Good God. They have a well known policy that if you are overweight and potentially take up more than one seat you must buy a second seat. 490 pounds. If I was stuck next to this guy for longer than, oh, 5 minutes, I'd be irate. I paid for my seat, you paid for yours but you're taking up two of them. Doesn't seem very fair. Also, this has to do with weight issues on planes. Every customer is assumed to be 190 lbs while pilots are doing their weight and balanced check. So without two tickets this guy is getting counted for less than half of what he weighs. They'll end up throwing on a couple of palettes of mail or cargo and the plane will end up crashing because of this fatty. (far fetched example) -------------------- "There is a level of cowardice lower than that of the conformist: that of the fashionable non-conformist." |

I agree that his complaint is a little silly, but...
1) They need to apply this restriction consistently. Unless this is a new policy (and I know it's not), he should have been made aware of it before now. 2) Obviously we don't know exactly how it was handled, but it's possible it could've been done more discreetly than it was, so as not to be as embarassing. -------------------- |

I think Southwestern should hire really fat people and also people who dress really sluttily. It's less embarrassing to be told that you're too fat to fly from another fat person than a skinny bitch. He can just be like, look at me, I always have to buy two tickets. Or look at me, you think southwest would let me on the plane dressing like this? Please, that's why I work at the counter.

damn i'm 330 and flyin southwest in a couple weeks Can you fit comfortably in the seat without lifting the armrest? Are you fine without a seatbelt extender? If both are answered yes, you should be fine. -------------------- "There is a level of cowardice lower than that of the conformist: that of the fashionable non-conformist." |

1) They need to apply this restriction consistently. Unless this is a new policy (and I know it's not), he should have been made aware of it before now. well, it is fairly new for southwest (like 4-5 years), but other airlines have been doing this since the 60's. it's consistently enforced, but every situation is obviously going to be different. southwest flights are generally at capacity, so they usually do charge fatties for the extra seat; people as big as this guy almost always know better than to take the chance and just buy the extra seat beforehand. had this been a flight with like 30 people on board, they wouldn't have done it. it's completely up to the discretion of the employees at the scene, and i'm sure they'll be commended (in house) for doing what they are told to do, for doing what was right. doesn't look like this guy is new to being a fucking manatee, so he should have known better. |

Funny how the guy has lost 50 pounds because of the incident.
Its sad that he had to be publicly humiliatied, but if it takes that to help people get healthier and stop being SO HUGE (and save a few years of thier life) then im all for it. -------------------- |

that's not cool. did you watch the video? the guy didn't get irate, he didn't cause a scene, he simply bought the ticket like they'd asked him to. he seems like a nice guy. he simply didn't appreciate being called out in front of a lot of people. you're saying bringing it to the news isnt causing a scene? they didnt bring out a megaphone and broadcast "hey fatty, you gotta get another ticket", they told him what was up, and took care of it in what seems like a discreet manner. fuck him. ps: http://www.reason.com/news/show/34263.html |

Southwest will end the family early boarding policy: http://chron.com/disp/story.mpl/front/5147141.html
I also read yesterday that anyone who pre-boards (disabilities, etc.) will not be allowed to sit in the exit row. All the more reason to get that 'A' boarding pass. -------------------- "There is a level of cowardice lower than that of the conformist: that of the fashionable non-conformist." |

I didn't see where it said the guy himself brought it to the news. Apparently this was quite a while back if the guy has lost 50 lbs since the incident. it also seemed to break the news right after the other two southwest policy new stories (w/the women's clothes). it could have just been the news people researching other southwest stories.
He was simply surprised because he'd flown with them so many times (obviously while he was as big as he was) and never been asked to purchase another ticket before. they're not consistently enforcing their policies if this man had flown that many times and never been asked to purchase another ticket. he didn't fight it and complied just as they asked. I just don't see why you guys are all offensive towards the man when he did was he was required to and simply told his story at face value to the news. |

god at one point after I graduated high school I weighed 257 pounds ... I weighed 205 when I was playing basketbally my sr. year and in the best shape of my life ... I think I maybe weighed 210 when I graduated ... And it sure as fuck wasn't like I was in the weight room at all for the first 3 or 4 years after I graduated hahahaha... Trust me it can be done a hell of a lot easier than most people think. -------------------- I r Ur Gawd!

it's not "easy". the concept is easy to grasp. it takes hard work. but yes it can be done. i've lost quite a bit at one time (from about 325 -> 275) and it definitely took a lot of hard work.

southwest is also experimenting with assigned seating, instead of the sit-anywhere cattlecall they have now. sposedly shaves almost 15 minutes off the turnaround time, and thats how southwest stays in the black. (that and the good fucking deal they got when they locked into a gas contract at a decent price, but that's gonna end soon.)

i'm going to pull an impala on this because nearly everything i'm quoting is misleading
southwest is also experimenting with assigned seating, instead of the sit-anywhere cattlecall they have now. true. in select cities. QUOTE sposedly shaves almost 15 minutes off the turnaround time, untrue. southwest's turnaround averages less than 30 minutes, so nope. QUOTE and thats how southwest stays in the black. i'm assuming you mean turnaround in general, because it would be ridiculous to think that an experiment in 3 cities is keeping the entire company afloat. QUOTE (that and the good fucking deal they got when they locked into a gas contract at a decent price, but that's gonna end soon.) untrue. their gas hedges are revolving. they expire and are renewed several times throughout the year, depending on the supplier, but they're not even close to paying "market" price for jetA. the day southwest has their first quarter in the red will soon be upon us (if prices stay high), but the day they leak like a sieve is another 50 years down the road. american had been consistently losing millions a day for years after 9/11; a lot of their pilots were given 20-30 cents on the dollar when they nixed the pension. QUOTE planes on the ground don't make money. true, fast turn around does = lower operating costs, which = everything they stand for. hell, even their EMGs take regular flights for business; i've been on the same plane with herb kelleher several times and have seen colleen barrett and gary kelly at all kinds of different airports around the country. |

I think that the people who take up more than one seat needs to buy another policy is a good idea. They just need to enforce it consistantly. If it's true that he's flown many times over the past few years without any problems, and then they enforce it once, that's not good. If you're body extends over the edge of the seat and crowds me, fuck you.
I was flying back to TX a few years ago, and there was a totally massive woman that was flying. Probably at least 500lbs. Surprisingly she didn't need crutches or canes or a motorized wheel chair to move around. She did buy 2 tickets. I would say that there was maybe an inch of room in between the armrests and her body when she put them down. She also laid down a pillow on each seat before she sat down. I'm never using those pillows again unless they're still in plastic wrap. -------------------- Beers that I have had, updated July 5th, 2009: 1,548

changing your entire lifestyle is most definitely not easy. If putting effort into something for two months of your life in order to set yourself on the right path is too fucking difficult then I have absolutley no sorrow or pity for you. I think most people find out that if they put the effort in for a few months and actually stick with it they find that they _NEVER_ want to go back to the way they were before. I mean christ I've been one of those people who gets absolutley irate if I have to go longer than 4 days without working out if I'm not "recovering" and I've been that way for nearly 3 years now ... It took me 2-3 months of just shutting the fuck up and doing it, and ever since then, it's been hard for me to *NOT* work out as much as possible. Seriously, looking back, it is _NOT_ as hard as people wanna make it out to be. -------------------- I r Ur Gawd!

i couldn't give a crap about your pity dogmeat. it sounds like it was really easy to make the changes in your life to lose weight. the physical aspect of losing weight and how to do it is obvious. exercise and change your diet, DUH. but any type of lifestyle change (especially a bad habit) is typically hard for people to get going. i'm sorry if you think otherwise but you're wrong. if it was so easy for people to make lifestyle changes, you wouldn't see any fat people. everyone would get eight hours of sleep a night. nobody would smoke. everyone would bathe and brush their teeth the appropriate amount. everyone would make good grades. etc etc. these are not excuses, just proof that major changes in your life are not always as easy as you're trying to make it out to be.

I don't think it's a major change at all.
Think about it. Eating one big mac instead of two. I don't believe this has ever killed anyone. Walking 30 minutes a few days a week, perhaps some light resistance training on the other days .... do this for a few months, feel the difference. You won't wanna go back. I'm not saying go balistic and try to go from being obeese to being mr. fucking olympia here. I'm sorry, but taking less than an hour out of your day to benefit your mind and body and not eating twice what you should is _NOT_ as fucking hard as you and others make it out to be. It's not. Period. It's all in your mind. Like I said, I've been there and done that, and most people who have been there and done that that I know of basically agree with me. Once you snap yourself out of it, you see it really wasn't that fucking hard, it just took a little patience and you can't quit on it. That's the main thing. Don't quit. -------------------- I r Ur Gawd!

Once you snap yourself out of it, you see it really wasn't that fucking hard, it just took a little patience and you can't quit on it. That's the main thing. Don't quit. -------------------- |

Finding a date. I don't think it's a major difficulty at all. Going up and talking to a girl rather than just sitting by yourself and drinking. I don't believe this has ever killed anyone. Spending 30 minutes a few days a week out at social hangouts, perhaps some light clubbing on the other days ... do this for a few months, feel the difference. You won't wanna go back. I'm not saying go ballistic and try to go from being Mr. Lonely to Mr. Studmuffin here. I'm sorry, but taking less than an hour out of your day to benefit your self-esteem and social life and not wallowing in your own self-pity and loneliness is _NOT_ as fucking hard as you and others make it out to be. It's not. Period. It's all in your mind. Like others have said, they've been there and done that, and most people who have been there and done that that I know of basically agree with me. Once you snap yourself out of it, you see it really wasn't that fucking hard, it just took a little patience and you can't quit on it. That's the main thing. Don't quit. I so knew this was coming Yup, it's not. I just make it that way So essentially, you just backed up what I said, as I understand exactly what it's like to have a falsity in my mind and to have overcome a falsity in my mind But, even though it will sound like an excuse .. It's tough for me to meet a girl that excites me. I like to feel excited. Yeah I could go get my cock schlobbed, but honestly, that doesn't really bring me much pleasure. I like to be emotional about females, and the ones that make me that way at them are usually few and far between .... Generally speaking, when I DO meet that girl, I'm not terribly shy, even though I usually am a little shy. Then they proceed to suck everyone's cock but mine and I blackmail them until their social life is ruined and I'm bitter for a year. I've never met a peice of iron or a treadmill that sucked somone elses cock in my parents bedroom or lied to me -------------------- I r Ur Gawd!

i couldn't give a crap about your pity dogmeat. it sounds like it was really easy to make the changes in your life to lose weight. the physical aspect of losing weight and how to do it is obvious. exercise and change your diet, DUH. but any type of lifestyle change (especially a bad habit) is typically hard for people to get going. i'm sorry if you think otherwise but you're wrong. if it was so easy for people to make lifestyle changes, you wouldn't see any fat people. everyone would get eight hours of sleep a night. nobody would smoke. everyone would bathe and brush their teeth the appropriate amount. everyone would make good grades. etc etc. these are not excuses, just proof that major changes in your life are not always as easy as you're trying to make it out to be. really? hehe I thought you'd be all about making changes in your life you mean it/if it's good for you. Isn't that why black folks should be able to get out of poverty? Just get up and move, right? -------------------- I go to the maize and blue

Well.
Ok. How is this. I have almost entirley stopped compulsivley masturbating. I allow my self an intensly sexual jackoff session once every 4 days now, down from 4-12 times a day previously. if I can stop jacking off constantly, ANYONE without a serious medical condition can drop some weight. Seriously. think about it. -------------------- I r Ur Gawd!

only if life was like that... but it ain't so you're saying that after all the extra help that black people get. all the extra scholarships, NAFTA, and other benifits, all the equal opportunity they get in life, welfare and WIC benifits.....they STILL can't make it? are you calling black people inferior? because thats what it sounds like. seems like with all the advantages, INCLUDING the protection of reverse rascism.... you blaming their poverty on their skin color makes you a racist. look here yellow-tits, my father struggled out of the ghetto of amarillo, 20 years old, raising a newborn son, an unemployeed wife, working minimum wage at a meat packing plant WITHOUT ANY government assistance. if my father can do it on his own, then so can those fuckers. they just have to WANT to. and stop being flat-handing "gimmie mo' massa!" sons of fucking bitches -------------------- |

really? hehe I thought you'd be all about making changes in your life you mean it/if it's good for you. Isn't that why black folks should be able to get out of poverty? Just get up and move, right? thank you for proving my point. but since you're obviously going back to the thread from a while back about how you thought black people had less opportunity, i'll bite. everyone still has the same opportunities in their lives. i don't blame anyone but myself for being overweight, just like poor people have no one to blame but themselves for being poor. does that mean it's easy to make the changes in your life necessary to accomplish either of those goals? no. but the ability to make those changes exists. dogmeat, you still haven't read a word i've said. i'm not saying it's hard to physically lose weight. it's extremely obvious to every person on this planet, that if you eat better and exercise, you will lose weight. like i said above, changing habits is difficult. major props to you that you got 'er done. obviously, at some point in your life you did have bad physical/eating habits or you'd have never been fat in the first place. there is no doubt in my mind i'll git 'er done too. i've done it once before. surely you can agree that old habits die hard. |

i guess once you get into that good habit then it would be easy. it's just having the will to get rid of the bad habits and learning the good ones takes will power. if you've got that, you're set.
when it call comes down to it, the world is divided between the people who have will power, and those who don't. (and i'm not saying i do). -------------------- ![]() |

so you're saying that after all the extra help that black people get. all the extra scholarships, NAFTA, and other benifits, all the equal opportunity they get in life, welfare and WIC benifits.....they STILL can't make it? are you calling black people inferior? because thats what it sounds like. seems like with all the advantages, INCLUDING the protection of reverse rascism.... you blaming their poverty on their skin color makes you a racist. look here yellow-tits, my father struggled out of the ghetto of amarillo, 20 years old, raising a newborn son, an unemployeed wife, working minimum wage at a meat packing plant WITHOUT ANY government assistance. if my father can do it on his own, then so can those fuckers. they just have to WANT to. and stop being flat-handing "gimmie mo' massa!" sons of fucking bitches alright there white flappy skin, I'm saying it takes time. Your dad is an individual case, vast majority of people can't/won't do that, we can't hold up society to most individual cases. If by that standard, then we'd all be millionaires. And no it's not because of the color of their skin, it's because of the way they think. Every situation is different. All I'm saying when I first brought it up that is, it takes time. Things are not easy as one two three. It may appear easy to you or whoever to lift one self out of poverty, but it takes an incredible amount of determination to do so, and a lot of time as well. Things are not so simple that people are fat because of them selves, and people are poor because they don't want more. There are social trends, trend shows that the poorer people are more likely to be overweight, though there are many factors involved here. The number of jobs they need to hold in order to make ends meet, this cut down on their cooking time, fast food and ready made foods are just easier and also more affordable. Another factor could be that poorer people are less informed than the wealthier people about nutrition and dietary habits. The reason why they are less informed could be because they don't have the time that figure this out, they don't have the resources to learn about this, or the education level to understand this. I don't know if it's safe to assume that everyone would like to eat healthier or would like to loose weight, but even if there were the case, you can't hold all things equal for wealthier people and poorer people. Because after all wealthier people have more resources at their expenditure, such as more information, more money, many times more time where they can take the time to think about the food they're putting into their bodies. I'm not saying that every rich person is skinny, or every poor person is fat, there will always be outliers and people who don't fit in, but usually that's more rare than not. And I'm not talking about a particular race here. I'm just talking about poor people here. I bring up this example because it is not so racially fueled, and people think better when they're not pissed off. So coming back to the point of race here, I am not saying it's right to blame other people when you don't even try. But generally things are not that simple. There are many factors that could influence one's decisions and actions, and frankly I don't know what these factors are. Also it's not just black people who blame the "system", plenty of well educated white people blame the "system" for this problem as well. -------------------- I go to the maize and blue

has studying law turned you away from your old conservative ways, seth? I've never really been a true conservative... its just that people here are SO left that it was easy to show more conservative view points. So im not sure what you think i've switched on. I've never blamed poor for BEING poor. I mean don't get me wrong, most don't help their posistion... but its mostly because they CAN'T help themselves (either finacially or educated enough) But i do still hold that poor are still provided with a good chance to get out of poverty (if they do things right... which goes back to problem one... whether they are educated or fincially stable enough) -------------------- |

Christine made an excellent point with her slam on Aaron, and then Lang continued up with it and made another excellent point against Impala.
The thing is, Impala, I don't care what your stance on poverty is. I'm not going to argue it one way or another. But this is why I think you're stupid, literally stupid: Incredible hypocricy. I do not understand how YOU can make an excuse about one of your own short comings, yet previously slam another group of people for their shortcomings. I do not understand how YOU and accept that you have some disadvantage, but you cannot accept that others could also have a disadvantage. I do not understand, Impala, how you cannot see how wrong you are. Aaron, Christine got you. You can post every excuse in the world why your situation is different from Impala's, who believes his situation is different from the impoverished. But the fact of the matter is, there is a lot of shit in our lives that is not within our control. And the root of the problem is the fact that we cannot change ourselves nearly as easily as everyone would like to think we can. Sure, it's easy for the professional fitness trainer to say "anyone can get in shape, I did it!". It's easy for the Engineer to say "Anyone can understand math, I did it!". It's easy for the high school cheerleader to say "Anyone can be popular, I did it!". It's easy for the billionaire to say "Anyone can be rich, I did it!". There are a million books out there that tell how just a few simple changes in your life and lead to a better one. But yet, have they ever really helped anyone? Has anyone ever really made a change in their life because they read some inspirational book or heard some inspirational encouragement from another techsans member that they couldn't have made otherwise on their own? Like all this time, all they needed in their life to lose weight was to hear from someone else that they're fat, and that it's so god damn easy to not be so fucking fat. You don't think every fucking day of their fucking life they don't wish to be someone else? Are you really so arrogant to think that just because it was easy for you, it's easy for everyone? Like you're some sort of human standard? Yeah you are. But what you aren't, is smart enough to realize you aren't right. And it isn't easy. It isn't easy for the poor to get out of poverty. But it's easy for someone who comes from a middle class family, raised on educated values, to look at the poor and say "I did it! Why can't you?". It isn't easy for the fat to get into shape. But it's real fucking easy for those out there raised on proper eating and good habits to look at fattie and say "wtf is wrong with you? Look at what you did to yourself!" It's not easy for someone ugly and socially inept around attractive women to suddenly get charisma and suave. But it sure as hell easy to point and laugh at those people who can't do it. Because a small easy change can fix everything... Because it's so damn easy. If it were easy, everyone would do it. -------------------- ![]() |

I agree with you on the point of it not necessarily easy to make significant lifestyle changes (maybe because I made that point two days ago? |

I think you should try this... it would help you deal with your anger. It's really good stuff, trust me.

Most poor people are born poor
Most fat people are not born fat -------------------- A psychotic world we live in. The madmen are in power. How long have we known this? Faced this? And--how many of us do know it? Perhaps if you know you are insane then you are not insane. Or you are becoming sane, finally. Waking up. I suppose only a few are aware of all this. Isolated persons here and there. But the broad masses... what do they think? All these hundreds of thousands in this city, here. Do they imagine that they live in a sane world? Or do they guess, glimpse, the truth...?

Most poor people are born poor Most fat people are not born fat But kids that are fed 40,000 calorie diets by their parents don't have much of a chance to know a healthy life either. But it doesn't take a good credit check to eat a little heathier when you grow up either. So fatties can be grown, but it is much of an easier fix than people who are poor from birth and can't even pass a credit check (or get a co-signer) to get out of poverty -------------------- |
