that polarizing, hateful, ignorant bigot got to live 3x...4x longer than many truly good christians I know...
he is the opposite of what a christian should aspire for. I suck at being a good christian, but at least I know it. 73 years is more than he deserved. so...well...cya! |

I don't know what response you expected to get. This guy wasn't exactly a beacon of light. When bigots like this die it's only natural for people to celebrate. Just like when Al Sharpton goes. I'm gonna have a cookout.

Just to play devil's advocate: You seem like a very conservative person (understatement), what were your sentiments when Saddam was hung. What about when Iraqi insurgents are killed by our troops? So you're comparing Saddam and Iraqi insurgents to Jerry Falwell. People who are mass murderers vs someone who just says some stuff some people don't agree with. I understand where you're coming from, and yes I am glad that Saddam recieved the punishment he did, and glad our troops are killing the enemy, rather than the enemy killing them. I'm not really sure what being conservative has to do with any of it though, unless you're assuming liberals weren't happy to see Saddam go, or insurgents killed (which actually could be fairly questionable, considering their actions in congress so far). Especially considering that all over the media, even people who were fierce opponents of Falwell, had decent sentiments of him and had thoughts and/or prayers for his family. The only real place I've seen the pointless hatred was on here, or other places of insignificant hatred and fear of Christianity. Do I agree with what the man had to say? No, but I think it's pretty childish and of poor taste to pay the man "good riddance". |

No, but I think it's pretty childish and of poor taste to pay the man "good riddance". Like I said, playing devil's advocate. I think it's in poor taste to cheer on another person's death. Even if they were not a good human being, they leave behind family members and people that cared for them that mourn the loss. I really do not care at all for Falwell, Jackson, Sharpton and their ilk, as I see them mostly as opportunistic sharks that use religion (and race for Jackson and Sharpton) to put themselves in a place of celebrity and power. If people want to cheer on the death of someone, that's their right to be tactless. PS: I myself hold mostly conservative viewpoints, so the conservative thing isn't a jab, just an observation. With their support of the war and death penalty, conservatives are more likely to approve of any execution, especially Saddam's. -------------------- LANCE IS PRO-CENSORSHIP! I'm not going to mourn his loss for his family. I don't know his family. Quite frankly, I don't care about his family. The only time I would feel a loss is if it was close to me. I know that sounds quite assholish and selfish but after all...it's Jerry Falwell. He's up there on my most hated list next to Westboro Baptist Church. You can play the Christian card and talk about how he unified Christians into one force...but the guy wasn't exactly a model Christian. Just because he has the title of Reverend or Pastor in front of his name doesn't make him infallible or almighty. He preached a lot of hate in his day right up there with other crazy fundamentalists. And before you say he wasn't a fundamentalist he certainly was in his heyday.
I mainly have a huge beef with this guy because of the production of the Clinton Chronicles. My parents watched that shit for weeks on end and wouldn't stop talking about it. Investigations determined most of the allegations in the videos to be false. Just more shitty fundie propoganda. -------------------- "Ah, y'know it's funny, these people they go to sleep, they think everything's fine, everything's good. They wake up the next day and they're on fire."

My use of the phrase "good riddance" is not really an expression of celebration as much as it is a statement of relief. My contempt for Jerry Falwell does not reflect any larger ill will toward the greater Christian community, although he does give Christianity a bad name. This man constantly preached hateful and judgmental things, and I can not fathom any reason to be saddened over his death. In fact, wishing him a "good riddance" is too lenient.

nobody said you guys had to be saddened, or mourn the man. I guess it just boils down to a simple disagreement. I feel that it's in pretty poor taste to bid someone who's just died "good riddance" just because you didn't agree with what they had to say. while some of you feel that's not in bad taste at all.

that's fine that you didn't like the man. there is a difference between not liking someone and spitting on their grave Um, no there's not. If he were alive I'd tell him he was a cock to his face. But since that's just a pile of worms I can't so I'll spit on his grave. Funny link. http://www.crooksandliars.com/2007/05/17/h...hannity-colmes/ |

I think the way people have acted (not just on here) about the death of someone that they dislike shows the main disconnect between the left and right.
I know that there are some sick people who claim to be on the right (Westboro Baptist Church) but for the most part you would never see a conservative cry out "woo hoo! Dawkins is dead!" or "Yes! I am so glad Pelosi was killed in car crash!" Granted, I do not expect a tear to be shed for Pelosi but you catch my drift. -------------------- "There is a level of cowardice lower than that of the conformist: that of the fashionable non-conformist." |

I know, but I guess I just wanted to know why people on here have the opinion they do of him instead of having to page through the first 3 pages of Jerry Falwell on google because all the articles will involve his death. pretty much one of the biggest religious bigots there was. Said 9/11 was god's punishment on the gays, or something like that, and a bunch of jackassery along those lines. Same thing for katrina. -------------------- WAIT. I'm not finished.

Who me? I'm just fanning the flames, I think I had a party when Saddam was hung and I'd like to see all of those Westboro folks shot in the face by gays after they make them perform fellatio. hahahahaha -------------------- "Ah, y'know it's funny, these people they go to sleep, they think everything's fine, everything's good. i'll throw my own party when someone finally ends up bombing the westboro church. it would have to be a sodomy party just to rub it in their faces and i don't know if you want that or if you'd have any attendees -------------------- "Ah, y'know it's funny, these people they go to sleep, they think everything's fine, everything's good. There's a difference between disagreeing with something politically and hating someone who spews hate his entire life. And I don't think this is a left/right issue. I guarantee you plenty of right wingers will be celebrating when Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton die even if it's not you personally. -------------------- Holy shit, pebkac, you're awesome!
