Sad for the kids for sure, but I'm glad to see we're finally weening these unemployed bums off the government tit they've been sucking on for two years now. |

I do agree it's bad for the children, but the parents have to take some responsibility for their household (whether or not they are deemed the head). The problem is, there is no motivation for the parents. They've been getting by just fine with the government's help, why stop now? -------------------- "There is a level of cowardice lower than that of the conformist: that of the fashionable non-conformist." |

Is it sad that I see this:
QUOTE Social workers and HUD housing inspectors also are finding families who have been living in cramped quarters. In one example, Priscilla Mercadel, her daughter and her seven grandchildren were packed in a one-bedroom apartment in north Houston after FEMA disqualified the daughter from rental assistance. and think "mandatory sterilization"? Don't have so many fucking kids! -------------------- |

Moral of story: if you're a part time cashier, don't have 7 kids. I'm so going to hell. It's actually an interesting correlation. Less than middle class citizens working part time jobs having more than four children. It almost seems like they have too much time on their hands or something. -------------------- "There is a level of cowardice lower than that of the conformist: that of the fashionable non-conformist." |

Well I imagine they're connected by lower education. Less educated folks are more likely to have lower-paying jobs and have more kids. Not sure if the "more kids" thing is due to a lack of knowledge about birth control, less money to pay for it, or lacking understanding of how many kids they can afford to raise.
I'm not big on government handouts and state-run programs in general, but I would 100% support free condoms and free/cheap birth control pills for all. We'd have to get rid of the "abstinence-only education" mentality first, but I think free birth control could make a huge difference in poverty pregnancy rates, welfare/WIC/Medicaid dependence, etc. This post has been edited by Spectatrix: Dec 20 2007, 01:56 PM -------------------- |

Explain, Mr. Economist? How are they NOT different? Explain that to me instead. What the fuck do people without jobs do? Sit on a fucking government-bought couch playing a government-bought playstation on a government-bought TV while smoking dope. Even if you aren't on drugs, why do people who are couch-potato lazy not have jobs, and if they do, they are couch-potato lazy at work too. Just because you 'have a job' does not mean you work. There's a difference between having a job, work, and showing up to collect a paycheck. Just because you show up to collect a paycheck does NOT mean you actually work. Far and away, the people who just show up to collect a paycheck are assuredly couch potato lazy. They don't wanna do a god damned thing at work or otherwise. -------------------- I r Ur Gawd!

How are they NOT different? Explain that to me instead. Cyclical unemployment, frictional unemployment, structural unemployment....things like. Now I just re-read what Spec said, and so to be perfectly clear: are you commenting and just laziness in general or on unemployment type issues? why arent birth control pills OTC
thats what i was thinking about the other day. there are side affects and you are supposed to get pap smears and all the jazz before getting a prescription but it seems pointless and there are really bad side affects and certain health risks to taking aspirin (which is OTC) once again people characterizing the poor based on a news information concerning a very specific/small group -------------------- Little monkeys making money

QUOTE The majority of transplanted Katrina evacuees in Harris County, an estimated 100,000, are not on federal housing assistance and have moved on with their lives, but there is a small minority of people who still are struggling, community activists say. but yes i agree after 2 years these people should have done something, i agree with welfare and government benefits but believe the system should be run differently with more of an emphasis on life skill teaching and job training -------------------- Little monkeys making money

why arent birth control pills OTC they are by prescription because certain people have to take certain kinds. I had to be on a low estrogen pill because I would vomit all night with the regular Ortho Tricyclin Lo (sp) stuff...so they put me on something called Allese (sp)thats what i was thinking about the other day. there are side affects and you are supposed to get pap smears and all the jazz before getting a prescription but it seems pointless and there are really bad side affects and certain health risks to taking aspirin (which is OTC) once again people characterizing the poor based on a news information concerning a very specific/small group Also your skin type has a lot to do with what kind of BC pill you are on |

why arent birth control pills OTC thats what i was thinking about the other day. there are side affects and you are supposed to get pap smears and all the jazz before getting a prescription but it seems pointless and there are really bad side affects and certain health risks to taking aspirin (which is OTC) Pap smears don't have anything to do with whether you can take birth control pills, actually. They require them just as a way to give you an annual one, to check for cervical cancer. they are by prescription because certain people have to take certain kinds. I had to be on a low estrogen pill because I would vomit all night with the regular Ortho Tricyclin Lo (sp) stuff...so they put me on something called Allese (sp) Also your skin type has a lot to do with what kind of BC pill you are on Dunno about skin type, but yeah, stuff in your medical profile can definitely determine what pill you need to be on. Most people aren't informed enough to figure out the details on their own. I, for instance, can't be on combined hormone pills because it spikes my blood pressure like mad (I'm already on pills for hypertension, but I didn't want to up my dose). Instead, I tried progestin-only pills, which worked like a charm, but aren't for everyone because they're more time-sensitive than pills with estrogen. Now I'm on a progestin-only subdermal implant which is awesome because I don't have to remember pills and it lasts for three years. -------------------- |

We could always slit their throats and turn them into meat pies to feed to those who are homeless/jobless for actual real reasons? (Yes, I saw Sweeney Todd yesterday)

I don't think sex accelerates those conditions, but I could be wrong. I just know I had a doc (at TTU) tell me that they really just bribe women with BC pills in order to get them the annual pap smears, but they're not actually needed. Student health center at UNM didn't require paps for BC prescriptions at all.
