Just heard on Rush, some new scientific discovery that if you expose salt water to a certain radio frequency it will burn. as in, we could use saltwater as a fuel. crazy stuff i'll try to find a link.

Don't worry, I'm sure a conspiracy will pop up and this discovery will never see the light of day as a commercial fuel again. The environmentalists will want to thwart it because Flipper won't have as much of his natural habitat, and the oil companies will of course, buy it, and patent it, then continue to rape us all into the poorhouse...

not the japanophile

you've got no basis to complain about this possible new fuel source using up "all our water". this isn't oil, it's fucking water, and apparently it works, so maybe we should see what can be done with it before pulling the hippie card.

ocean water is our most abundant resource. 2/3 of the world being covered in it to amazing depths - can it even really seriously be called "limited"?

certainly a nicer way to move energy towards UNTIL true renewable energy is fully efficient and economical and still not so heavily relied on fossil fuel production

well ok it's not "unlimited". no there's not as much freshwater as saltwater, but it definitely renews itself. it's not like we'll run out one day and there won't be any left. the point is, rain is basically a natural water distillery.

there may be fresh water on the earth for long periods of time but enough to sustain a massively growing population? a population that is springing up in some of my most arid and drought ridden parts of the world? parts of the US are facing water shortages and Lubbock is one of them

because it rains sometimes or even floods doesnt mean that water is all or even mostly being saved for future use. the majority of fresh water we get/use turns into waste water = water that will never be seen again/reused

impala you always try to sound like you know what you are talking about
its like you are from magical land hidden in the deep south somewhere in a trailer that doesnt get newspapers, television or anything else

first off a newer concern in addition to global warming is global diming. they are two forces that are partially working against each other and its the needed balance of the two thats keeping us from an accelerated massive downfall.
certain parts of the world, possibly most of the highly inhabiated world water evaporation is decreasing because for evaporation you need solar radiation. and like you picture you need evaporation to have rain

ive posted this at least twice

the ONLY useable fresh water is ground water which is .3% of the earth
some things to think about
to produce 1 car = 100k gallons of water
family of four toliet flushing in a day = 100 gallons
domestic use of water is only 1% though
and consumed water is NOT renewable. that water is lost to the water cycle so your picture you posted has nothing to do with anything
25% of all water withdrawn in the US is consumed
60% of worlds water is used to irrigation only 37% is actually taken up by plants - rest is taken up by evaporation or lost thus never to be seen again

just deleted a whole bunch because impala wont get it anyway so i just wasted my time

*bangs head on desk several times*

For fuck's sake man, fresh water is an unlimited supply?!? Every natural resource that physically exists on this planet is limited. There is only a finite amount of water/air/oil/coal/gold/etc.... contained within the boundaries of our world. Cycle this, cycle that...finite amount.

Go back to 3rd Grade, impala...apparently you only learned how to stare at charts, not read and understand them and other associated texts.

ok jackass, duh. nothing in the entire universe is in an unlimited supply, but if you guys would take five seconds from the "omg impala is a stupid jackass" circle jerk and look at the data from the USGS I posted, you'll see what I'm talking about.

see each of those bits of numbers? the top is the consumption in billions of gallons per day. the bottom is the total renewable amount of water available each day. it doesn't take long to figure out that we're not coming anywhere near using up all the water. yes there's only X number of water molecules on the planet earth, yes some people have problems getting water, but no there is not and won't ever be a time when there will not be enough of the shit for the total population of the earth.

i think it was catherine that gave some number like "omg only .3% of earth's water is fresh". well there's 332 million cubic miles of water on our planet. 0.3% of that is a shit ton. is it infinite? well duh, of course not, but due to the water cycle it renews itself constantly, and has been for billions of years. it's far more than we'll ever use.

theres already not enough for the people of the earth and has been in the past. how many hundreds of thousands of people died in the 80's in ethiopia? thats just one of the severe cases

why did they all die? a 20yr drought

mmmk... they died because they didnt drink water that's a great observation... what does this have to do with the amount of freshwater on the planet?

oh and just curious, do they now have water to drink? bc if they do it must have just magically appeared. well... magic to some, science to others... whistling.gif wink.gif

they died because there was no water to drink, give to the animals, or irrigate crops

the rains finally came north again but that didnt stop the problem. your clueless

i guess i have to bring you from point A to B to C... how disappointing.

1. you think water is a very limited resource and that we could possibly run out someday
2. people in ethiopia died because of a drought
3. you think this is confirmation of #1

so what you're saying sure sounds true (sorta) from an ethopian's point of view. but we're talking about the total amount of freshwater available on this planet, not in one miniscule portion of it. just because one portion of the earth recieves more water than another doesn't mean the resource as a whole is drying up and we're all gonna die. the only thing your little ethiopian story does is show us how natural selection works.

when theres not enough water on the earth to supply the population how does that mean theres plenty of water?

soooooooo when severe droughts happen, sometimes happen for decades, people just like freeze in time and theres no global impact and when things change it just goes back to the way it was?

lubbock gets it's water from the ogallala aquifer along with seven other states and i know for a fact that we're using up all the fresh water in the aquifer faster than it's replenished, it will run out at some point

quote from the ogallala aquifer wikipedia entry:

QUOTE
During the early years, this source of water was thought to be inexhaustible, and its hydrology a mystery. However, because the rate of extraction exceeds the rate of recharge, water level elevations are decreasing. At some places the water table was measured to drop more than five feet (1.5 m) per year at the time of maximum extraction. In extreme cases, the deepening of wells was required to reach the steadily falling water table; and it has even been drained (dewatered) in some places such as Northern Texas. Today, water is being extracted at rates exceeding one hundred times the natural replacement rate.

Impala the rain doesn't replenish the aquifers with each rain. We are taking out of the aquifers far more than what's going back in and the aquifers are our main source for fresh water.

DO YOU UNDERSTAND THAT?!

according the USGS, there's 332,500,000 cubic miles of water total on our planet. 0.3% of which is useable by humans. this equates to 997,500 cubic miles of fresh water. which equates to:
1,098,364,347,150,000,000 gallons.

according to the chart above, texas uses roughly 10 billion gallons of water a day.

so the number above is sufficient to support 10,983,643.4715 days of texas' water use. roughly 300,000 years of usage. given a nice round figure of 8 billion people on the planet and 23 million texans, that's roughly 347 texas' worth of people. so through this admittedly crude method, we have 864.55 years worth of water. the interesting part is, this whole calculation is from one standing amount of water, and assuming it never replenishes itself. which it most certainly does and science tells us it's been happening for billions of years. beside that fact that 864 years from now we'll probably be creating water from empty space or some crazy shit.

and with that i'm headed home. i think i'll dump the old cup of water in my truck on the ground lancifer.gif
