Alright, I'm in the market for an mp3 player to buy as a gift for someone. I need some suggestions. I have been out of the mp3 player game for about a year so now Im a little lost. First off, I thought harddrive based mp3 players were better than flash; however, after visiting a few sites, it seems as if they are converting back to flash memory??? I dont know. Im so lost. Also, I dont want to spend over $200. Finally, I absolutely detest iTunes, and since Im the one that is going to be loading the music for a while, I refuse to buy an iPod because I refuse to use iTunes. So, please give me some suggestions on mp3 player brands, whether I should go harddrive or flash, etc. I need to buy the gift Friday so I would like to get some good suggestions going so that I can read consumer reports and product analyses before I buy. Thanks for your help!

zunes are icky, and waay too big. What size storage are we looking at? Personal jukebox or just "jogging tunes"... ie, if you WERE to buy an ipod, would you be going for the nano or the "classic", storage-wise. Also, is video/wifi a nessecity? what kind of battery life are you looking for, etc.

OK as far as size: its the guy that was in the car accident, and he gets bored during the day so it doesn't need to be super small for jogging because thats not really an option for him right now. In like a year it will be, though, so I don't know if I should consider that when buying him one.

I don't know about video compatibility either. I mean, he watches TV a lot at home so I don't think he really needs that.... he just wants the music. It would be kind of neat though to be able to put some movies on there for him. *shrug*

I want excellent battery life and something that doesn't have to be charged using a computer like the iPods do from what I have heard. He doesn't have a computer at his parents' house right now.

Storage size is my big "i don't know." I mean, I would want something with a ton of storage, but does he really need it? I would say he definitely doesn't need more than 20 gigs; however, I also don't want to get him something with only 2 or 4 gigs. I would say 8 gigs at the least.

My boyfriend. His birthday is Monday. He was in a horrible car accident 3 months ago where he shattered his L5 in his lower back, ruptured his bladder, and broke some ribs. He is to have constant bed rest until the end of October because his back cannot hold his body weight right now. The most he can get up for is like 30 minutes, but he has to be in bed at least 21 hours a day according to the doctors. He gets bored!

oh and the Audi thing is his name.... he has some long Spanish name that is hard to pronounce so everyone calls him Audi.

I'd go with one by Creative or maybe Samsung. I'm not a big Zune fan, but different strokes for different folks.

I dated him 5 years ago and off and on since then. I wont say whether or not we were dating before the accident because cry baby Will will come in here and start bitching about how I supposedly was unfaithful to him and blah blah blah.

I wholeheartedly recommend the Zune. I have never had a single problem with it. And while it is bulky and and what not, I still don't mind. The screen is much larger than the iPod and has better quality of pictures/movies (from what I've seen). I only have one complaint: I can't jump to artist/album when I randomly come across a song I like. I have to go to the Artist/Album category and find it from there. Quicklist = Friend

If the Zune wasn't so damn big, I'd reccommend it as well. However, the creatives (just don't get anything with the name "micro" in it) are good buys as well, and If you feel like going all out, an Archos is pretty damn good to, plus some of them have wifi, browsers, touchscreens, etc etc etc.

Fyi, you can charge iPods through a wall outlet too.

Not that I'm advocating buying one.

I'd go with the creative one. You have to use a usb port to charge the zune (lame).

Yep, you're the only woman I know that doesn't cheat.

Also, a quick google search just revealed you can buy an AC adapter for your Zune.

Get the zune and the zune adapter. Also, get the special earbuds as the soudn quality is 10x better.

The reason I say to get the adapter is it gets a better charge. When I had it plugged into my computer I'd get about 10-15 hours of battery life. When I'd plug it into the wall outlet I'd get anywhere between 20-25.

Ive been reading user reviews on Amazon regarding the SanDisk SDMX4-4096 Sansa e260 4 GB MP3 Player with SD Expansion Slot.... Im kinda liking what Im reading. Anyone have any thoughts on going SanDisk? Im kinda hesitant as I dont really know how they rate on performance and durability?

i think that, unless this person has looked around and knows for a fact that ipods are pieces of crap and would never themselves buy one, they are going to be horribly disappointed when they see that it's not an ipod, even if you get them a much better mp3 player (like a new 16gb creative zen when they were expecting a shuffle/nano)

When I was in the Apple Store last night buying my iPhone, there were like 6 people behind me buying those new nanos. To me, theyre pretty cheap...the 4 gig one being 150 bucks. And they play video, right?

lolz

My sister has a new Nano. The thing is not that. I use 3gp to convert movies to put on it for her, they come out to like 300mb a piece. It has this cool movie trivia game. Has anyone ever used the Best Buy brand mp3/video players? Some of them now have bluetooth. They're pretty cheap too.

I got an ipod in December (it was free, I probably would've bought something else) and haven't used it at all except for loading a bit of music. laugh.gif

Maybe with el tax refund I can finally get an ipod-compatible radio in my car (what I have now is just the stock radio) and use it with that. Beats burning CDs.

I pissed off a gay guy by asking him if he considered himself a bear.

I've owned the Dell DJ, Microsoft Zune and Sony NW-S. I have to say it depends what you use it for. The sony lasted forever on a charge, was small but only 1 gb. The DJ and the Zune were both hd based and last 8 hours top. I've messed around with an I-Pod and have to say they have the best interface. The Zune doesn't have a good song search function.

Yeah, not all guys are cool with the bear identity...I know myself I didnt embrace it until about 2 years ago. I used to be offended when friends would call me one.

On topic: I've had several iPods....I prefer those compared to any other MP3 players that I've owned. Having to use iTunes is a slight tradeoff, but there are always work-arounds so you dont HAVE to use iTunes.

The Zune has some nice features, but I just dont know if I would buy a Microsoft product.
As for Dell, lots of people swear by them, but I've just never had GREAT experience with them.

just re-using this thread:

What are some good in-ear, with clip over the ear headphones? I lost the pads to my old ones and want to get a new pair.

They're not clip-on, but the JVC Marshmallows are pretty comfortable and don't fall out too easily.

Skull Candy earphones sound great. And they have a cool name too. Cause it has "Candy" in it.
