My family is getting so big (we're up to 8 children with the addition of Jason) that we are doing a gift exchange. I drew names for the list of who gets who, but I'm trying to think of rules/boundaries that should be set. Do any of your families do something similar? What rules do you have? Also, what's an appropriate price limit to set for a family that has college students, newlyweds, new parents, new homeowners and newly employeds (after being unemployed for the past year)?

no ive never done anything like that but i always thought a $50 price cap is good. less than 50 dollars and it gets kind of hard to get the perfect gift imo especially for people that are on the brink of their new life but still doable, but more than 50 dollars is typically pushing it for me.

We do the same thing. We draw straws. Sometimes, I end up with four Playstations. Sometimes, I end up having to steal my cousin's pastel neckties. It's all a crapshoot.

maybe have older adults buy for older adults and kids for kids?
ie. a 14 yr old may have a hard time shopping/paying for 34yr old Aunt Sally and 34yr old child-hater Aunt Sally may have a hard time shopping for 12 yr old Jim-Bob

thats the kind of stuff i always hated

yeah, i think $25 is best for the family.

did one last year at the airport; i brought a bottle of booze and ended up with some shitty little toy/game. made sure to set it on top of the trash pile before i left that day... they got the message.

You can hardly even buy a nice t-shirt with $25... Make it $50 - $100 and you actually get nice stuff.

First, don't look quite so constipated when giving the gift like you did in your weddings pictures. This makes the receiver of the gift think you're giving them a pile of shit..

Second, don't talk too much about it. Just be like "here you go" and don't come off all snobby and expect them to grovel at your feet because you bought them a $13.50 electric lightup snowman from K-Mart.

Other than these things, there are really rules smile.gif

have FUN! smile.gif
