Curious if anyone on here has bought into either format. I got weak a while back and got a Blu-ray standalone player to go with my HD-DVD standalone. Seems like the format "war" is kind of at a stalemate for the time being. After having both for a while, I have to admit they both look equally amazing. I guess it's just up to which studios support which format exclusively in the end.

I think that Blu-Ray is the superior format, but Sony is kind of dickish, so I'm up in the air on which I want to win.
Maybe a magical 3rd format will stomp both of them and rid us of this ridiculous format war. -------------------- |

So I just realized the poll is pretty much retarded as far as the choices, but oh well my bad.
The studios choose which format to press out media in, and if memory serves it's something like this: Blu-ray exclusive: Disney Fox MGM Sony HD-DVD exclusive: Dreamworks Paramount Universal Both: Warner Obviously there's a bunch of smaller studios but these are the major ones. Warner is kinda the linchpin. If they went exclusive to either side that would probably be the side that wins out. As far as the format itself, after a ton of research, watching lots of movies on both formats, etc, they're essentially identical. The only real difference is the disc capacities, which end up being a moot point. Blu-ray has capacities of 25GB & 50GB, where HD-DVD has 15GB, 30GB, and 51GB. They both show the same VC-1 or MPEG4 encoded 1920x1080x60Hz video, and both support the latest surround audio formats like Dolby TrueHD & DTS-HD. In the end I'd say the HD-DVD format might have a slight edge as far as all players since the start were required to have ethernet ports. Not to mention the format's spec was finalized from day 1, whereas Blu-ray has had a couple of versions so far. If you have the spare cash to jump into either format, it is friggin amazing, seriously. Most of the players still have deals where you can grab several free movies with purchase. |

I'm thinking of getting a PS3 just because it is one of the cheapest ways to get a blue ray player. Plus I'll get to play NCAA08 too. And I want to take advantage of that offer to get 5 free movies even though the selection sucks. I'm just hoping blu ray discs don't become defunct like sony's umd movies.

The PS3 is actually considered by most of the high end AV peeps to be one of the best Blu-ray players available. It is also the cheapest player. It's just that a lot of people don't want a PS3/game system in their setup, or don't like the fact that the damn thing doesn't come with a remote, or IR remote functionality (the remote you can buy separately is a proprietary bluetooth remote).
The best standalone so far is the one I picked up, the Panasonic DMP-BD30K. I've played a bunch of different movies on it so far with zero problems. Stay away from the Samsung Blu-ray players, they've had major issues. |

I don't have one and don't plan on getting one either. The difference between HD-DVD/Blu-Ray and regular DVD is so minute that I couldn't give a shit about either format. I won't be buying one until HD-DVD wins out and all the players cost less than $150. If Blu-Ray wins I'll never be buying one and you wouldn't be able to give me one for free.

The difference between HD-DVD/Blu-Ray and regular DVD is so minute Of course you're entitled to your opinion, but I'm guessing you've never really seen a good comparison (most in-store setups are terrible). The difference is staggering on most movies (even old movies). 1920x1080x60Hz vs 720x480x30Hz is a pretty big difference even just on paper. |

I know blu-ray is supposed to be infinitely better, but
1) its way more expensive 2) the players arent all that great 3) who is really gonna notice on the tv sizes we have now. |

Well blu-ray & hd-dvd are equal as far as picture/audio quality. They hold exactly the same format video & audio, they just store that video differently on the disc.

someone told me blu-ray could hold more info. i guess they are wrong? Blu-ray comes in 25GB & 50GB, HD-DVD comes in 15GB, 30GB, & 51GB (fairly new). The only real difference physically is that HD-DVDs can do a combo format, and have the standard DVD on the other side of the disc, whereas Blu-ray cannot. As far as those sizes, it just depends on the length of the movie, sound tracks, and amount of extra features which size they use. The video & audio bit-rate will be exactly the same though. All HD-DVD & Blu-rays use VC-1, MPEG2, or AVC for video encoding. |

I'm just hoping blu ray discs don't become defunct like sony's umd movies. NO SHIT I checked their "catalog" and it was maybe 100 movies total, 96 of which were shitty teen comedies released in the last 5 years. I happen to like watching movies on the PSP. Better picture quality than my TV (not much of an accomplishment) and better sound quality (again, not much of an accomplishment). Still good for roadtrips though -------------------- ![]() ![]() |

That Onkyo player he mentioned has been scrapped, but a pretty good article.
This was virtually the same format war that happened for DVD. It was Sony/Philips "MultiMedia Compact Disc" vs Toshiba's "Super Density disc", and it was Toshiba's SD disc which won out and became DVD. |

Warner Brothers will go Blu-ray exclusive in May 2008.
http://www.reuters.com/article/ousiv/idUSN0432340820080104 QUOTE Fri Jan 4, 2008 4:04pm EST NEW YORK/LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Time Warner Inc's (TWX.N: Quote, Profile, Research) Warner Bros studio on Friday said it would exclusively release high-definition DVDs in Sony Corp's (6758.T: Quote, Profile, Research) Blu-ray format, dealing a big blow to Toshiba Corp's (6502.T: Quote, Profile, Research) rival HD DVD technology. Warner Bros, Hollywood's biggest seller of DVDs, representing about 18 to 20 percent of sales in the United States, was one of the few studios that backed both formats. All sides of the format war had agreed it was confusing to consumers and a stumbling block for a potential multibillion-dollar industry. Total DVD unit sales fell 4.5 percent in 2007, the first major year-over-year decline since the disc format debuted in 1997, according to Adams Media Research. Sales fell 4.8 percent to $15.7 billion. "The window of opportunity for high-definition DVD could be missed if format confusion continues to linger. We believe that exclusively distributing in Blu-ray will further the potential for mass market success and ultimately benefit retailers, producers, and most importantly, consumers," Warner Bros Chairman and Chief Executive Barry Meyer said in a statement. News Corp's (NWSa.N: Quote, Profile, Research) 20th Century Fox, Walt Disney Co (DIS.N: Quote, Profile, Research), and Lionsgate (LGF.N: Quote, Profile, Research) are among studios backing the Blu-ray format. Viacom Inc's (VIAb.N: Quote, Profile, Research) Paramount studios and General Electric's (GE.N: Quote, Profile, Research) NBC Universal release movies in HD DVD format. Warner said it would continue releasing in the HD DVD format until the end of May, although those releases would follow the standard DVD and Blu-ray releases. So if you want high-def DVDs, Blu-ray is probably your safe bet as no doubt this will be the nail in the coffin for HD-DVD. |

Paramount/Dreamworks and Universal are the only two studios left exclusively supporting HD-DVD. It's a huge hit and I doubt HD-DVD will recover. I'd rather see HD-DVD win out, but oh well.

And now its being reported that Paramount/Dreamworks will be following suit. As much as I hate to say it, Blu-ray has won this deal. If you were on the fence about getting HD-DVD or Blu-ray, the choice is clear now.

Yeah so did Warner a couple days before their switch.
Warner released a statement today mentioning why they switched: They're claiming recession and blah blah blah. My guess is the $500 million bribe (from the Blu-ray camp) rumor is true. http://www.reuters.com/article/industryNew...742944620080109 On another note: Digital Playground (leading HD-DVD pr0n producer) has dropped HD-DVD and gone Blu-ray exclusive as well. http://www.engadgethd.com/2008/01/08/ps3-o...p-to-the-plate/ |

Apparently, microsoft is also considering dropping the HD-DVD add on in favor of a Blu-Ray add on if that's the "consumer choice."

Yeah I read somethin yesterday that mentioned they would build a blu-ray addon for xbox 360 if indeed blu-ray won out.
Also looks like more rumors flyin but supposedly credible sources, sayin that both Paramount and Universal (last two HD-DVD exclusive studios) will make the switch in February due to contract stipulations expiring which will allow them to. http://www.engadgethd.com/2008/01/09/sourc...both-going-blu/ Anyhow yeah, this one is pretty much over. I got the top of the line stand alone players of both formats, kinda glad I got a mega deal on the HD-DVD one (was a display model w/o box that I got at less than half the retail price at the time) |

It is an offer from Sony, it should have printed a rebate & instructions with your receipt.
And yeah I have about 10-15 of each and have seen no difference in picture or sound quality. Definitely a difference from SD-DVD though. |

Well just like DVDs, they'll go down in price. I've gotten plenty in BOGO deals and for less than $20. I've only got about 100 DVDs, and only rebought a couple of my favorites in Blu-Ray or HD-DVD. Although if I purchase a new movie, it's definitely HD-DVD or Blu-ray. |

I probably have about 300 RETAIL DVDs. I'm not even through getting the DVD versions of some of my favorite movies that I have on VHS. And some of them haven't even been released on DVD. An example is my favorite version of the Godfather Trilogy: So for now I'm just gonna keep watching my DVDs and I'll fuck with BluRay later. I did hear that they were dropping the PS3 price to 299 soon so I might cop one. -------------------- Fuckmuffin. That word and muffintop are the two coolest things I've ever seen on this place. Its free for up to 50 DVDs, then a one time fee to purchase the software. I like it because it has all the info you could ever want about the DVD, the ability to enter them by barcode, and its ability to customize and export all the data to XML or various other data files.

Pretty interesting engadget article on the sales numbers after the warner announcement:
QUOTE Some were very quick to crown Blu-ray the winner when we learned that the Blu-ray player owned 93 percent of the HD movie market the week after Warner went Blu. Evidently the numbers were leaked and the NPD group was quick to respond in an attempt to clear things up. As expected, some we're just as quick to discount the Blu-ray success -- which is just as silly as saying the numbers alone mean Blu-ray has won. Two things happened that week that we're not so sure could continue forever; HD DVD sales were down, and Blu-ray sales were up. With some help from a a few promotions (free player with a new TV) -- stand-alone Blu-ray player sales were up 30 percent (22k, up from 15k) -- but this alone wasn't enough to shift HD DVD share from 40 percent down to 7. HD DVD only sold 1,758 stand-alone players during the same week, compared to 14,558 the week before. So while Blu-ray was up 30, HD DVD was down 88 percent. So it isn't that the Blu-ray sales were all that spectacular, but instead it was that HD DVD sales were way down. At this point it doesn't mean anything, but if it continues for more than a month then that's whole another story entirely.

Looks like HD-DVD is coming back in sales, but another big announcement that will hurt:
http://www.engadgethd.com/2008/02/11/netfl...an-hd-dvd-soon/ QUOTE In what can only be classified as yet another crushing blow to the embattled HD DVD camp, rent-by-mail giant Netflix has just announced its intention to only stock Blu-ray titles in the future. Netflix justified its decision by pointing out the fact that most Hollywood studios seem to be converging solely around the Sony-backed format -- a fact that's all too familiar to Toshiba and friends. With both Blockbuster and now the 'Flix having eschewed HD DVD for BD, it's gonna get harder and harder to even find a place to rent those former discs in the first place, let alone one that has a decent selection.

Your guess is as good as mine... if HD-DVD drops completely then more manufacturers may start cranking out their own Blu-ray players and drive the cost down. Right now all I'm aware of is Sony, Panasonic, and Samsung.

Michael Bay keeps reminding us he's a few fries short of a happy meal:
http://www.engadgethd.com/2008/02/14/micha...-hd-format-war/ QUOTE Finally, Michael Bay has stepped down from Cheese Mountain to pontificate on the finer points of the HD DVD vs. Blu-ray war. Speaking from the inner-sanctum of his lair -- located equidistant from the Church of Scientology and a gigantic cotton candy stand -- Mr. Bay reminds us that, "Blu-ray's better, and I told everyone," then goes on to further prop himself by adding, "I was very vocal about it. I knew HD [DVD] was not going to make it." We're glad that Bay can sleep at night, safe in the knowledge that the mere "quality" of the formats decided the winner of this battle, rather than massive business partnerships fueled by the desire for marketshare. He wrapped up his message (actually given at an awards ceremony held by the Visual Effects Society) by saying, "Am I thrilled? It really wasn't my fight, but remember what I said in the press? I was kind of saying HD [DVD]'s going to lose... No one believed me." He then slammed a trophy he was receiving to the floor, pointed to the packed room, and yelled, "In your face, HD DVD!" How this man made such an entertaining movie in Transformers is beyond belief |

Toshiba to drop HD DVD, sources say http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/conten...7d0bfb0c25aa58d
QUOTE Toshiba is widely expected to pull the plug on its HD DVD format sometime in the coming weeks, reliable industry sources say, after a rash of retail defections that followed Warner Home Video's announcement in early January that it would support only the rival Blu-ray Disc format after May. Officially, no decision has been made, insists Jodi Sally, vp of marketing for Toshiba America Consumer Products. "Based on its technological advancements, we continue to believe HD DVD is the best format for consumers, given the value and consistent quality inherent in our player offerings," she said. But she hinted that something's in the air. "Given the market developments in the past month," she said, "Toshiba will continue to study the market impact and the value proposition for consumers, particularly in light of our recent price reductions on all HD DVD players." That last part is pretty convincing... |

They're not going to rebound. I'd imagine if you already have a player and want cheap discs, there will be plenty available over the next several weeks. I'm tryin to decide if/when I'd jump on some $5-10 HD-DVDs.

Toshiba finally throws in their gloves....
http://money.cnn.com/2008/02/19/technology...sion=2008021904 QUOTE Toshiba quits HD DVD business
Decision hands victory in DVD format battle to Sony-backed Blu-ray technology. February 19 2008: 4:36 AM EST TOKYO (AP) -- Toshiba said Tuesday it will no longer develop, make or market HD DVD players and recorders, handing a victory to rival Blu-ray disc technology in the format battle for next-generation video. "We concluded that a swift decision would be best," Toshiba President Atsutoshi Nishida told reporters at his company's Tokyo offices. The move would make Blu-ray - backed by Sony Corp (SNE)., Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., which makes Panasonic brand products, and five major Hollywood movie studios - the winner in the battle over high-definition DVD formatting that began several years ago. Nishida said last month's decision by Warner Bros. Entertainment to release movie discs only in the Blu-ray format made the move inevitable. "That had tremendous impact," he said. "If we had continued, that would have created problems for consumers, and we simply had no chance to win." Warner joined Sony Pictures, Walt Disney Co (DIS, Fortune 500). and News Corp.'s (NWS, Fortune 500) Twentieth Century Fox in that move. Nishida said his company had confidence in HD DVD as a technology and tried to assure the estimated 1 million people, including some 600,000 people in North America, who already bought HD DVD machines by promising that Toshiba will continue to provide product support for the technology. Both HD DVD and Blu-ray deliver crisp, clear high-definition pictures and sound, which are more detailed and vivid than existing video technology. They are incompatible with each other, and neither plays on older DVD players. But both formats play on high-definition TVs. HD DVD was touted as being cheaper because it was more similar to previous video technology, while Blu-ray boasted bigger recording capacity. Only one video format has been expected to emerge as the victor, much like VHS trumped Sony's Betamax in the video format battle of the 1980s. Nishida said it was still uncertain what will happen with the Hollywood studios that signed to produce HD DVD movies, including Universal Studios, Paramount Pictures and DreamWorks Animation (DWA). Toshiba's pulling the plug on the technology is expected to reduce the number of new high-definition movies that people will be able to watch on HD DVD machines. Toshiba Corp. said shipments of HD DVD machines to retailers will be reduced and will stop by end of March. Sales in Blu-ray gadgets are now likely to pick up as consumers had held off in investing in the latest recorders and players because they didn't know which format would emerge dominant. Despite being a possible blow to Toshiba's pride, the exit will probably lessen the potential damage in losses in HD DVD operations. Goldman Sachs has said pulling out would improve Toshiba's profitability between $370 million to $460 million a year. The reasons behind Blu-ray's triumph over HD DVD are complex, as marketing, management maneuvers and other factors are believed to have played into the shift to Blu-ray's favor that became more decisive during the critical holiday shopping season. Once the balance starts tilting in favor of one in a format battle, then the domination tends to grow and become final, said Kazuharu Miura, an analyst at Daiwa Institute of Research in Tokyo. "The trend became decisive I think this year," he said. "When Warner made its decision, it was basically over." With movie studios increasingly lining up behind Blu-ray, retailers also began to stock more Blu-ray products. Friday's decision by Wal-Mart Stores Inc (WMT, Fortune 500)., the largest U.S. retailer, to sell only Blu-ray DVDs and hardware appeared to deal a final blow to the Toshiba format. Just five days earlier, Netflix Inc. (NFLX) said it will cease carrying rentals in HD DVD. Several major American retailers had already made similar decisions, including Target Corp. (TGT, Fortune 500) and Blockbuster Inc (BBI, Fortune 500). Also adding to Blu-ray's momentum was the gradual increase in sales of Sony's PlayStation 3 home video-game console, which also works as a Blu-ray player. Sony has sold 10.5 million PS3 machines worldwide since the machine went on sale late 2006. HD DVD supporters included Microsoft Corp (MSFT, Fortune 500)., Intel Corp (INTC, Fortune 500). and Japanese electronics maker NEC Corp. Microsoft's Xbox 360 game machine can play HD DVD movies, but the drive had to be bought separately, and Nishida said about 300,000 people have those. Worldwide sales of personal computers with HD DVD drives total about 300,000 worldwide, including 140,000 in North America and 130,000 in Europe, he said. Recently, the Blu-ray disc format has been gaining market share, especially in Japan. A study on fourth quarter sales last year by market researcher BCN Inc. found that by unit volume, Blu-ray made up 96 percent of Japanese sales. Sony said it did not have numbers on how many Blu-ray players had been sold globally. Toshiba's stock slipped 0.6% Tuesday to 824 yen after jumping 5.7% Monday amid reports that a decision was imminent. Sony shares climbed 2.2% to 5,010 yen after rising 1% Monday. Also Tuesday, Toshiba said it plans to spend more than $15.7 billion for two plants in Japan to produce sophisticated chips called NAND flash memory, which are used in portable music players and cell phones. Production there will start in 2010. To top of page |

They announced a while back that they'd be open to making a BD addon for 360 if that was the format that was adopted. Everyone was screaming at them to include the HDDVD drives in their 360s, now they look like friggin geniuses.
And the Java part of blu-ray is just the addon features & menus. As far as watching the movie, the two formats are identical. |

well you do have pretty much one of the cheapest cars possible to purchase Was also four years old when I get it. But it suits my needs, has great gas mileage, and has given me nary a problem in the two years I've had it. This post has been edited by Spectatrix: Feb 26 2008, 02:46 PM -------------------- |

Just sayin... you could prob have lots of dramatic "that costs as much as my car!" when you're using yours as a comparison

pretty funny that the best selling high def disc this past week was HD-DVD even after it's announced by the developer that it's DEAD.

Well if you have a player and already have a bunch of disks, why not nab more HD DVDs? Especially if they're effectively on clearance now...
