So, I've been wanting to get one for a while.....was looking at Best Buy's ad, and they have a 250 GB portable for $139 or a 320 GB regular one for $129. They're both by Western Digital....are they any good of a brand?
I kinda prefer the portable one, because I dont need THAT much memory, and my Macbook has 160 GB. I just wanted one for occassional backup purposes. Also, any other good specials? EDIT: and just to piss off Impala....I want a GAY ONE!! Something in pretty colors!! |

That's a good brand, I have a Seagate and I've had no problems with it. Been using it for like 4-5 years. Just use it to store media.

Western Digital is generally a good, solid brand. Seagate, like TTULow mentioned, is also good. I've had good luck with Maxtor in the past, but I don't know how they fare now.

I'm checking out Fry's right now...I just hate to have to drive across town to go there. If you have Leopard, just spend the money and get the Time Capsule thing from Apple. You can use it as a mixed "selective" backup and a complete backup solution. What I mean by that is, you can have your repository of photos on it while backing up your machine's state. It can also power iTunes from the network. $300 = 500GB and it's a wireless router / print server. -------------------- "There is a level of cowardice lower than that of the conformist: that of the fashionable non-conformist." |

But that's the thing...I already have an Airport Extreme.
So I would have to go and sell that and try to get $150 for it, and then pay the other half for the 500 GB HD feature of the Time Capsule? And when is TC coming out anyway? |

And when is TC coming out anyway? As far as I know it's in stores today. And remember, you can back up your iPhone to this thing as well (wirelessly). -------------------- "There is a level of cowardice lower than that of the conformist: that of the fashionable non-conformist." |

Oh, if you have a Airport Extreme (one of the newer ones), you can plug in an external drive to it and get basic backup functions readily.

WD is a good brand. Same with Seagate. I have had success with Maxtor as well, but it's loud!

Maxtor got bought by Seagate, if I recall.
And for the record, I hate WD's, I've had a lot of DOA drives from them, and I even got DOA drives as REPLACEMENTS for other RMA'd DOA drives. (WTF?) That being said, I do believe that my desktop has all WD drives. I used to be a Maxtor man, though, and still prefer Maxtor drives. Most of my drives are hand-me-downs or surreptitiously acquired now anywhos. -------------------- WAIT. I'm not finished.

i just bought the Samsung 500GB drive, which has awesome reviews and is only $100 and converted it into an external drive. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16822152052 -------------------- ![]() |

I bought a Maxtor....Best Buy had it marked at $132, but when I went to check out it was only $114. I was quite happy. I am liking it so far! I have it plugged into my Airport Extreme and am using it for wireless backups through Time Machine.

they usually don't cost all that much more than the non networked versions, and totally worth it IMHO. the WD 1TB drive I got was $50 more ($400 instead of $350).

Now, what's the difference? Like does it have an ethernet port in it or something?

Yeah, it will essentially make the drive seen as a computer on your network. You'd just plug it right into your router.

Yeah, it will essentially make the drive seen as a computer on your network. You'd just plug it right into your router. That's kind of what he's doing, the interface is just USB vs. network cable. The Airport Extreme has a USB port and allows you attach an external hard drive that can be seen on the network. -------------------- "There is a level of cowardice lower than that of the conformist: that of the fashionable non-conformist." |

That's kind of what he's doing, the interface is just USB vs. network cable. The Airport Extreme has a USB port and allows you attach an external hard drive that can be seen on the network. If you buy the WD one that has Gigabit ethernet, you'll get better transfer rates than using USB. -------------------- Holy shit, pebkac, you're awesome!
