QUOTE LUBBOCK — Texas Tech University's Board of Regents today bucked a statewide trend and voted to freeze tuition for next school year. Student and parking fees, as well as room and board charges, also will not go up for 2008-2009. pretty good press for tech coming from the AP |

they don't need to raise tuition because they raised it so high while you and i were there, the rest of the state is probably just now catching up to the money-grubbing bastards

ut, a&m, and even angelo state outraised us percentage-wise ever since deregulation in 2001.
every year there is a bill to reregulate tuition and it gets voted down with little substantial debate |

Tuition Rereg will be another hot topic again. State Representative Patrick Rose has been talking about it for the last year, he got the tax free weekend for textbooks.
Call your local State Rep and encourage them to make this an issue. |

I still don't understand why they thought deregulation would be beneficial for the students. I remember hearing some douchebag bureaucrat supporting it way-back-when by saying it would make it "cheaper for the student."
Because deregulation sure made cable/phone/airline services cheaper... I understand competition is cool and typically works for most economic matters, but WTF were they thinking for tuition!? -------------------- |

They claimed that tuition competition would turn into "tuition wars" with public schools, when that actually hasn't happened period.
Texas State is raising tuition and fees again. But this is due to Texas State Students voting to push our football team to to D1-FBS, tons of renovations around campus, bringing in some amazing programs and new degree plans. Texas State has a problem with getting alumni support as well. It is starting to come in though. The biggest problem was our switch to the name 'Texas State University'. |

getting a division 1 team for texas state is the stupidest idea I have ever heard. Really.... people just dont come to our school for the athletics. Plus, UT is like right there, and we wouldnt even be in the Big 12. Everyone supports UT around here

sweet. Maybe in the next few years UT will have a realistic shot at dropping 100 points on an opponent

well... lol I will be the biggest Texas State Supporter in the world. We held our own against A&M in 2005 and against Baylor this last year. we will be playing SMU this season. I think it's a brilliant idea. Not only that, but brings more money our way.
And we would be in Conference USA possibly. There's nothing wrong with that. |

Wait, your justification for TSU being in D-1 is they held their own against Baylor? Baylor sucks. If Texas State joins D-1 they'll win 0-2 games a year for the next 10 years -------------------- ![]() ![]() |

for us to have a really bad season this year and we held our own against Baylor is good. They have the recruiting mechanisms that Texas State doesn't have. and it's not TSU. Texas Southern gets pissy when people say that.

my issue is that the argue that this will bring a lot of money to the school since we have no alumni support. i think alumni would rather support a strong d1-aa team than a losing d1-a team
for instance fiu & fau vs. app state. |

We don't get alumni support because of the name change and alumni were getting pissed off by us not moving to D1-FBS, there is no more A or AA. I had to sit in on those freakin committee hearings for it. I heard the Alumni Associations concerns. We are getting more money now from alumni than ever before since the move. One alumni from New Braunfels just donated I don't remember how many millions of dollars just to the athletic program.

yeah I'm sure there was just massive alumni support with untold dollars pouring in when it was called southwest texas.
its honestly a catch-22. alumni support comes from having an athletics program worth watching. athletic programs worth watching don't come along without alumni support. |

We had more money coming in before.
We have a good basketball team and basketball is actually what brings in more money than any other athletic program in any school. We have a great baseball team but their facilities aren't what they ought to be. We have members of our track team going to the Olympics. This stuff just doesn't make the news because of our football division status, which sucks. We had a poor program this year because we were in a transition with a new coach, Coach Bailiff is now at Rice where he took the rest of our coaching staff. Coach Wright had quite a few players leave. Chase Wasson, former QB turned WR after Bradley George came, left for Oklahoma. Bradley played for the Reds' organization before coming to Texas State to play football. Justin Boren, who transferred from SMU, got injured in our game against Kentucky 2 seasons ago, but he was an amazing RG. We had a kid come in that just wasn't up to par as much as Justin is. We had talent, but it all fizzled after Bailiff left. |

basketball is actually what brings in more money than any other athletic program in any school. You've got some pretty good crack there don't ya... basketball brings in nowhere near as much as football. Even in division II. Go here: http://www.ncaa.org/library/research/i_ii_..._d2_rev_exp.pdf Sport: Revenues, Expenses Div I (page 33) Men's programs: Football: $12.9M, $7.1M Basketball: $4.3M, $2.2M Other Sports: $1.0M, $2.6M Unrelated: $400k, $610k Women's programs (pretty much laughable) Basketball: $510k, $1.3M Other Sports: $985k, $3.8M Unrelated: $330k, $345k Div II (page 53) Men's programs: Football: $1.1M, $1.4M Basketball: $750k, $790k Other Sports: $720k, $1.1M Unrelated: $100k, $40k Women's programs (pretty much laughable) Basketball: $340k, $590M Other Sports: $860k, $1.6M Unrelated: $110k, $40k The data is for 2003, but goes back to 1989 and if you look at the trend it shows football taking a larger share every year. |

And I hate to be dogging a Div II team, but I dunno that I'd classify a 9th place finish in the Southland conference "great". Your basketball team has had one season over .500 in the past five years. I highly doubt whatever money came into the school via alumni was because of this amazing basketball performance.

Texas State is not Division II. We're D I - FCS.
Oh, and the only distinction is in football. All other sports we play Big 12 schools at the same level. |

And I'm looking for a link to our budget but can't find it right now. I have it in a binder at home.
This topic is all irrelevant though. I'm glad Texas Tech isn't raising their tuitions. I wish more state schools would follow suit. |

It seems to me ( and i may be wrong) that you do this quite often in threads that you post in. You seem to bring TSU/SA/Politics into everything. Just an observation. /rambling rant |

I just brought up how Texas State was getting our money due to us moving to D1-FBS rather than FCS.
Not sure how I brought politics into this. I just said that I wish more schools would follow suit And it's not TSU, didn't they teach you that with RHA stuff? Its Texas State |

Sorry, it was late when I was reading this. I apologize.
Oh and for another school's reference point, UTSA is raising their tuition and fees like a mother. I think I read in the paper their athletic fees are going up 100%, they are working hard to get a football program, and their tuition is going up 57% to pay for some engineering program. This took a bunch of students by storm because UTSA is largely a commuter campus for people around San Antonio. They do have a decent amount of people from outside of San Antonio, but not really. |

I just graduated from TSU
Try that on for size Honestly, yeah, I call it Texas State, but who gives a damn. TSU are the letters of the school if you want to abbreviate it. If you are tying on a message board, isn't it faster to just type TSU instead of Texas State? I don't really think it's that big of a deal. |
