remains prius runs down faster than any other car"

source that please because that "fact" doesnt exist. jessica you talked about having consumer reports stacked up. you should read some of them.

ive already discussed how that "wasteland" mine in canada is a virtually a totally invalid "point" against a prius.

people are actually AFRAID to step away from their old cars! its crazy

this thread was the most happening thing on techsans this past week! WTF

what else was i supposed to do other than give techsans a reason for existing another week

Ok, I honestly tried to find the best picture I could so it would be fair...

Prius

VS.

Civic Hybrid

Now, they both look strikingly similar from the front. It's the hatch back that makes the Prius look different. Combine that with the slopey front and you have a spacey looking vehicle. I would by no means call it "eye catching"... I never even noticed one until we started having this discussion on here (and remember, I lived in Austin for a year and I still live close to there). I knew what they looked like because I like to read up on cars and stuff, but I never really noticed the things. To me, eye catching is something like the Saturn Sky or the Pontiac Solstice that looks so unique AND stylish. Remember, unique isn't always a good thing.

Saturn Sky

Pontiac Solstice

See... it is possible to look unique and modern without people wondering if the car is going to blast off to the moon.

my point is it is possible to be environmentally friendly and economical without driving around in an ugly ass car (my opinion of course). Honda's idea when developing the hybrid was to make it a hybrid but avoid all the design techniques that make it look like a hybrid vehicle.

rile your old bag of bones you big silly. but in general hybrid arguments are always entertaining because the people that really are anti-hybrid/anti-prius are fairly ridiculous people

this thread was the most happening thing on techsans this past week! WTF

what else was i supposed to do other than give techsans a reason for existing another week
exageration

hatch-backs are just more aerodynamic and stronger with less metal.

while giving the car added space. thats a major complaint about the civic hybrid. its actually smaller than a standard civic due to the placement of their batteries

(dont know where this hatchback discussion started from but okay)

It was noted by Jessica. I was just stating why they used a hatchback design on the hybrid and why its ugly.

no i never said that. but for a smaller car its got a lot of cargo space. and dumb people driving huge SUVs are definitely mostly regretting it now. AEB the shear number of them approaching Priuses and asking for trades lol

how much money did you lose buying one of the biggest trucks on the market when you sold it or traded it in. in some states dealerships are putting large SUVs straight to auction and owners are getting shitted on. though i bet Texas is a little better

I know you're not even going to try to say that a large truck doesn't hold good resale value

The Titan is one of the smaller full sized trucks. I don't know where you got biggest, but whatever. I lost nothing. smile.gif And it wouldn't have mattered if I had a full-efficient car or "one of the biggest trucks on the market", I still wanted to save money by not having a monthly car payment and insurance on a new vehicle. With a baby on the way, we had to cut back somewhere and that's where we decided to. Plus, the inconvenience of having to move two vehicles to Georgia added to the idea of selling it. Now, when we get to Georgia, and I start working once the baby is a couple months old then we will purchase again.

Your fashion sense sucks, but neither is mine.

Granted. I do think the Echo is a tad goofy looking, but not "ugly" so much. It wasn't what I went looking to buy (I was looking for a Civic Hybid, actually...) and I should have done a lot more research, but I think I made out rather well considering. It gets good gas mileage (30+ typically, though I averaged nearly 40 on a few tanks last summer), drives great, and hasn't needed any work besides standard maintenance. Plus it's got some dimensional warping or some shit going on, what with an interior that feels about twice as big as it looks from the outside. I don't think I've yet had someone sit in the back seat without commenting on how surprisingly spacious it is.
