So, I knew that they did have a lot of fees. Even with a "student" account, you would get slapped with fees if you saw a teller more than once a month, use the ATM more than 6 times in one month, etc. Now this is bullshit, I have since moved from TX after I graduated, so the closest branch is at least 300 miles away. Anyways, they send me an e-mail with my online statement, and I never bother to look, but I decided to do it today. Since February they've been charging me a $9 "account maintenance fee", so my left over balance from May 06 is now $72 less. This is fucking ridiculous that they would change their minimum balance fees without even letting me know. Fuck these assholes. Luckily I'm going back to TX next week, and I'm closing my fucking account. Is there even anything I could to do get my money back from these assholes?

Seriously, how the fuck am I suppose to know that back in February they raised the minimum required account balance to avoid a fee from $0 to $750? They didn't mail me anything, they never sent an e-mail, they never gave me any sort of notification. -------------------- Beers that I have had, updated July 5th, 2009: 1,548

haha i think it"s the weather that is driving people to anger.
BUT i do have something to contribute. i had ibc bank heading up to lubbock and they pulled that on me. if you call them, write them, let them know your situation. they may be able to reconcile your account for half more or less. this is one of those situations that communication with a bank is key, and it's a good thing you caught it now. good luck |

i emailed them and told them to refund every penny or i'd go absolutely apeshit inside of a branch. they did. then i closed the account. wells fargo is the devil's asshole |

Been banking there since high school. And I never had $750 in that account, or got charged any type of monthly fee. I don't believe that they charge you to see a teller, or to use their ATMs either. Go in, ask to speak to a manager, explain the situation, tell them you don't want to close your account because you receive excellent customer service every time you're there, but that you have to do what's in your best interest financially. Don't tell them there's not one around you or they'll know you're going to close your account and will have no reason to give you any money back. And maybe start being more involved in your finances. -------------------- Forget regret

The idea of a courtesy credit is to retain your business and they're not as likely to give it to you if you take that approach. Best bet is to say something along the lines of "I love BoA, but this is really making me want to cancel my account." I'd reccommend calling them for this. Pressure over the phone and pressure via email are two totally different things. Also, say that you're looking to get an equity loan or something like that and ask what their rates are. You'd be surprised at how the thought that they might make a sale will change a customer service rep's disposition. Lastly, be polite but firm to the person you speak to. They're really just middlemen in the situation. It may be pleasing to curse the hell out of them, but they're not as likely to give you credit for doing so. In various call center jobs that I've had, I've given away a lot of credit to customers that don't deserve (at least within company policy) because they were reasonable, polite, and stood their ground. -------------------- Holy shit, pebkac, you're awesome! EVERY SINGLE TIME i have called BofA for ANYTHING, they have been nothing but polite and helpful. Once I called to see if I could get the interest rate on my credit card lowered, and they did that and added a couple other things to my account that gave me added features I didnt have before.
One time, I ate at a restaurant in Austin and the stupid server authorized my card for $178 instead of the $17.80 my tab was. The restaurant said they couldnt do anything about it until the charge went through completely, meanwhile I'm stuck with a $2 balance in my account and no gas or food. I went up to the local BofA and they gave me a temporary credit of $150 so that I could get gas and food...because I showed them the receipt from the restaurant. It was awesome. The charge cleared a couple days later and I never once had to worry about the money in my account. Best customer service I have ever had, by far. |

Neither the original $500 nor the cancellation ever showed up on my account. Oh Im fully aware of that. I spoke to several managers there, and they were all like "sorry about your luck". Im so anal about my money that I catch a lot of stupid shit like this. Once when I ate at Trudy's, they authorize your card for amount of ticket + 25% gratuity, so even if you only tip 15% you still have that extra 10% being held until the charge clears. Most restaurants just authorize for the amount of the ticket, not including gratuity. I called Trudy's wondering why I there was a charge for more, and they told me their policy. I will still eat there cuz its one of my fav restaurants, but I did tell the manager that I didnt appreciate them doing that without noting it on the ticket. |

ING pwns BoA Yeah, I know it takes 2-3 days to show up, but a retailer can cancel a charge before it goes through. ING, unfortunately, has lost my business for now. I was not happy about them dropping rates twice in the last couple of months, both times the day after the fed cut rates. I moved my money to a local (Austin) credit union and am getting 6.01% APY on checking (with, thus far, customer service as excellent as that I got from ING). My BoA experience consists purely of me opening an account and then immediately closing it because I decided I wanted to bank elsewhere (Compass). Compass was kind of a dud too, but eh, whatever. i have had a BoA account (student one) for the past 6 years, and havent really had that much of a problem with it. I have gotten some fees but when i called boa about it, it was usually a mistake, or they canceled it if i complained. other than that, it pisses me off that they charge you for the drive up banking....
my girlfriend had a BoA credit card, and only had it for 2 months due to them sucking. They gave her all sorts of crap with mail and forms at the beginning, but that is sort of expected. And then for some reason they gave her a 50 dollar credit on her credit card that we do not know where it came from or why it was there, but she didnt call about it since it was 50 free bucks. She signed up for the online credit card payments, so it automatically deducts the amount so she does not need to worry about it. The first month it didnt work, and she called and they told her the system was down, so it wasnt her fault it didnt work and they didnt charge her for the late payment. The next month, it again did not take the money, and they charged her late fees, even though she was signed up. They refused to give her the money back even though she was signed up for the automatic payments and it didnt work....so she immediately canceled the card and closed her account.... -------------------- bored...so i did this

To be completely honest with you, I think BofA eliminates all fees if you do a certain amount of banking. I throw a couple grand into my account at a time and spend a lot of money, so I have a lot of transactions on my account. Plus, I have a credit card, a savings, another checking account, and had a brokerage account through BofA. Never once have I been charged for using their drive up banking, I use the ATM all the time, etc. The only charge I have ever had on my account has been for using a foreign ATM. Not only does the ATM charge you, but BofA will also charge you. I have a student account. It's not like I have some fancy account. Plus, I went to the BofA here in San Marcos, sat with my friend while she signed up for an account, and got to talking to the BofA dude and he gave me a free box of checks with designs on them. If you treat people with respect and chat it up a bit, you get stuff out of it. Plus the guy was super hot so that was cool too. heh

Well, fuck BoA. I've got an account with US Bank here in Colorado and I use it for the sole purpose of getting cash out when I need it. I can go to the teller unlimited amount of times, and no minimum balance to avoid fees. It's not a student account, just a regular one that everyone can get.
I told the bank rep my situation, and in so many words, he said that it wasn't profitable for BoA to keep me as a customer. Colorado is one of the few states that BoA. They'd probably lose a lot of money because they got a lot of credit unions to compete against. I was only able to recoup half of what was stolen from me. I probably should keep better track of a thieving bank, but they should have sent me notice that they were going to charge me an account maintenance fee. -------------------- Beers that I have had, updated July 5th, 2009: 1,548

I told the bank rep my situation, and in so many words, he said that it wasn't profitable for BoA to keep me as a customer. Exactly. What a lot of you fail to realize is that banks still have to make money. If you aren't bringing them business by using your card enough, making deposits regularly, and utilizing services they offer then you aren't going to be profitable for them. They have to get their money some way. BofA is a grown-up bank. I've known this since before I even started banking with them. It's not a secret. If a bunch of kids just went there to get the free checking and never put much money into their account, why would BofA want to keep them? I love BofA. I take care of them, they take care of me. I guess a lot of people just fail to realize that they too are a business that needs to make profit. Never EVER had a single fee on my account for any of the problems you listed... never for using their drive up service, their atm's, NOTHING. Got a foreign ATM charge ONCE, and I learned my lesson to not be a lazy ass and find a BofA atm. They are all over the place. I haven't had a single bank that has treated me as great as BofA. Everything from excellent customer service in their banks and over the phone to having my atm deposits go through on my account the second I deposit them, no matter what day of the week or what time of the day it is.

Just had a pretty kick ass experience with Bank of America. Here's the story:
I placed an online order for some tweeters for a speaker I'm building about two weeks ago. Right after I finish the order, I get an email saying the item is out of stock and won't be in stock for a couple weeks. I called them and asked them to cancel the order, they said sure, and I received a confirmation email that it was in fact, cancelled. Well today I see the full charge from them on my account, so I call them. Guy looks it up, says it looks like they made a mistake and actually charged it and sent it when it came in. I said no problem, go ahead and credit me and as soon as I receive them I'll refuse shipment. They said that they can't credit me until they receive them back. I said sure you can, if you can credit me when you receive them you can credit me now. They basically told me they wouldn't. So I told them I'd contest it with my bank and hung up on them. Called BoA, they confirmed the transaction had posted then forwarded me to their claims dept. Lady was extremely nice, took down all the info, even had me fax her the email cancellation I'd received from the company, and then sent in a temp credit to my account right then. She said that credit will stay there while they investigate the claim, and likely remain for good as she said this type of occurance usually ends in favor of the customer. Anyhow, I was very impressed with the speed they had in taking care of this and crediting me back. It's great to see my bank has my back when I get treated with some terribly bad business. |

My credit company does that too. No big deal.
Shortly after this thread, I closed that US Bank account I have here in Colorado. I was trying to figure out what I would need a bank for and couldn't think of a good reason. -------------------- Beers that I have had, updated July 5th, 2009: 1,548

I finally reopened checking and savings accounts after nearly a year. I got tired of carrying around $20k in cash. That reminds me I get paid tomorrow. Maybe I should get around to depositing my other paychecks. I already have 3 sitting in my closet

so how do you pay your bills? i guess i don't follow... Everything that can be charged gets put on my credit cards. Cell phone, internet, etc. Utilities are paid through their respective auto bill pay system or checks. Rent, I just write a check. -------------------- Beers that I have had, updated July 5th, 2009: 1,548

Had yet another great experience with Bank of America myself.
My paypal was hacked and they charged stuff using my empty BofA account (I have two accounts with Bank of America). I filed fraud charges with Paypal and then contacted Bank of America about the overdraft charges. BofA told me they would refund me the overdraft charges as soon as the money from Paypal was credited. I was like "ok whatever. Thats fine. I don't use that account anyway." Had it been an account I use, I KNOW FOR A FACT, BofA would have credited the money right then. So a couple days later Paypal overturns the charges, and I get an email saying the money will be back in my PAYPAL account in 3-5 business days. This poses a problem. I needed them to credit my bank account so that I could get the overdraft charges overturned. I called BofA and offered to send them the emails. The lady on the phone was very pleasant and credited my account without me having to show any documents. Like I said before, the more accounts a person has with BofA and the more money they process through BofA, the better a person is treated by them. You either get treated like royalty or you get treated like shit (because you aren't making them any money. You are useless to them). I love BofA and probably will never change banks. |

When you open an account, they give you checks and a check card. The check card can be used to withdraw money from your account or use it like any Visa check card for purchases(which I don't do).
You just go to any ATM to withdraw money, and they credit back the ATM fees. -------------------- Beers that I have had, updated July 5th, 2009: 1,548

Oh yeah, and you get interest on their checking account. You can buy stocks, mutual funds, CD's all online.

Spex, you know of any bank/union with a good apy? Checking or savings? If you're in Austin, for checking I'd recommend United Heritage Credit Union. 6.01% APY as long as you get online statements, do one direct deposit/debit per month, and 10 debit card transactions a month (doesn't matter whether it's processed as debit or credit, but ATM withdrawals don't count). That APY is up to 25k, APY over that is 1.01%. Good customer service overall, I just wish they had a savings account that was as good as this checking account. I've got my savings at Washington Mutual right now. Their online savings account (just have to set it up online and online statements -- otherwise is just like their other savings account) is currently 3.3%, higher even than the online-only banks. My boyfriend and I have both experienced good customer service with them, but they have their horror stories just like every other big bank. When the fed isn't going all screwy with the federal funds rate, eTrade usually has the best savings rate, but I fucking HATE their website and interface. Haven't heard good things about their customer service either, and my own experience was so-so. ING Direct has fantastic customer service, but their rates the past couple of years have been a tad bit lower than other online-only banks. -------------------- |

i don't know why everyone has problems with wells fargo
i'll agree they are way too big for what they are but i've NEVER had an issue with them...i've never been charged, deducted, or scammed... i once overdrew my account back when i was a freshman and they refunded the fee... if you're talking about a savings account with wells fargo most banks have stipulations...you have to have a certain amount in a savings account but a checking account you do not... i just thank god for USAA....they are simply amazing -------------------- "Ah, y'know it's funny, these people they go to sleep, they think everything's fine, everything's good. So, I woke up this morning, made a business call only to find out I have to pay $150, so I was a little upset.
Fast forward about 2 hours. I log-in to my BofA account. I'm expecting like $120 in there, but just wanted to make sure nothing else had hit. To my surprise, there is $294.39 in there. I'm like "uhh.... how did I get money?" So, I click on account history, and there is an ATM Error Deposit Credit of $167.53. I'm thinking "CHA CHING!" That solves my problem of the bill from earlier!!!! But then I start thinking, and I know all of my deposits I have made recently have hit my account properly. I always check online after making an ATM deposit. Plus, the last few deposits I have made were in even increments of $20 bills. So, I decide to call and ask because I don't want them audit my account later and pull this money back out. I call, and they say that the last deposit I made on 6/16, I entered the amount as $160 but there was actually $327.53 in the envelope. That's where the difference of $167.53 came up. Ummm... ok? I figure banks audit their books all the time, though, so I might as well come clean. I told the lady that I really don't know why that money is there. She put in a request for them to research the deposit, but didn't put for them to correct it. That way, it could still be free money for us. I should find out in 7 business days. Sure would be nice if I get to keep that money. |

So it looks like we get to keep the money. I just called BofA and they closed the request for account maintanence without drafting the money out. All the documentation says it's ours. If for some reason, they audit down the line and draft that money back out and it overdrafts the account, they will reimburse us the overdraft fees. Yay for free money!

why don't you just use USAA? We want to. My husband just hasn't signed up yet because he doesn't want to bother changing his direct deposit. Heh. He is currently using Fort Bliss Federal Credit Union. My BofA account is like our joint account that we pay bills with, and his account we use for food and fun. It's kinda a pain in the ass every time he has to withdrawl money from his FBFCU account to deposit bill money into my account, but it's a lot less of a pain than dealing with the Army and changing the direct deposit over. His account doesn't have checks so we have to use my account for rent and stuff. I like the BofA account, though, because my mom can deposit money in there if we are ever in an emergency. We are in the process of a lot of changes, like buying furniture, baby stuff, planning a big move, etc so I occassionally borrow money from my mom for a week or two then pay her back. It would be such a pain if all we had was USAA, wouldn't it? I mean, they don't have physical banking sites.

I used to bank with BofA and had the same maintenance fee issues. I just closed my account and it wasn't a big deal. Wells Fargo is complained about often. My manager used to work there as a manager and dislikes them. USAA is a fairly good bank. I know people like to sing their praises. I have been with them since I was 15. I haven't had many problems with them, but my dad believes they are starting to go down in the way of customer service. And yes, he does have first hand knowledge of how they used to be run since he retired from there not long ago. The point is, every bank has flaws to them. Every bank is after your money, if they weren't how would they stay in business? If you want good interest rates, *usually* internet banks are your best bet (such as ING).

I know. :-( They do work with you really well though. They will send you envelopes that are prepaid so you can mail in a deposit. They have the best internet site I have ever seen for a bank. They will even wave ATM fees. So for that, I love them haha.

Wells Fargo is complained about often. My manager used to work there as a manager and dislikes them. Actually, thats who I use and I havn't really had any problems with them. Their customer service has always done well by me at least (for instance reversing overdraft fees and such in case of an overcharge or a check not going through in time, etc). The only problem is that I move in a month, and the closest wellsfargo branch is a good 40 minute drive away.... I actually think I am going to get in with a credit union, take out a loan and pay off my credit card, then just set something up with the credit union to take it out of my paycheck. *edit* Scratch that, they just built a branch in town.....but ill still probly go with a Teachers credit union -------------------- Brandon....you're the reason I'm pro-choice.

Compass sucks my metaphorical nuts. I hate that bank. They offer a credit card, but their online bill system doesn't offer bill pay. Supposedly, in July they are going to upgrade the site to offer bill pay, but the last year of having to drop my payment off or mail it in has been ANNOYING.
Oh and then there was the one time that I had been vomiting every day for a month back when I was in my first trimester. I felt AWFUL. I usually didn't get out of bed until 3 in the afternoon because I would just puke the entire time I was up. Anyways, I knew my bill was due one day so I got up at 2 to take it there. I showed up at 3:15, thinking that the deadline to pay was at 4 p.m. like it is with BofA. No, their deadline to pay was at 3. I missed it by 15 minutes. I get a $39 late charge on my bill FOR 15 FUCKING MINUTES. So, I call and tell them the situation, that I had been really sick, and I had only been late by 15 minutes. they said in so many words, tough shit it was your fault not ours. IT WAS GAYER THAN GAY. |
