i remember the megamillions jackpot was up to 5 or 6 hundred million one time and 100 or so people at a company in the northeast who pooled their money together won it... so 355 is not the biggest in history

how about this math

$370,000,000

my chances of winning = 1 in 175,711,579
your chances of winning = 0

perhaps you'd miss the $1. or perhaps you could tell us where that $1 could be spent otherwise, that makes a large impact on your life. it doesn't really impact my financial success to blow $1 per week. especially considering the possible (however improbable) impact that $1 could have on me, and lots of my closest friends & family for the rest of their lives, and every generation that comes after all of those people. besides the fact that the $1 also goes into state funds for education. and besides the fact that every now and then, i win my $2-7 back from matching 3 numbers or the mega ball. the odds of winning $2 are 1 in 40, and on up from there.

you're the math guy right??

56 possible numbers, pick 5 no repeats, pick 1 in 46

56!46 / (5!51!) = 56x55x54x53x52x46/5x4x3x2 = 175,711,536 combinations

You have to win the megaball without getting anyother number. so it's not just 1 in 46... you still have to take in to account the other 5 balls.

Bingo, to win the $2 prize by just matching the powerball, you have match 5 of 51 numbers, not 56. To do that you have 2,349,060 chances out of 175,711,536.
So, you take 175,711,536/2,349,060. Which makes your chances to win, 1 out of 74.8.

edit: fixed glaring sloppy errors from quickly posting at work.

Yep. Your chances of matching the megaball and 0 or more of the other 5 balls is 1:46.

Megaball + identically 0 other balls = 51C5:56C5*46C1 =1:74.8.

your chances of winning $2 are 1 in 46.

if you match all 6, you still win $2

You are retarded.
It's not just getting one number out of 46... you also have to get the first 5 numbers wrong.

It's 1 in 75

The original question was what was the odds on just winning $2

Original "What are the odds to win the $2 prize by just matching 1 of the 46?"

The money is not broken up and itemised it's all or nothing. If someone won they would not say they won $2 plus $3 plus $7 plus $10 ect.

your chances of winning $2 are 1 in 46.

if you match all 6, you still win $2

practical thinking people, it's not a riddle.

Your odds of winning exactly $2 (no more, no less) are ~ 1 in 75. Your odds of winning at least $2 are 1 in 40.

Shows how often I play the lotto. My start date is april 9th, did you get an offer spect?

Not ONLY did I get an offer, 15 minutes after I got off the phone with that place, I got an email asking me to come in to interview for a job I applied for 3 weeks ago. Apparently they're down to considering just me and one other person. INSANITY.

Yep, you are definitely retarded. $2 is the minimum prize you can win. So with your logic, as long as you win something, you win that original $2 also.

But....
You have 1 chance to match 5 of the 56 and 1 of the 46.
You have 45 chances to match 5 of the 56 and 0 of the 46.
You have 255 chances to match 4 of the 56 and 1 of the 46.
You have 11,475 chances to match 4 of the 56 and 0 of the 46.
You have 12,750 chances to match 3 of the 56 and 1 of the 46.
You have 573,750 chances to match 3 of the 56 and 0 of the 46.
You have 208,250 chances to match 2 of the 56 and 1 of the 46.
You have 1,249,500 chances to match 1 of the 56 and 1 of the 46.
you have 2,349,060 chances to match 0 of the 56 and 1 of the 46.

So, we now take (1 + 45 + 255 + 11,475 + 12,750 + 573,750 + 208,250 + 1,249,500, + 2,349,060)/175,711,536 =.....
Not 1 out of 46 dumbass.

Its about 1 out of 40. Actually its about 1 out of 39.88833271 if you want to be more accurate.

Edit: Damn, Spec beat me to it, but this took a while to type.

i think his logic was that the odds of winning exactly $2 are 1:46
because the only way to win the $2 prize is to get only the megaball
of which there are 46 options, he just forgot to count the odds of
getting five losing non-mega balls.

Payout = $2
COMBIN(5,0) = 1. COMBIN(51,5) = 2,349,060. COMBIN(1,1) = 1. COMBIN(5,0) x COMBIN(51,5) x COMBIN(1,1) = 2,349,060. 2,349,060/175,711,536 = 0.0133688433524 or 1:74.80.

$2 or more

1 + 45 + 255 + 11,475 + 12,750 + 573,750 + 208,250 + 1,249,500 + 2,349,060 = 4,405,086 /175,711,536 = 0.0250699874367 1/0.0250699874367 = 1:39.89

i know how to do the calculation you losers. i was the one that pasted the damn combination calculation. it's semantics is all you're arguing about, except your semantics make no god damn sense. your chances of winning at least $2 is 1 in 46, no one gives a shit what your chances are of winning exactly $2. it's like wanting to know the odds of getting a blackjack with a king and an ace.

and keep calling me retarded all you want, if you win more than $2, you still fucking won $2.

Boosty's fucken drizzle off a bottle of bacizzle
All these trizzles try to get me in the frizzle

Shake your booty baby, it's lookin' alright
