when are people gonna realize that if someone wants to shoot you, they will. regardless of whatever rules/law is in place. yeah it sucks but taking away my guns won't fix the problem.

if finding/obtaining a gun was nearly impossible then the amounts of shootings would drastically decrease.

would this be accomplished within 3 years? no itd be hard to do but not impossible.

then there would be gun smuggling/more selling out of trunks etc but if they are illegal than the penalities would be higher therefore a greater risk to partake in that illegal activity THEREFORE usually less people willing to do it.

hey it works for some countries

who cares about the rights of hunters? id rather my kids not get shot up

i bet it was pretty easy for him to get a gun is what i'm saying.

had he got in trouble for fighting then went home, parents didn't have a gun, wanted to buy a gun (not to mention probably not of age), had to wait 30 days or whatever, then by then i'm pretty sure he wouldn't be angry any more.

and even that you can buy guns is stupid.
i have pretty extreme gun law views.
no need to kill for our food anymore. we have grocery stores.
no need to kill prisoners. we have lethal injection.
no need to kill each other. self explanatory.
no need for guns.

"What country can preserve its liberties if its rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms." --Thomas Jefferson to William Stephens Smith, 1787.

"A strong body makes the mind strong. As to the species of exercises, I advise the gun. While this gives moderate exercise to the body, it gives boldness, enterprise and independence to the mind. Games played with the ball, and others of that nature, are too violent for the body and stamp no character on the mind. Let your gun therefore be your constant companion of your walks." --Thomas Jefferson to Peter Carr, 1785.

"The constitutions of most of our States assert that all power is inherent in the people; that they may exercise it by themselves in all cases to which they think themselves competent..., or they may act by representatives, freely and equally chosen; that it is their right and duty to be at all times armed; that they are entitled to freedom of person, freedom of religion, freedom of property, and freedom of the press." --Thomas Jefferson to John Cartwright, 1824.

American children are more at risk from firearms than the children of any other industrialized nation. In one year, firearms killed no children in Japan, 19 in Great Britain, 57 in Germany, 109 in France, 153 in Canada, and 5,285 in the United States. (Centers for Disease Control)
http://www.neahin.org/programs/schoolsafet.../statistics.htm

there may be more deaths by choking and drowning but of those how many are murders versus the number of shootings which may very well be mostly intentional? is what my earlier post meant

in my mind basic safety is more important then the freedom to own a firearm. and you dont need to own a gun to be safe and if there were no guns on the street you wouldnt have to protect yourself from them
i also have strict anti gun views

if ladders were known for murdering people id be one to outlaw ladders as well

ok serious answer...

1. deer hunting wouldn't be nearly as fruitful as I've never bow hunted. boar management would be much more difficult using snares and traps. then killing them would much messier.

2. I would be more nervous about my ability to protect my family from harm as I am not a ninja. the oultlaw will still have a firearm when honest men are disarmed.

3. I would have to find a new hobby that wastes a shitload of my money.

4. I would lose my quiver of honed skills as marksmanship is a perishable one. something I didn't know until I touched a firearm for the first time in a while.

for your info, after I got out of the marines I didn't touch a weapon for several years, and when I did it was a deer rifle. at that point, I realized that while at one point I was a marksmaship instructor and designated marksman, that was not the case anymore. granted my learning curve was small to regain what I had forfeited those couple years, but it was there.

at which point I decided to exercise my rights as an american. you'd better use them or this govt will slowly creep up on them...and be gone before you know it.

there.

if its nearly impossible to obtain a gun the average street hoodlum (who are the ones breaking into peoples houses) also wont have guns and most likely wont be ninjas either. you shouldnt have to fear for your family other than the fear of not raising them right

and this conversation belongs in the pussification thread.

once again, lets teach our kids that blaming someone else is the answer. it's the gun's fault! it's the politicians who allowed guns in our country! it's definitely not the fault of the one that pulled the trigger! damn those founding fathers for seeing that allowing their citizens to be well armed meant you'd have a strong country with possibility of instability very low which is exactly what we have blah blah this is a long run on sentence and i'm sure some damn grammar bitch will say something about it i don't care.

1. So let's ban handguns and assault rifles? I don't see how those are necessary for hunting.
2. I don't understand this argument. A good number of weapons criminals have are stolen from legitimate people. If it's difficult for legitimate folk to get firearms, it's more difficult for criminals to get them too.

3 and 4 are personal reasons, so I won't address them.

I wonder what Jefferson would say about guns in today's age? Unlikely anything like that, being that owning a hand gun won't impower you against the government. A gun will do nothing to stop a tank, rockets, and choppers. (Maybe the constitution should be amended to say "right to bear arms, heavy artillary, and strike weapons.)

I believe, banning guns would absolutely end all school shootings in this country. Why? Because the people who seem to lose it and shoot up the school aren't the ones that typically have a criminal history and would know the lower rungs of society well enough to know how to purchase a gun from the black market. Do you know how to buy a gun from the black market? I sure don't. (If you do, I would appreciate a PM telling me how though whistling.gif )

However, I do not believe school shootings occur often enough to justify banning your ability to defend yourself against those who do know how to buy guns off the black market. Though I would be interested in some data that showed how many lives were saved or criminal acts deterred because a civilian owned a gun.

You can arm a billion people with a hang gun, and that will do little to stop an army of jets, tanks, or any well equipped military like that one we currently have. 100 million people would be more effective in protest than they would be with a hang gun.

not to mention there arent 30million people capable to fire a gun in america. (total population doesnt differentiate between babies, amputees, and severely disabled. also not to mention all the people in the military that i guess in this scenario the "average" person would be fighting against. and then the military's civilian supporters) so all in all a few hundred rednecks who have convinced themself to take on the government with assault rifles would have no chance. unless they buy WMD's from the axis of evil but thats not 'merican.

No... the people that wrote the constitution left a loophole though. The constitution can be amended. If your only objection is that it's unconstitutional, then let's amend it.

i bet it was pretty easy for him to get a gun is what i'm saying.

had he got in trouble for fighting then went home, parents didn't have a gun, wanted to buy a gun (not to mention probably not of age), had to wait 30 days or whatever, then by then i'm pretty sure he wouldn't be angry any more.

and even that you can buy guns is stupid.
i have pretty extreme gun law views.
no need to kill for our food anymore. we have grocery stores.
no need to kill prisoners. we have lethal injection.
no need to kill each other. self explanatory.
no need for guns.

Hunters aren't out hunting cows or chickens

most of them want meat that you can't get in a grocery store like venison, quail, dove, pheasant, duck, etc..

Get rid of all guns.

Let's just all have butcher knives instead. Then the kiddies will play swords and only slice off fingers and noses.

....in all seriousness: I agree with Cupcake/Jon 100%. Just because some jackhole leaves his deuce laying around for his gaggle of ignorant (be it by age or improper parental instruction) kids to "play" with doesn't mean that suddenly everyone, even the vast majority of competent gun owners, can't exercise their Constitutional right.

Example: In 2005, about 36 out of 1,000 marriages ended in divorce. 3.6%
...guess marriage should be banned utilizing the logic being used in this thread.

when does marriage infringe upon my safety?

a tool is a tool. its use is for its inherent practicality. i wouldnt even come close to considering a gun a tool. i can build a home with a brick, i can make a bed with a brick, i can lay a foundation for a society with bricks. i cant rightly build a house of guns.

Banning guns because they have the potential to kill is like banning all people from reading books because it could breed harmful ideas...

Ban video games because they make kids crazy.

in my mind basic safety is more important then the freedom to own a firearm. and you dont need to own a gun to be safe and if there were no guns on the street you wouldnt have to protect yourself from them
i also have strict anti gun views

if ladders were known for murdering people id be one to outlaw ladders as well

I'm guessing you never lived in BFE while a group of illegal immigrant robbers (yes, I know it sounds like a joke) were roving through the area.

When wolves, coyotes, wild dogs come around threatening your livestock--which is a good portion of your income--we should just ask them to leave nicely.

And if they have rabies we need to just ask a little bit firmly.

Or I can dial 911 and the sheriff's office will rush to my house to help me. They are only 30 minutes away, but hey, better late than never, right?

And if some big mother fucker kicks in my door yelling at him real loud will make him go away?

Give me a fucking break. The only way to make sure your safe is to be the one with the gun.

And yes, all but the big mother fucker kicking in my door has happened to me.

what totally blows me away, is that some people i know( that want guns banned)...will walk into their homes and never lock the front door

if you're in fear of your life because people out there have guns, then why give them the opportunity to walk into your house and shoot you

we shouldn't ban guns...but we need to look into how we acquire guns

i lived part time/worked on a ranch for several years

coyotes are never a problem. a cow will go after one and that says a lot

you have wolves threatening you?! OMG they dont exist in texas anymore or many other places

if rabies = call your local CDC and they will inspect your property for free (there are also vaccines for rabies)

if we had a better education system and more social programs maybe you wouldnt have a 9ft tall 400lb redneck beating down your door

were they robbers or just mexicans? because not all illegals are out to kill you. and if they have guns somehow more evidence imo to outlaw guns!

Who said anything about cows? There are other animals referred to as livestock.

Everyone lives in Texas? And has always lived in Texas? Wow, are those history books wrong or what?

Call the CDC? "Yes, we don't know where the animal is now, but if you search these several hundred square miles I'm sure you will find it. I would have shot it myself, but its your job to take care of it."

Like I said, it was a group of illegal immigrants who were also robbers of rural communities.

Like I said, give me a break.

1 the CDC should be alerted. killing the animal and not reporting rabies can get you in a lot of trouble.

i assumed texas because majority of tech students are from texas, my mistake

and cows because anything OTHER than a cow will go after something so if even a cow does you got a problem with whatever livestock you have

also majority of the people in the US dont live in situations like that (ie a viable need to own a gun to protect yourself from daily rabies infested bear attacks). also less and less people live in those situations the world over

edit: wait i suppose goats wouldnt go after a coyote but typically you would have another form of livestock there to protect your own. ie mixing a donkey in or some horses or dogs. people have been doing that for thousands of years. it is also adorable

im the little gray one!

fatal accident totals:
Firearm 1,400 (1.5% of fatal accidents)

I don't think this is including the (presumably intentional, not accidental deaths) 10,100 homicides committed using firearms in the United States. (wiki is the source of course).

QUOTE
In one year, firearms killed no children in Japan, 19 in Great Britain, 57 in Germany, 109 in France, 153 in Canada, and 5,285 in the United States...
...
are these per capita numbers? I'm not saying we dont have more deaths but if it iis total deaths regardless of population its obviously going to make the US look worse.

Here are the per capita numbers (per 100,000...since those are the stats I like to use):

US: 1.755
Canada: 0.458
France: 0.177
Germany: 0.069
Great Britain: 0.031
Japan: 0.000

I would say that this shows a significant increase in # of children (not sure what age constitutes a child though) killed by firearms. And I guess Impala would have to agree with this statement because the US is an order of magnitude above, but feel free to refute this fact...

the one argument against guns is "they are meant to kill" and thats the reason they should be banned. Well i think thats the reason they SHOULDN'T be banned. Take guns away and violence remains in the form of stabbings and other ways to kill people. There was a news article lance posted where i think britian was banning knives from being carried.... yeah thats not retarded.

Personally if someone breaks into my house, or an animal is on the loose that is posing a danger, i'd rather not have to go to hand to hand combat in order to be safe. What if its only my wife and children in the house when someone breaks in? Does a female need to go to hand to hand combat in order to be safe too?

Anyway, with all these pages im sure everything has been said.

it's funny that there seems to be this huge fear that some big dude is gonna break down your door in the middle of the night and kill your whole family. and you NEED this gun to feel safe. i've lived for 25 years, a few in a crappy neighborhood, and never had anyone break into my house. much less with weapons drawn ready to blow holes in my body. i think the real reason that you need your guns is the first explanation that cupcake gave.

not to mention there arent 30million people capable to fire a gun in america. do you not realize that if the govt tried to take away the right to bear arms that we'd have a civil war on our hands...and no the military will not just blindly follow such a ridiculous and unconstitutional act.

the guys who serve in the mil (to include the high ranking officers) would be the first to take their toys and declare a true american state. that is a fact jack.

cmac, you may not have had your house broken into, but plenty of other people had, you may not have been attacked by a mtn lion while still coming across one, but other people have.

just because you haven't had to use a fireman doesn't mean other people haven't or needed to

nothing personal but your coming off as since you haven't needed to use a gun, no one else shouldn't

of course there's rare instances where people may need a gun.

like if you're in the mafia/crips/bloods and fear for your life.
or there's a pack of rabid widabeasts that have moved in next door.
or the apocalypse.

but in general every day life for 98% of the population there is no need for a deadly weapon. i see it as a cop out. there are other ways to solve problems.

Remember, Cannonball, take a big gigantic dog no matter where you go with you. They will scare off the man trying to mug you.

QUOTE
Encounters with cougars are rare and the risk of injury or death from an attack is infinitely small. In fact, your chances of being attacked or killed by a domestic dog are much, much greater.

QUOTE
Mountain lions hunt primarily at night and unprotected pets, sheep and goats are easy prey. You can also install outside lighting, clear brush away from around your home, or get a guard dog.

QUOTE
There are numerous breeds of guard dogs being used for livestock protection in the United States. They include: Akbash (Turkey), Great Pyrenees (France & Spain), Komondor (Hungary), Shar Planinetz (Yugoslavia), Maremma (Italy), Kuvasz (Hungary), Anatolian Shepherds (Turkey), Polish Tatra & Tibetan Mastiff. According to the Department of Fish & Game, any of these measures can be taken to protect livestock from lions, dogs and coyotes.

Why not have a gun, then, to shoot your dog that attacked you? The one you bought to protect you from mountain lions?

because if you're making an argument that you need a gun to protect from a cougar then you can make an argument that you need a gun to protect from rover, which is attacking more than a cat, which is stupid cause very few people get attacked by domestic dogs. ever.

i liked attacking with ladders better.

The point is, banning guns is pointless. We've banned drugs and do you see where we are today with that?

Its funny, i didn't know guns made me feel like i had a bigger dick by sitting in my closet quietly until cmac told me. Thank you cmac you've opened my eyes to the fact that my completely safe and rightly used gun is wrong because others misuse guns. And since others in this world are violent and misuse tools in order to kill people i should have mine taken away, even though it is a protection for my home as well as something i in general like to use for sport.

Keeping things out of the wrong hands isn't the answer, a blanket ban for nothing but reasons of stupid fear is obviously the answer. Pry it from my hands.

and has lance posted yet? this is usually his soap box... along with cops being evil of course.

yeah I'll just go buy a bigass dog and leave him out on the property 3 hrs away. that'll fix my lil red wagon.

return 2 months later to some rabid cujo fucker trying to kill me (or a dog that is missing for a variety of reasons). that'll be much better than just having a field gun on my hip in case I come upon a mtn lion or pack of boar.

moron.

seems more simple than sitting on your porch with your rifle, budweiser and american flag waiting to blast any animal that may happen to roam onto your land.

Since some people cannot show personal responsibility we should take everyone's choice to show responsibility?

Wow. And I thought the people on the right were harsh.

gun = trigger happy red neck... good to know

wow

I love how perfectly normal individuals who see the use of a firearm as ok = tiny dick red necks who need guns to feel big. The logic is outlandish. Make a law to keep guns away from the wrong people instead of punishing normal everyday americans for being responsible with firearms.

this would be a good start. but how do you determine what is "wrong people?" i'm sure this 14 year old kid was an average student before he showed up blasting away. if guns were more difficult to get then maybe there'd be less of this.
england seems to be doing pretty well with their no guns thing.

no, but you are referencing another country, but really it doesn't matter if they wear toilet seats on their dicks...that's them, this is us.

I guess we should switch to right-hand drive vehicles since england does it...

Apparently you don't read their papers. I was there for a day and read about high school kids (in seperate instances) violently killing nurses and family, etc.

One kid stabbed a nurse out side of a hospital 70 odd times

Another burned down a house for not getting to play xbox (believe that was england)

And another brutally stabbed a class mate

again... violence, yet guns weren't involved... how shocking

the instances seem to be far more consistent in the us.
besides it's much easier to kill more people from a distance with a gun. people have chances to escape burning buildings. stabbings kill one person. and i'd much rather defend myself against a knife than a bunch of flying bullets.

I don't think anyone ever claimed that a handgun ban or assault rifle ban would totally end crime forever.

But remember that things such as this make the news because they're unusual. You rarely ever hear "such and such brutally shot such and such in the heat of the moment" because that's just too mundane.

So to basically sum it up. Guns should be taken away from the MILLIONS of responsible law abiding citizens of america who can use them in a safe and protecting way because of the 1 person who could kill anyway being able to use a tool that could likewise be used to defend against his crazy ass?

Well since sharks kill a person each year, i say all swimming in the ocean be banned or all sharks killed based on the fact that they are great killers and swimming is just recreational anyway.

You go on about how guns aren't needed based on the low possibility of break ins etc. but then base your argument on guns being used in a VERY small percentage of violent crimes equaling that they should be taken away.

How about this, you give your guns away and convince bad guys to do the same. I'll keep mine safely in my closet and live a normal life just the same.
