I love Gates' statement about the power of his applications over Open Source tools. So much to say, so few words all while some of the largest sites on the internet rely on Open Source. Cue Impala's rant...

So the owner of a company tauts his products. Someone call the news media.

And you left out the second part: "But Gates said giving away Microsoft software isn't intended to turn students against open source software entirely. Rather, he hopes it will just add one more tool to their belt."

Not to mention that how "powerful" a development tool is is completely subjective. Neither you nor Bill can really make any claims to which is more "powerful" (whatever the hell that is supposed to mean anyways).

True. But I think that there's more to be said than simply "our products are better."

That's my point.

You guys are acting like Bill Gates just invented some new marketing scheme and should be shot for it.

find me somewhere this doesn't happen.

I see this stupid ass DirecTV commercial like every day:

"You have 30 seconds to listen to what your cable provider doesn't want you to know! They say they're keeping up with HD capacity, they're not!"

OOOOOH SNAP YOU GOT ME THERE! LEMME SWITCH RIGHT NOW! wacko.gif

I just find it somewhat ironic. He's giving away his product because he wants more students to use it. I see this as he knows that one of the reasons Open Source works is because it's free (as in beer) and people will use the tools they have. On that front, good for him.

However, I think claiming something that really isn't claimable (by either side), is a little much and will probably push away a good number of people who like Open Source technologies (hax0rs).

You mean, push away the people who already hate Microsoft and won't use their products anyways?

I'm arguing that there is a contingent of CS students who would use these Microsoft products but are proud of being "hackers" and that statement makes them a little weary.

I worked with two guys from A&M for a while and they were die-hard Open Source programmers. I programmed using both VS.NET and Python and started showing them some different things, eventually they started using VS.NET as well and now they're aren't so gung-ho about everything having to be Open Source. There are ways to win hearts and minds, claiming something that isn't possible isn't one of them.

Chill man. You're reading way too much into what I just said.

I wasn't trying to imply that this was some diabolical plot by Microsoft. From what I've used of MS's development tools, I think they're pretty well designed and I applaud Bill for giving them away for free.

I was just attempting to reinforce what Hartmann was saying. It's going to take a lot more than just "our tools are more powerful" to win over people's hearts and minds. And this is definitely a step in the right direction.

It was just funny to me that he/yall would expect something out of Gates & Microsoft that no corporation out there does.
