Depictions of smoking in movies will now be a factor when deciding what a film's rating will be, possibly making a PG-13 movie R-rated, the Motion Picture Association of America said yesterday. The policy affects only new movies.

Along with violence, depictions of sex, adult language and other content considerations, ratings organizations will examine new releases to determine if they glamorize smoking or if it is pervasive through the films, even among adults. Underage smoking has always been considered when rating a film.

may sound dumb on the surface, but it makes sense, we're talking about the difference between allowing 13 yr olds & 17 year olds into a movie.

really the whole rating system needs to be revamped though. we'll have some movie that's barely rated R because of some smoking or other adult only activity, then we'll have some uber gore slasher movie with several softcore pr0n scenes rated in the same category. I think G, PG & PG-13 seem to be correct, but R should be split up into a couple of categories. or do how the premium movie channels do, show something like a ALNV (Adult situations, Language, Nudity, Violence) but with a little more detail.

Ok so after blabbing, that works pretty well, could do like a ALNV rating for each movie and do away with the rest... somethin like letter/number, A0L0N0V0 for the bambi 7, and A5L5N5V5 for the latest psychopath killer slasher bloody pot smoking alcoholic pr0n thriller.

I don't see a problem with the R rating. Kids aren't supposed to be getting into those if it's a little smoking or "some uber gore slasher movie with several softcore pr0n scenes" without a parent present. If the parents are letting them watch it, then they feel their child is mature enough to handle it or just a bad parent. If the theatre is letting them by, then shame on them, but I doubt there's a regulatory agency for it like there is for underage drinking.

I wish a theatre chain would grow some balls and not restrict entrance to movies based on rating. The 17+ for R movies is not a legal requirement, but a purely voluntary practice.

i heard about some uber theater in chicago that has an awesome atmoshpere, either 18 or 21 and up, serving restaurant style food & drinks (alcohol too) and having large recliner sized chairs and stuff. i would pay much more for a regular ticket if it meant there wouldn't be stupid kids and there'd be ultra comfortable seating, with the option for food and drinks.

one of my biggest pet peeves at movies is people who bring babies. especially to movies like spiderman.

I'm perhaps biased because I was watching R flicks by the time I was 6 or so, with some restrictions from my parents (basically they didn't care about violence or language, but monitored the sexual content of what I watched). By the time I was a teen, my parents would've given the go-ahead for just about any rated-R movie I wanted to watch, but then you've got the whole requisite parental accompaniment bit at the theatres. Bit annoying, that.

Please dont start on this subject with me...seriously. Im one to believe that kids should maintain their innocense as long as possible. I wouldnt let my kids watch shows on tv that are suggestive. Its easy to monitor what kids watch on tv at home, but if I drop my 15 year old off at the movies with her friend, I dont want her watching Eyes Wide Shut.

No I did not. The only Rated R movie I saw in theatres before I was 17 was The Edge and my mom took me to see that. Youre also talking to the same person who didnt cuss at all until I moved to college... I was probably the most innocent teenager ever until I moved to college. I liked my innocence. I hung out at church 5-6 days a week, went to a private baptist school, and never went out with friends outside of church because I stayed at home and helped my mom with my brother.

One of the reasons I see R rated movies is so I don't have to deal with damn teenies. I often will opt out of seeing a particular movie at the theater because it isn't R rated. So I'm glad we're about to get a bunch more R rated movies.

I saw many a rated R movie when I was under 17. My parents even took me to see Howard Stern's Private Parts in theaters.
I don't think I'm some morally f-ed up guy, but hey people can think what they want.

Sounds like the Movie Grille that has a few locations in Dallas. I think they allow kids, but you sit down in comfortable reclining computer chairs with a long table in front of you and can order food and drinks. It's pretty nice being able to drink beer and watch the movie. The drawback is that you have servers running around in there so it can be a distraction.

actually that depends on the state, i think something like 6 or 7 states actually do have laws to that effect. Not that it would matter.


edit: and yeah, studio movie grill is some sweet shit, even if half the servers (at the Plano location) are addicted to heroin and the drinks cost $5-9 a pop, not to mention food costing around $13 on top of a $9 ticket. The trick is to find coupons -- my girlfriend's mom somehow has the inside track on them, and has a giant sheet of 'em every 6 months.

The Plano location also shows sports (ie, hockey and football games) in HD on their screens too.
