You know, I watch this, and I begin to experience the reticent, niggling judgmental side that exists in all of us to some degree. And I keep thinking, what the hell Americans. Can somebody please explain to be a reasonable concern that exists with topless women? And I'm even referring to its "effects" on children. I cannot, for the life of me, figure out why seemingly scores of janissary Americans hold that a naked boob somehow merits the same scale of outrage reserved for mass genocide.
Not looking for "welp, that's the way it is" or "yeah, people are stupid >:|" comments or any of that nature. I'm actually rather curious why this is somehow a problem. You can also cite Puritanism, if you like, but I'm talking more modern. I dunno, feels like a country waiting to bloody well grow up. Nice tits, though. ITALIA -------------------- ![]() |

Because protesting is unAmerican, right? No, it's just fucking stupid "RAH RAH RAH! ROAR ROAR ROAR! RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAWRRRR!!!!!!" .... *time goes on* .... ....... nothing happens... Oooooooooooooooooooooook ..... Protests, protesting, is mob mentality at it's finest. It's a bunch of people who probably don't have clue fucking one what is +REALLY+ happening having their emotions dicatated to them by fear-mongering politicians. It's pretty rediculous if you asked me. -------------------- I r Ur Gawd!

I think protesting is a less effective means of accomplishing political goals than other options. If protesters merely contacted their congressmen and representatives instead, I feel they would be far more effective.

The civil rights protests, meaning the million man march and the like, probably did. However, that was also basically the mother of all protests. I was really hoping For Sextits or something! the 386 could have been considered a "RISC" processor back then ... heh .. The motorola chips of the 90's used something like 5 times as much memory to perform the same instructions as the intel chips did .. Definitely true. Now what else? Vietnam War. The protests DID have an affect on this war, regardless of Dogmeat believes. They helped bring to light growing public oppostion to the conflict, something politicians were unknowingly or knowingly blind to. (Same could be said for some of the Anti-Iraq protests) To Dogmeat and Impala: You both see protesting as ineffective. What is the alternative method(s) of political action that you would both suggest? -------------------- |

impala, dogmeat, what zach is trying to say is that protesting done right and effectively is a very good means to show the higher powers they need to rethink something.
zach, what i think impala and dogmeat are trying to say is that protesting done like it is normally done, with a bunch of dumbasses who know nothing about the basis of the protest in question showing up to make a scene and play hacky-sack is by and large completely ineffective like communism, protesting looks really good on paper. put into practice, it's usually only half-assed, at best -------------------- |

QUOTE ('Psykopath') What is the alternative method(s) of political action that you would both suggest? IMHO protesting is less effective than writing in or calling your representatives. The problem is, people want instant personal gratification. They want to be in the limelight so they can say it was specifically them who made the difference. That just doesn't happen in our system of government. Twenty people protesting outside a senator's office isn't going to change his decision about some legislation. If you look at the two successful protesting examples in this thread, they involved millions of people over a pretty good span of time. But IMHO what made those successful isn't the fact that they protested, but the fact that they had very large numbers. |

It's accomplished plenty. See: civil rights as the BIGGEST example (which you seem to off and on ignore). Seriously. I conceded several posts above that events such as the Million Man March got Washington's attention. This is the only example that has been provided hence far. I've stated that I think protesting in and of itself (as I stated exactly above) was largley ineffective and stupid. So again I ask, how does a bunch of idiot college kids and fat bitches with their shirts off griping about shit they've been scared into beleiving solve any kind of political problem? -------------------- I r Ur Gawd!

Fine
A few years back, a bunch of spics held protests at local high schools over the planned border closing. Many were arrested and given truancy tickets for walking out of school. The subsequent protests defending the kids (or, as I like to call them, criminals) who were arrested were so large and disruptive that the county dropped the truancy charges. So yeah, protesting works. Rarely, but sometimes -------------------- ![]() ![]() |

Protesting is a means of action when other avenues (writing, calling your representative for example) have been ignored or pushed aside. It provides a more public display of grievances in order to draw attention to certain issues in the hopes of, yes, more swift action.
Yes, a lot of protesting that goes on is by a bunch of dimwit pot smoking losers that probably consider it a social hangout moreso than supporting whatever cause it is about. Protesting is an institution of a democratic system that I support 100%. Whether it is effective all the time or not, simply being able to protest any injustice is a great freedom that should not be shunned. -------------------- |

Protesting is a means of action when other avenues (writing, calling your representative for example) have been ignored or pushed aside. Totally agreed, but how many protesters out there do you think really wrote their congressman? The problem is someone finds ten other people who think the way they do, and think they're going to make some difference by staging a protest. It's all about the numbers IMHO. They way to truly change something and make a difference is to organize and have enough numbers to either influence your representatives or get the ones you want in office elected (i.e. ACLU, NRA, NAACP, etc) |

I see most protesting as ineffective for most issues. The reason it worked during Vietnam is because you had an entire age group completely against the war because they didn't want to go. I'm not sure the Civil Rights protesting had any positive effects besides MLK's speeches. Instead the rioting and protesting in Detroit and places of the like created more chaos and made the African American population look bad as a whole (IMO). Personally, the silent protests and people who take action have more of an impact than those who loudly protest and proclaim something as wrong. -------------------- "There is a level of cowardice lower than that of the conformist: that of the fashionable non-conformist." |

Los Angeles, 1992. Would you call that a protest, or an act of terrorism? Whatever it was, it got the local judicial system to re-try two of the officers and convict them based on popular beleif ... -------------------- I r Ur Gawd!

But what is a silent protest? Explain this to me. A gathering of people for a common cause that attempt to bring notice to their particular issue by numbers and non-violent civil disobedience. See "sit-ins" as a similar example. -------------------- |

But silent protests can be people taking action quietly, such as those who choose to not carry their groceries in plastic bags, instead bringing their own to the grocery store. They don't tell people they have to or yell at them or hold up signs, they lead by example. People take notice. -------------------- "There is a level of cowardice lower than that of the conformist: that of the fashionable non-conformist." |

Ok, so what has this form of protest accomplished? this keeps the common goal of the protest insight, instead of everyone developing mob mentality and resorting to looting. the second someone starts looting or breaking down the basic laws of society (don't rape, kill, or steal) the protest has lost it's purpose, and will not sway anyone's opinion in the high powers. silent protesting and passive aggressive actions such as sit ins are the basis of success during the civil rights movements -------------------- |

Silent protest: Students in a classroom are opposed to an overly strict absentee policy. They all skip class by standing outside the classroom, with the obvious intent being that they won't return to the classroom unless the policy is changed. Students are opposed to Bush speaking at their campus. They go to the rally wearing, let's say...shirts with the Democratic donkey on them and are quiet as church mice, never once applauding or anything. Little stuff, like that. -------------------- |

Ok, so what was the goal of these silent protests and did they accomplish these goals? 1.) Yes, we got the professor to understand that a severe illness or an unforeseen emergency can cause someone to miss class and that a "zero-tolerance" policy on attendance is a bit too harsh. 2.) Yes, the group accomplishes its goal of showing Bush that not everyone supports him. Goals can be big or they can be small. Doesn't really matter, protesting is a form of political participation. 1.) Yes, we got the professor to understand that a severe illness or an unforeseen emergency can cause someone to miss class and that a "zero-tolerance" policy on attendance is a bit too harsh. So protest is an effective means of change in our country because you and some classmates stood outside like little babies crying about how the professor treats you. Reminds me of some little toddler who misbehaves until mommy buys him the toy he wants. My guess is your professor caved bc he didnt feel like dealing with it and wanted yall to quit actin like little kids and get the hell in the classroom. That's not making change, it's throwing a tantrum so you can get what you want. 2.) Yes, the group accomplishes its goal of showing Bush that not everyone supports him. Goals can be big or they can be small. Doesn't really matter, protesting is a form of political participation. Show someone you don't support them by going and listening to them speak and *gasp* not cheering. Damn that is genius! I'm sure Bush was terribly distraught and practically ready to throw in the towel on his career as a politician after that! |

Never said it was me or that it was real. But hey, assumptions rock for you, that's cool. And hey, like I said: protests come in all shapes and sizes. The hypothetical (guess I should have stated this in the beginning, but I thought it was assumed...oh well) goal was accomplished: show that not everyone agrees with the president. Hell, hundreds of thousands marched against shrub's war, and he still didn't care. Meh, I tire of this. You and Aaron feel protesting is not effective. That's fine, your opinion. It obviously has been, and will be again should the circumstances call for it. I'm just glad I live in a country were protesting, for better or worse, is allowed. -------------------- |

The "we" was an in general statement. Never said it was me or that it was real. But hey, assumptions rock for you, that's cool. Mmmk... "Hey guys, we went to the ball game." Oh, but I didn't really go, I just made that up, you're a dumbass for assuming I was really talking about me and an experience I had. And hey, like I said: protests come in all shapes and sizes. The hypothetical (guess I should have stated this in the beginning, but I thought it was assumed...oh well) goal was accomplished: show that not everyone agrees with the president. Your hypothetical protest didn't accomplish anything. Unless you think there are people stupid enough to have the notion that "everyone agrees with the president". And even if there were people stupid enough to believe that, someone going to the president's speech with a democrat shirt on won't change anything. Meh, I tire of this. You and Aaron feel protesting is not effective. That's fine, your opinion. It obviously has been, and will be again should the circumstances call for it. I'm just glad I live in a country were protesting, for better or worse, is allowed. We've had two examples of successful protesting, and in those cases I'd call it more of a movement as per the number of people involved. The protesting Aaron and I are talking about are the other 99% of protests that occur. Some dipshits picketing outside abortion clinics harassing people as they go in, people taking off work to camp out at Bush's house because they're against the war. They're fruitless wastes of time and money. There's too many people out there nowadays who do nothing but speak out against something they don't like, rather than speak out for something. I suppose its easiest for a weak mind to be against something rather than for the opposite thing. |

I don't really see where silent protest does much either... Unless it's already a very controversial issue with other things going on as well. With the example of MLK JR., there were other things going on at that time that contributed to his success.
In your example, Zach, students protesting like that would just piss administration off. When young people do things like that, it just looks ignorant. Be at class. It's not hard. *shrug* thats my thoughts. |

At least Psykopath will either agree to disagree or tell you he's tired of the topic. Shows your level of intelligence IMHO. |

How dare you, a white male ages 18-35, use the word NIGGER! I take offense to this word! I hereby proclaim that you must never use this word again and must now refer to those you once would refer to as "Nigger" as "Proud, Strong Black Man". REPENT! JESUS WILL WARM YOUR PLANET IF YOU DONT!!!! "OK OK OK I'm sorry, will you hand me the oar, N-word Jim?" diarrhea pocket fruit good cake awesome, fruitcake piece of crap |
