yeah in wow you have to get the pretty high level stuff before you start getting to really cool looking equipment. i do like though in wow how you can pretty much tell the approximate level and class just by looking at the person's gear.

A bunch of my WoW buddies were able to get in the pre-release before it was closed, and spent all weekend and today (unhealthy, I know) leveling their toons... they've got a huge hardon for the game, so I figure I'll give it a shot.
If you guys want to join us, I'll be rolling with them on the DeathWhisper FFA PvP server. |

What's the goal in the game? PVP a lot? Raid a lot? Are their instanced dungeons or are they in the open world? Just a few questions I had and couldn't find answers to in the wiki.

I want to assume that PVP will be very heavy in this game. As for requiring guild like raids into dungeons for that 1 in 400000000000000000 chance you'll get what you want loot....I SURE AS HELL HOPE NOT. -------------------- "Ah, y'know it's funny, these people they go to sleep, they think everything's fine, everything's good. from what i read and what my buddy who's playing it says, there will be an emphasis on large format pvp seige battles, often between guilds. in a guild you can go find a resource laden area and build a guild "city" ala star wars galaxies (if any of you played that). the city is attackable but also upgradeable.
he also said yes there will be dungeons and raids, both instanced and non-instanced, normal & epic difficulty, unsure of raid sizes, standard group size is 6 |

If I started up I'd prob roll a necro, my bud says they're really difficult to start with but very powerful at later levels. besides I miss the ol D2 necromancer bringing up tons of skellies to run around and kick ass (the one in this game supposedly can summon up to 10 at a time)

Assassin is pretty hardcore.
Game is a nice mixture of PvP and PvE, which is nice. FFA PvP is amazing as well. Is the game better than WoW? Well, the gameplay is better than WoW. The PvP at early levels is better than WoW... but I can't say for certain if it's better than WoW or not simply because I've not experienced end game... -------------------- ![]() |

It's literally taken me three fucking hours to install and patch the game... and now I've got to download/install Vista SP1 (which I was intentionally avoiding). This game better be fucking rad, because I already have the urge to uninstall this shit. |

Okay... so after about four hours after I started installing, I was finally able to play the game for about an hour and a half or so before I headed to bed.
I was able to get my toon (Ranger) up to level 7 pretty easily during that time. My impression from what I played last night is that this is a 'fun' game, but I don't know if it's more fun than WoW or fun enough to make me switch completely. I'm not completely sold on my Ranger. So far, attacking with the bow is really, really limp. From what I've heard, ranged attacks don't really come into their own until around Level 20, so we'll see how that goes. System-wise, I was able to run the game at max resolution on 'medium' video settings without any appreciable dip in performance. I'll probably fart around on this toon tonight and tomorrow and then spend the weekend rolling around on with a different class. |

Okay, so I played AOC for a good three or four hours last night and got my toon up to level 13...
The game is a lot less fun that it was at first. I don't know if that's because a lot of the quests are just "go here, pick this up, come back, now go here, talk to this guy, come back, now to get this from here, come back, etc." Seriously boring. PvP is alright. I got spawn camped in an instance, which was interesting... I eventually managed to zone out real quick, but surely they'll have to fix that somehow. The weird thing is that, while I am enjoying the game less than I was before, I'm finding that I like my class choice more and more. I've decided I'm going to try and get this toon up to 20 or so by the end of the weekend because I want to see if the game gets any better after Tortage. |

Played it for a few more hours last night - enjoyed it a lot more than the day before.
I suspect that, perhaps, my frustrations from Wednesday night had a lot to do with de-WoWing myself, if that even makes sense. I think I started to enjoy the game more once I kind of got over the fact that, "Hey, this game isn't WoW." And even though I've started to become a little bit burnt out on WoW, it's weird that it has taken me a couple of days to process the idea of playing another MMO that just happens to be completely different in many/most respects. While I haven't encountered this yet, I suspect that the process of rolling an alt or completely re-rolling will become a huge pain in the ass and a major source of griping from AOC subscribers. I'm not sure how familiar you guys are with the game, but every character basically spends the first 20 levels or so in the same place: Tortage. So if you decide at level 32 that you hate your Tempest of Set and want to re-roll as a Conqueror, you're going to have to re-visit the exact same content that you went through with your ToS. You don't have to do this, but the EXP you get from rolling through Tortage is better than it would be for you at that level elsewhere. FFA PvP is nice, and so is the ability to communicate with the player you just killed. I've become so accustomed to WoW that the thought doesn't really cross my mind until my victim has already released. More later with my thoughts on Rangers... |

Okay, so I'm back with my impressions of the Ranger class so far... but before I post that, here's some more basic info on AoC.
If you aren't familiar with the archetypes and classes of AoC, here's a quick primer: Archetypes are listed first, followed by classes. Priest: Priest of Mitra, Tempest of Set, Bear Shaman Soldier: Guardian, Conqueror, Dark Templar Rogue: Barbarian, Ranger, Assassin Mage: Demonologist, Necromancer, Herald of Xotli I don't know much about non-Rogue archetypes, so I'll leave those alone. Barbarians are basically fury warriors without the armor, Assassins are basically dagger rogues from WoW, and Rangers are basically WoW hunters without the pet. All classes, regardless of archetypes, have stealth... but the stealth ability of the Rogue archetype is significantly better/higher (don't know exactly which better describes it) than other archetypes. Also, one's success at stealth is based on whether or not you are in shadows, the time of day, your skill level in stealth, how fast you are moving and what type of armor you are wearing. I'm going to assume most are familiar with the melee combat system. If not, basically NPCs (and PCs) have three "shields" that provide some type of armor bonus. They can be spread out evenly (left, upper, right) around your character, situated all on the same side (all three left), or distributed any other way. Offensively, you have three basic melee attacks available: left, up, right. Generally, you try to attack the direction that has the least amount of shields (one or none). Combos are a big part of the melee system. So, basically, you get a melee/ranged combo and it requires a certain number of directional attacks before the combo is performed. As a Ranger, at least at this point, my best combo is called Salvo. So, to perform this combo, I press the hotbar item associated with Salvo, and then perform an left directional ranged attack followed quickly by an upper directional ranged attack. Once the prerequisite attacks are made, my character automatically performs Salvo. More later, have to work. |

Okay, Rangers...
Rangers have the most hit points and can wear the heaviest armor (medium) of any of the Rogue archetypes. Their primary attack, as you may have guessed already, is ranged melee via either a bow or a crossbow. From what I understand and have read, crossbows generally attack harder but bows generally attack faster. At this point, it's hard to really say with any real certainty. I don't know about endgame, but it seems as if Rangers have pretty decent CC capabilities. They can stun/mesmerize a mob/player by attacking out of stealth, they have a ranged snare ability, can drop root traps and have a feat-trainable AOE fear ability at later levels. I've heard that their DPS drops significantly after 60, but my DPS right now at 16 is pretty good. Honestly, I feel a little OP currently. I have a wealth of CC options and I can pretty much kill any mob +/- two levels using one combo (Salvo). Neat thing about Rangers is that they can zoom in to first-person mode and fire their bow. When in FPS-mode, the Ranger's ranged attack range is increased by some value. I've found that it's generally too much of a PITA to do this for it to be worth it, but may change my mind once I've set-up a macro to zoom in/out and once I'm not able to effectively one-shot mobs. More later. |

I read somewhere that a fuckton of people who played Shadowbane have rolled up characters on AOC and if that's the case....I WILL NEVER TOUCH THAT GAME.
Shadowbane was fun until it turned free and then a bunch of assclowns camped the big player cities and killed you/stole your shit. And I only hear nightmares about FunCom (the administrators of the game). They have apparently fired their support base and your representatives will now be Indian people or Chinese people. Not that it's a huge issue but with such a new game you don't just up and fire your experienced support help when you know there will be bugs/issues/lag/disconnects/malfunctions/etc. That's where Blizzard has this game beat. The fact that Blizzard can provide support to 15million+ subscribers on a daily basis will be a huge make or break for AOC. -------------------- "Ah, y'know it's funny, these people they go to sleep, they think everything's fine, everything's good. They wake up the next day and they're on fire."

Shadowbane was fun until it turned free and then a bunch of assclowns camped the big player cities and killed you/stole your shit. um in a PVP game that is going to happen, deal with it. The fact that Blizzard can provide support to 15million+ subscribers on a daily basis will be a huge make or break for AOC. now is that what you heard or is that fact. cause if you dont have proof of that there is no reason to get bent out of shape. |

I don't know much about their customer service, but I've been less-than-impressed with the way FunCom has handled stuff so far... they dropped a couple of stealth nerfs in the patch yesterday. Don't see why they don't just sack up and spill it in the patch notes, but whatever.
A ton of old-school PvP guilds from way back - DAoC, SB, SWG, etc. - have rolled on the Deathwhisper server. As far as I know, it's the only completely full server. |

um in a PVP game that is going to happen, deal with it. i won't have to deal with it because i won't play the game and yes FunCom "downsized" -------------------- "Ah, y'know it's funny, these people they go to sleep, they think everything's fine, everything's good. They wake up the next day and they're on fire."

aaron you still playin this? Yep. Got my Ranger up to level 32 on Monday. I'm still enjoying the game quite a bit, but decided I'd try another class. Leveling, in my limited experience, is pretty ez-mode, so I'm not too concerned about "wasting time" with alts. (I would have rolled a new toon earlier, but yesterday was the first time since last Friday that they've allowed new characters to be created on my server.) I decided to start a Dark Templar for a couple of reasons. First off, from what I've read, the only Rogue class that's any good from 1-80 is Barbarian, and for whatever reason that class doesn't appeal to me too much. I'm not a big magic guy, so that rules out any of the Priest of Mage classes. I hadn't read a whole lot about any of the Soldier classes, but the Dark Templar's tanking ability, combos and spells seemed pretty cool so I opted to go for that. Long story shorter, I got him to level 15 in about five hours of play last night. It's amazing how easy Tortage (levels 1-20ish) is after you've done it once before. Dark Templars are similar to Shadow Knights in EverQuest in that they have lifetaps and things like that. More later. You should give it a shot dude, I actually think I have a 'give a friend 7-days' or something like that in my retail box. |
