This is so very very true. People bitch about immigration, but hire illegal Mexicans to clean their house. The best way to get rid of them... don't hire them.
QUOTE It's all to show illegal immigrants that they aren't welcome. And yet, most of the time, lawmakers never stop to think about the fact that they wouldn't even have illegal immigrants in their state in the first place if, somewhere along the line, someone in that state hadn't already welcomed them with a job -- a job that, in many cases, other state residents didn't want to do at any price. http://www.cnn.com/2008/US/03/31/navarrett...nion/index.html Great article. I didn't read the whole thing yet, but so far wow. I don't agree with everything, but he hits the nail on the head with the above quote |

i think thats a fairly obvious point to most people but still, i dont want those kind of jobs!
and people bitch more about immigration then the government. my illegal brother in law pays federal taxes (without ooooh my god youre an illegal lets arrest you! though he isnt getting a refund this year), has a bank account in his name, gets a pay check (not cash under the table), has been pulled over for speeding without having a drivers license or ID and not being able to speak english and just got a fine, even has state approved drivers insurance! do you guys still think the state/federal government cares about stopping illegal immigrants? they must know something that may be totally off topic. i agree the average person bitches about illegal immigrants every 3 seconds -------------------- Little monkeys making money

money is going to the government with having illegals here. immigrants legal or otherwise typically arent hard up for finding work
if the government really wanted to stop illegals theyd be doing a whole lot more is what im saying and im not talking about a huge fuck off fence across texas. maybe in other states its different, maybe in other cities in texas besides houston its even different though -------------------- Little monkeys making money

I don't think people would want to pay the wages for documented citizens. That's just my opinion though.

How about we make the wait time for coming to stay with legal family less than the 3 years it is now. The system is set up to encourage illegal immigration. If we would just make it easier for them to legally come here then we could keep tabs on them and at least know where they are going. Further, if we could spend time helping build a third world country across our border instead of across the world we wouldn't have this problem.
Oh and every american should speak spanish... different topic but come on, there are TWO languages spoken in this hemisphere and we can't manage it. People in europe usually know 3 languages fluently. -------------------- |

I agree with this, though, shouldn't it work both ways? It SHOULD yes. But we are the super power with money to educate. so yes, i ABSOLUTELY think they should learn english, but english is NOT the official language of the United States so we shouldn't only be able to speak it. there is no damn way that i am learning spanish when they wont learn my language. fuck that. Im sure they say the same thing. -------------------- |

I got no reason to learn spanish. Everything I give a shit about is in english. I'll be damned if someone is gonna come over here and demand that a friggin street sign or food label be in spanish. If I went to mexico and started demanding everything be in english so I could understand, I'd get shot.

arent a lot of posted signs in the major cities in mexico in spanish and english? i havent gone to mexico city yet (going this summer!) but from the pictures i've been looking at it looks to be that way.
and "i got no reason to learn spanish" is the same thing mexicans say about english. my parents have asked why my bro in law and some of his friends why they dont speak english and they say "why". working a kitchen job thats 90% other mexicans you dont need to learn spanish. theres no real incentive. an illegal isnt going to move up much in the world by just learning english. as for a legal immigrant why would it be much different? people tend to stick with others of their culture and the mexican one is very close nit. if you work with each other, live with each other, hang out with each other why learn english? -------------------- Little monkeys making money

should is a strong word, but encouraged definitely. language skills are horrible among americans. btw, you forgot about portuguese and french. Actually i intentionally left out french... Forgot portuguese though, my main point, however, is that spanish and english are the most dominant languages on this side of the world. In europe there are so many languages that they actually just use English as a go between langauge it seems. Everyone in the world speaks english, which makes Americans lazy... i just think that if other countrys make 3 languages mandatory for children to learn, we can manage ONE more so that we can have better relations with people we racistly see as lesser than ourselves because they speak another language and are largely poorer. -------------------- |

I don't really care what language they speak/know/etc, but nobody here should be forced or required to learn spanish or use spanish on signs & literature. |

I even said it doesn't bother me if they speak spanish. They don't have to learn english and with your line of thinking "shouldn't be required to". Again, I didn't say they have to learn english. And no they aren't required to. It's up to them to learn it if they want to, but life would be easier on them if they did. |

I've seen many signs in Mexico that are in English. Many private schools teach English at an early age. I know of a few public school systems that teach English there, and quite a bit of the private schools also teach French. If you ever have a chance to meet someone from a University from Mexico, many times they are trilingual.

What are the ESL systems like in Texas or any of the border states? Are there cheap and available programs in Texas to help these immigrants learn English? Learning a new language is pretty hard for anyone. If these programs are not available, it actually pretty hard for people to just "learn English", especially at an older age. Typically it's much easier for them not to learn, especially when they're working with mostly Spanish speakers.

sometimes i may get defensive about english too, but when you think about it... the spanish language was here long before english was. And the native americans before them. Should we all be speaking commanche languages? Should we be grunting at each other like cavemen? They were probably here before the native americans. |

Don't bitch if they don't speak English very well then. So it's now my fault that they don't speak english very well, because I don't pay for them to learn it?!?!? Let me get this straight. Person A is born and raised in Mexico. Person A has never seen or heard a word in any language other than Spanish. Person A decides at the age of 25 to move to the United States, legally or illegally, doesn't really matter since nothing gets enforced. So you actually believe that the people of the United States are now financially obligated to provide Person A with classes to learn the english language?!??!!?!?!??! Please do yourself a favor and move to some other country and take your vote along with you. |

Weren't you just bitching though that you wouldn't want to learn their language and they have to learn yours if they move to this country. Well, if you moved to another country that didn't speak English, would you not want to learn that language?
And I like this country, why don't you tell your significant other to move somewhere else and don't try to boss me around. |

Weren't you just bitching though that you wouldn't want to learn their language I don't want to have to learn Spanish to maintain my living in this country, no. and they have to learn yours if they move to this country. Well, if you moved to another country that didn't speak English, would you not want to learn that language? I would definitely want to learn the most used language if I moved to another country. But I'm not moving to another country. Immigrants from other countries like China don't seem to have this problem as bad as Mexicans. They just STFU and learn english, as they should. And I like this country, why don't you tell your significant other to move somewhere else and don't try to boss me around. I don't have a "significan't other". And don't try bossing me around, by telling me my tax money needs to pay for immigrants to learn english. You completely avoided that question didn't you. Probably because it'd make you look like an idiot if you tried to answer it. |

You don't have to provide the money to set up these ESL programs, but they will make learn English easier and more likely. I'm not saying you can't bitch about people not learning English, you have to acknowledge if there aren't programs teaching it, then it is not so easy.
Now a general rant on education. See, the thing with education is that very often people, students, are blamed for not learning something. Very rarely are teachers actually blamed (I should say punished) for not teaching something. Most people recognize the fact that people learn better when they are taught something. This is why we go to school and are not left to our device to learn stuff. If people are not being taught or taught well, then that makes learning difficult and it lowers the desire to learn as well. This is especially true for the less educated. Immigrants from other countries like China don't seem to have this problem as bad as Mexicans. They just STFU and learn english, as they should. You're looking at different social economic brackets here. Most modern day immigrants from China are either highly educated, or here to receive higher education. You can not function in the colleges of this country without knowing English. Immigrants form Mexico are typically not in this bracket (and yes there are some who come here for higher education, etc, they too learn English). -------------------- I go to the maize and blue

I'm not saying you can't bitch about people not learning English, you have to acknowledge if there aren't programs teaching it, then it is not so easy. I honestly couldn't care less how difficult it is. It's irrelevant. Now a general rant on education. If people are not being taught or taught well, then that makes learning difficult and it lowers the desire to learn as well. This is especially true for the less educated. So if the teachers/systems are to blame, how come some students excel while others don't? You're looking at different social economic brackets here. Most modern day immigrants from China are either highly educated, or here to receive higher education. You can not function in the colleges of this country without knowing English. Immigrants form Mexico are typically not in this bracket (and yes there are some who come here for higher education, etc, they too learn English). That's very stereotypical of you to say. So the nice old chinese immigrant lady who brings me my route 44 dr pepper at sonic is some wealthy person with a higher education? I don't buy your economic excuse. You don't have to be rich or well educated to learn a language. How many poor ass uneducated people out there have you seen that know both English and Spanish? TONS. |

and in my opinion, with no research to back it up, other countries put up signs and such in English because they want the tourism commerce. Not because they are globally actualized.

and in my opinion, with no research to back it up, other countries put up signs and such in English because they want the tourism commerce. Not because they are globally actualized. Yeah, but the tourism isn't from Americans its from all other countries, and everyone learns english so they don't need to learn the language of everywhere they go. I know in Austria they were forced to learn both english and german, with a third language of thier choice also required. -------------------- |

yes, it is important.
When claiming the argument of "well other countries are trying to support English-speaking visitors" as a reason to push justification for America to provide bilingual signage, intent matters to me. From my understanding, accommodating tourists versus accommodating illegal visitors/residents is different. |

impala, i dont know any real life mexican immigrants that "cry because everything isnt in spanish" Sorry I should have been more clear. I didn't literally mean that mexican immigrants were in the streets with tears coming from their eyes. What I should have said was, I'm sick of seeing some jackass who doesn't know english taking up my time in line at various everyday errands like the post office, grocery store, fill out forms for anything, etc, and then actually get mad at the clerk because they don't know spanish. i think you let the FEW highly bloated media stories get into your head. I don't think I've ever seen any media story showing people upset over something not being in spanish, so no. |

few examples:
like 7 years ago, huge outcry from the Hispanic population because they wanted court hearings held in Spanish when I worked at the Lubbock Best Buy, a Hispanic couple came in to buy a camera. Supposedly they didn't speak English so I was sent to that dept (even though i was just a cashier) to help them. They refused to speak to me because I wasn't fluent. One of the camera sales girls came over to me and said "I speak Spanish. I just refuse to speak it to them. I was originally helping them in English, and they are fluent in English. We started chatting it up and when they found out I spoke Spanish, they refused to speak another word of English. I walked away." Fuck that. I walked away too. I even heard them speaking English later. FUCKING RETARDED I have had that happen to me on several occasions. |

Go to a border city then get back to me you are saying Houston doesnt have a lot of illegal immigrants? are you aware how big houston is in comparison to el paso? if illegals stayed in el paso for very long they'd just be stupid. hence why they come to larger cities that are more hospitable to immigrants court cases in which a hispanic immigrant is involved with and doesnt speak english SHOULD be held in spanish. if the person cant understand whats going on then there is no fucking cases against them and its infringing on their rights. did that happen in el paso? i didnt think that place was THAT back asswards AHHHHHH you people are insane -------------------- Little monkeys making money

Translators are required, not a trial in spanish... thats just stupid because all hispanics would have thier own judge, which isn't fair to all english speakers who get randomly chosen judges for thier case. (effects trial preperations and how likely you are to win based on who is the judge) -------------------- |

court cases in which a hispanic immigrant is involved with and doesnt speak english SHOULD be held in spanish. if the person cant understand whats going on then there is no fucking cases against them and its infringing on their rights. In a court case you have a right to legal representation. There is no law stating you must understand your court case. I could be wrong but do not believe there is a law saying the state must provide legal representation which speaks your language. So I don't exactly see what rights are being infringed on. edit: nm, chicken said it |

so a person not knowing whats being said about them, to them, or what papers they are signing in a trial or police interview is okay? is that what you are talking about? i dont see how an attorney could properly work with a client if they didnt speak each others language. if what you say is true id be very surprised
edit: seth said they have to have translators thus they have to be able to understand whats going on -------------------- Little monkeys making money

It is a HUGE violation of rights to convict someone for something without even informing them what it is, or giving them a fair chance to explain their side of the story. Imagine if you didn't speak english, were accussed of murder, you had an alibi. How could you DEFEND yourself if no one even spoke your language? Legal representation may not need to speak spanish, but they MUST have at least a translator to help you understand your court case and have an avenue to speak in our justice system. -------------------- |

St. Mary's has translators? Yup. Every Monday and Wednesday, my mom is there for 8 hours helping out. Its all volunteer work, but she enjoys it a lot. She's made friends with a lot of the Professors there. I thinks he's pushing for me to really apply to St. Mary's because of that. |

I don't mind if people immigrate illegally as long as they are willing to pay taxes, work an honest living and learn our customs and language.
-------------------- A psychotic world we live in. The madmen are in power. How long have we known this? Faced this? And--how many of us do know it? Perhaps if you know you are insane then you are not insane. Or you are becoming sane, finally. Waking up. I suppose only a few are aware of all this. Isolated persons here and there. But the broad masses... what do they think? All these hundreds of thousands in this city, here. Do they imagine that they live in a sane world? Or do they guess, glimpse, the truth...?

You know what's funny... USAA made their employees take a cultural sensitivity class but for Americans and it was geared toward learning the Indian Culture for the vast number of Indians now working for their company.

I thought it was pretty interesting because if you look at who the stakeholders are for USAA, its pretty interesting that they would do that and not insist that Indians working there take "Westernization" type courses.

So why stop at spanish? Why not put chinese, german, french, japanese, (insert other immigrant) translations everywhere? Why not hold our courts in all these languages? Why give preferential treatment to one group of immigrants?
I'll tell you why. Because catering to all is impractical, and catering to one is unfair. English has established itself as the international language (atleast in western countries). It just so happens that our native language is also the international one which means we don't need to learn any other to get by (albeit, if you intend to stay any long length in another country, you probably should learn their language). But for travelers that speak another language, it is really important to learn the international langauge so that they may get around easier, and they really shouldn't expect anything more. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ good...thats the way it should be did I mention I'm insured with USAA How are your rates with them? I'm trying to my family switched over and I'm wondering if it's worth all the trouble. And before you ask, yes, I qualify to join. -------------------- ![]() |

QUOTE How are your rates with them? I'm trying to my family switched over and I'm wondering if it's worth all the trouble. And before you ask, yes, I qualify to join. I wasnt gonna ask. You're a smart dude when it comes to business and stuff. I figured you already knew.Rates are outstanding. I was paying $600 every 6 months for my truck insurance with Geico and a little more when I was with Progressive (albeit, I liked Progressive better and considered switching back to them despite the pay hike...that is until I qualified for USAA). Now, my husband and I, for two people and two vehicles pay $700 every 6 months. Just $100 more than I was paying and now there is another person and another vehicle on there. Plus, their customer service surpasses both Geico and Progressive. They have dedicated reps for the most part. My husband (when he was still single, but we were dating) told the rep that he was thinking about popping the question soon and wanted to know what the rate change would be to add me if we got married soon. The guy explained. Then, a month later when Shane called to add me, the guy told him congrats on getting married, before Shane even mentioned that he was adding his wife. They chatted it up for a bit. The dude was really nice. |

God i wish they would, im sick and tired of smelling cury in the morning and wanting to vomit. Not to mention all the indians like to walk in the middle of the street at all hours of the day. Maybe if my neighbors didn't have a 3 year old that liked to sceam like its getting beat all the time it'd be better, but damn i hate the smell of indian food.... and its everywhere. Oh, and to forum soldier guy, its because spanish is the ONLY other prevalent language on this hemisphere. It makes sense that we speak it here too. I am all for making students learn multiple languages, but i think spanish is the most logical choice for the 2nd language they should learn. -------------------- |

I know where you at! AHAHAHA I do too! That's freakin right there for USAA! And I know what you mean about walking in the damn street. Someone needs to tell them to not just talk and sit at machines while working out. I waited 30 freakin minutes to Hack Squat at the Spectrum off of Prue. Pissing me off! And FORSAKEN, something similar happened to my mom while she was in Maryland. They looked at my mom like shit when she would walk through the hotel lobby with her uniform on, to the point that she felt so uncomfortable that she transferred hotels. |

except when you are a female, and trying to tell them they are late on a payment, and they decide to call you an inferior person, and threaten you. (have had it happen more than one once to a co-worker of ours) again, dont you work bail bonds or something? i wouldnt generalize your interactions with people to an entire race/cultural group. -------------------- Little monkeys making money

"most people this..." "most people that" thats MOSTLY what we hear from you cathryn. and others will agree. -------------------- |

I prefer to stereotype and use ALL. You bastards (jokingly stereotyping right now... don't get pissy) like to stereotype Latinos as we're all having babies at 14, gangbangers, we're all on welfare...

I shouldn't even dignify someone who can't even remember the screen name of the person they're commenting to with a response, but alas, I cannot ignore my benevolent nature to help the hopelessly misinformed. Spanish, though prominent in Texas (which I understand to the untraveled may seem like the whole hemisphere), is not the only "prevalent" language in North America. Believe it or not, French is also widely spoken, in both the United States and in Canada, where it is actually the other official language of Canada. Anyway, now you know, which I hope makes you excited that you are no longer ignorant of this fact. I look forward to you updating your post from saying "hemisphere" to instead "Texas". Have a nice day. -------------------- ![]() |

doesn't prevalant mean majority... and if that's the case then yes. With Central and South America... and the Caribbean, there are more people that speak Spanish.
Oh, and MS-13 will fuck you up. They keep dropping bodies near my house. I saw a car on fire with a body in it |
