I usually partake in early voting so I don't have to deal with the crowds and can do it on my schedule but I decided to see what it was like to vote in the actual primary.

I headed to my precinct's station and there were about 300 Republicans standing there, flat out being told that there is no Caucus for Republicans dry.gif This, as you well know, is a lie. When I walked up to receive my ballot I was asked which side I was voting for, I replied Republican and got two of the nastiest looks I have ever seen, so much for objective volunteers.

Other things I noted, at times, they were asking "Are you Democrat or Republican?" which is the wrong question to ask. I don't know if this was underhanded or just a mistake.

Lastly, I listened to Obama's speech and have to wonder, what does he really believe. He claims that we need to get out of Iraq and need to focus on home but last night he stated, "we can change the world" blink.gif Well, not without taking part in it.

What really bugs me about Obama is how in lots of his ads he talks about "washington needs to be fixed", "we need to fix washington in order to fix America", etc etc. The strange part about him saying that is... well... uh.... Mr. Obama, weren't you part of this washington that needs to be fixed?!?

Notice that he didn't say that he himself is enslaved by corporations. I think his point was that politicians have grown a bit too beholden to the corporations and various other special interests that donate to them, which is true.

The Republican Party of Texas doesn't mention a caucus on their website. As far as I know, Republicans vote in the primary at the voting booth and that's how candidates are chosen.

Hey, Stephan, I'm writing a reaction piece on yesterday's primaries. Mind if I quote you on something here? Mainly the part where you talk about objective volunteers. I highly doubt what I'm writing will be published, and if it is, it will just be a local thing here in San Marcos

In primaries they are to ask you what side you are voting for, this is so they know cross-over ballots.

I heard people being asked "what party are you?", which is fine, except they were using that info to give out ballots. So even if a Republican wanted to vote Democrat they received a Democratic ballot and vice versa.

There are reports of this happening in other polling places.

Let me clarify and elaborate since you interpreted my post verbatim. By saying that "America" is enslaved I mean the government and the decisions that it makes, which directly effect every American citizen, are dictated, influenced, or whatever you want to call it by corporate and other PACs which pour millions of dollars into US Senators, Congressmen, Presidents and other elected officials. Access to the media and other venues is power and in order to gain that venue MONEY is needed. If I give a prospective presidential candidate 10 dollars and a corporation (using various loopholes and many different PACs) donates millions of dollars; where does his/her loyalty rest??? So, indirectly Americans have lost the free choice associated with the democratic process because candidates are beholden to special interests in Washington and there is no way to curb this problem because the corporations and special interests control who is nominated via their dollars. So in a way, Americans are enslaved by corporations due to the ever increasing influence of the almighty dollar which strips Americans of their fundamental rights. In a way, we are indirectly enslaved and beholden to the corporations.

I didn't interpret your post verbatim. I simply asked what you meant.

You didn't explain a damn thing with this entire paragraph. You said you feel you've lost free choice. What free choices have you lost? How are you as a citizen affected by a corporation receiving a tax break? How would you as a citizen be affected if all these "evil" corporations were just immediately slammed by the govt with regulations which bring them to their knees? How about gas prices at $5/gallon? I think you completely misunderstand the importance of large corporations and how important their success is to our capitalist society's economy. What happens when they all start leaving the country for greener pastures?

I explained everything in that "damn" paragraph you just lack the ability to comprehend what you read.

Where did I say anything about a tax break in that paragraph? Corporations do not receive tax breaks for political contributions...

QUOTE

While I advocate more corporate regulation, even though I did not even address that in this post, I do not want to bring the corporations "to their knees".

Wow, try reading my post next time you want to respond. While I do not agree with our economic system, the argument that I am making has nothing to do with destroying corporations or bringing about some massive socialist revolution. All I am saying is that the money that corporations pump into political campaigns is directly effecting the decisions that politicians make instead of the fear of being voted out of office via angry constituents back home.

Again, if you would have actually read my post you would understand that yes votes DO COUNT but they are heavily tilted by the money that corporations pump into candidates. Candidates like Huckabee, Joe Biden and Ron Paul never had a chance because they lacked the big contributions from corporations. True free choice has been eliminated by media spending.

People (all people, not just corporations) tend to not donate to campaigns they don't feel will be successful. And what about Mitt Romny and Rudy Giuliani? They both raised far more money than McCain. You gonna blame their failure on the big corporations too?

So you don't go to the ballot box and choose the candidate you want because of corporations?
NO ONE knows how to break down a quote like Impala. He takes that trophy hands down without a contender.

wait impala, you dont think people have to either be CEO's or have a bunch of corporation backing to make it into politics? is that what your argument boils down to?

corporations are why you see the people you see in mainstream politics. there is no other way to make it that far. id venture to guess that is one of the problems The Fanatic is talking about

No I don't think people have to be CEOs. That notion is just dumb... I don't think I can even think of any politicians who are/were CEOs.

And I dunno where you or fanatic get the idea that corporations are the ones providing all this money. That would be highly illegal if it were true.

Hillary may have won Texas, but she did not win the delegate count. So that made me happy.

I had a pretty good experience. I voted the first day early voting polls were open. Now I had issues at caucusing. I am the only Precinct Chair in my area and I had some older people look at me like I was crazy because I had the packet. We had some extremely overzealous supporters and then we had some people that just wanted to get out. Everyone pretty much left after they signed in and didn't stay for the referendums. But in all, the delegates were split 6-6. Nothing too crazy. Just some angry people. One very angry gay older gentleman was yelling at me and then he screwed up his own precinct convention.

lots of politicians were former business CEO's. if you werent aware of that... well than i dunno. mitt romney for example, cheney for example, bush for example and that was just off the top of my head

so let me get this straight. you dont trust the average american to not be a terrorist but you believe any dude off the street with a passion could be president? your mix of ideologies are blowing me away

what company was Bush the CEO for? And I didn't say there were none, I just said couldn't think of any. Which isn't too surprising considering I don't study bios of politicians all day. Your statement was: "you dont think people have to either be CEO's or have a bunch of corporation backing to make it into politics?" No, people don't have to be CEOs or have a bunch of corporation backing. The three top candidates for president right now were no where near the top of any company. And like I said, it is illegal for corporations to donate money to a political campaign.

I definitely trust the average American to not be a terrorist... not sure where you got that idea from. And yes any dude off the street with a passion could be president. It's simply a matter of votes.

It is illegal for corporations to donate money to a political campaigns but like I said in my earlier post there are loopholes known as Political Action Committees or PACs.

QUOTE
corporations may establish "separate segregated funds," commonly known as political action committees, or PACs. A corporation may solicit its restricted class to contribute up to $5,000 per person per year to its PAC; payroll "check-off" plans for these contributions are widely used. The PAC in turn can contribute up to $5,000 per election (the primary and general elections each count as one election) to a favored candidate. The corporation may solicit each member of its restricted class as often as it likes, and may even (subject to some important restrictions) solicit all its employees twice a year. The corporation may pay the PAC's administrative costs, including legal, accounting, and fund-raising solicitation costs, out of its treasury funds.

Barack Obama
Total Funds Raised: $138,231,595
Total PAC contributions: $25 (yes, twenty-five dollars)

Hillary Clinton
Total Funds Raised: $134,536,488
Total PAC contributions: $1,045,419

John McCain
Total Funds Raised: $53,717,085
Total PAC contributions: $579,424

Yeah, so we can really see where all those loopholes are letting large corporations "buy" a candidate's support. rolleyes.gif

And I failed to see where Bush was a CEO or where that company financed his campaigns.

george had an oil company out in midland that he was the CEO of.

my dad is a pretty die hard 'merican and even he knows that 134,535,488 or any of those dollar amounts werent pure american citizen contributions. $326,485,168????? come on now. when you take into consideration the average amercian earns 20k or so less than you probably earn in a year and DOESNT vote or pay attention to politics.... whos giving that money?! theres also the loophole of "private citizens" who just happen to be billionaires donating money that may or may not be private funds and business funds under the table. just about every politician in the world has gotten in trouble for taking that kind of dough. including several of the political campaigners this year

Impala, you are aware that those are the amounts of money that they disclosed. Some politians have been known to lie in the past. But ok ok, let's assume that these numbers are totally correct. If I am a PAC and I donate 5,000 dollars to your campaign and let's say individuals donated 20 dollars a piece to my campaign... where is my loyalty going to lie? More of my vestted loyaltly lies with the PAC because it donated a larger piece. Individuals have varying demands and ideas when it comes to policy while PACs are advocating a specfic policy goal. Keep in mind that individuals are limited to 2,300 dollars contributions while PACs can donate up to 5,000.

From your source:

Hillary Clinton

Barack Obama

John McCain

And thank you for pointing out that Barack Obama has received virtually NO MONEY from corporations. One of the many reasons that I support him.

More than 300 members of the 109th Congress received campaign contributions from a client of Jack Abramoff while he was their lobbyist—81 Senators and 227 members of the House of Representatives, the Center found. On average, each recipient got about $16,000.

President Bush received nearly $50,000 from Abramoff’s clients. Top congressional recipients included a who’s who of the Republican leadership in Congress. Prominent names include House Speaker Dennis Hastert of Illinois ($68,300 in contributions), House Republican Conference Secretary John Doolittle of California ($56,250) and Montana Sen. Conrad Burns ($52,340). Also on the list is former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay of Texas ($44,000), who once employed convicted Abramoff associates Tony Rudy and Michael Scanlon on Capitol Hill. DeLay’s successor, Rep. John Boehner of Ohio, received $30,500.

Of the $2.3 billion in contracts awarded by the federal government in the weeks since Katrina ravaged the Gulf Coast, at least 15 exceed $100 million; including five that are valued at $500 million or more, according to a New York Times analysis. More than 80 percent of those contracts were awarded with little or no competition.

On October 6, newly installed Federal Emergency Management Agency chief R. David Paulison told a Senate panel that the agency plans to open up several contracts that were previously awarded without competition to competitive bidding, including four contracts worth $100 million each.

Several of the companies that won huge contracts have close ties to Washington lobbyists, as well as lawmakers. They include AshBritt Environmental, based in Pompano Beach, Fla., and Halliburton subsidiary Kellogg, Brown & Root. Baton Rouge, La.-based Shaw Environmental, a subsidiary of the Shaw Group, is the largest local company, with 18,000 employees, to receive Katrina contracts, according to government records

July 01, 2005 | Campaign contributions from the sugar industry were a solid predictor of how senators voted late Thursday on the Central American Free Trade Agreement, which would remove trade barriers in place between the United States and Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua.

The Senate passed the bill, 54-45, despite concerns from sugar farmers, textile makers and labor unions that the agreement would subject them to competition from lower priced Central American imports and eliminate U.S. jobs

he Republicans who voted in favor of CAFTA have received an average of $8,176 from sugar interests, substantially less than the $13,605, on average, collected by the agreement’s Democratic supporters. Jeffords has raised $11,750 from the sugar industry since 1999.

The Democrats who voted against the measure have received an average of $18,531 from the sugar industry, while the dozen GOP lawmakers who opposed it have received an average of $12,135.

Your original statement was that these corporations are basically "buying" candidates. From your own numbers you just posted, not a single candidate has more than 10% of their campaign funds coming from "loopholed corporate donations." How about the other 90%? Not to mention that little old thing they have to do after they've spent all that campaign money... oh yeah... win the election.

Barack Obama does great at getting little $5 and $10 donations from grassroots organization members each. So when you think that these organizations are large, there is a bunch of money right there. African Methodist churches have been requesting their members to donate as well.

just think of it as a good tan. I heard this little old lady say that she was going to vote for the President with the nice tan.

i'll vote based on issues, and if obama best suits what i like, i'll vote for him. i do not approve of black baptist churches donating money to help out a fellow black man get elected. if people vote for hiom because what he stands for, awesome. but doing it based on his damn skin color is whats upsetting me, and i know that black people are really bad about doing such things

So what you're saying is, you aren't voting for him because he's black.

Fucking nigger hatin' honkey.

Of course, he'll be too busy giving speeches. Hillary says so, and she has a liftime of experience in fucking over various factions of the American public.

ive worked at a grass roots nonprofit organization and i know how soooo many of like organizations get shut down every year because they dont get enough money to run or are literally run out of the business of helping people by larger "nonprofit" organizations. they may donate to political causes they believe in but a substantial amount of a campaigners funds coming from them is hard for me to believe.

my mom keeps telling me how if obama is elected black people are going to come into the neighborhood my parents live and kill her because shes white. my moms not really racist despite that INCREDIBLY racist remark. shes just totally insane

You never know, they might ...

It's not uncommon for black people to storm into white neighborhoods and kill white middle-aged women when their bretheren gets elected to the Presidency ....

am i the only one that has looked into going to a pay-for-your-plate campaign dinner? the fee for me would have been $500. other times ive looked into it they were invite or $1k. i am sure they have dinners that are 10k but from what i have experienced they dont seem to ALL be that high

uh, they're not ALL the same. it's whatever the candidate wants to do.

A psychotic world we live in. The madmen are in power. How long have we known this? Faced this? And--how many of us do know it? Perhaps if you know you are insane then you are not insane. Or you are becoming sane, finally. Waking up. I suppose only a few are aware of all this. Isolated persons here and there. But the broad masses... what do they think? All these hundreds of thousands in this city, here. Do they imagine that they live in a sane world? Or do they guess, glimpse, the truth...?
