I was reading one of my homeboy Low's articles and tried to post a reply, only to find out it was deleted. That shit is wack.

It was posted in Entertainment, where I see no rules posted. The off topic rules are as follows:

Official Rules for Off-Topic

Not too hard here
No NSFW (not safe for work) images in your posts. Link them instead and note them as NSFW
Example:

Pretty much everything else goes. Keep it cool & PM me or a global mod if you have any problems/questions/suggestions/etc.

wtf... people bitched about TTULow's threads and now that we're DOING something about it, people are bitching about THAT? He's been told many, MANY times to follow the rules (both in PM and via other means) and has specifically said that he's not going to follow them. Fuck that. The rules aren't unreasonable, the rules aren't hard, he's just trying to be an asshole and a dipshit by ignoring them.

These boards have seen very light moderation since the restart... yes, more moderation than before, but still VERY light compared to most boards. We talk about a lot of stuff behind the scenes to make sure that nobody is overstepping their boundaries by deleting threads or whatnot.

my point is there is 3 general mods and additional specific forum mods for a total of 10 mods.

there is what, 30 "active" members on this forum? most forums you are thinking of have a much smaller mod:user ratio. so what if he doesnt post a link and put what the news story said in quotes? if its posted like that take it like that, with a grain of salt and less credible then someone who links the direct article. he isnt posting trannys or someshit in the otherwise work safe forums, so at worst its causing you 15seconds of delay to google the article.

I agree that having 13 mods is excessive. However, it doesn't make the site "professional", nor does it necessarily mean that it's over-moderated.

We based the news article rules partially on the bazillion complaints that people had made before about TTULow's posting habits. Some of the mods just wanted to ignore low's threads, but Lance asked us to delete his threads if he violated the rules. Not the mods... LANCE.

So if you wanna bitch about us enforcing the rules, take it up with Lance. He's the one who made that call.

And Jim doesn't come and post to "defend" me any more than you post to "defend" Jessica, Will. It may appear like that, but that's not the case.

We do have a lot of mods, but most of them do little to nothing because they haven't had to. I don't think there's been a problem with too many mods so far.

i probably shouldnt be commenting, since i honestly havent read all the damn rules of each forum (who has?).

it seems mods are way too move and delete happy - and yes, this includes my girlfriend, who i got pissed at for deleting one of my posts. mods have already gotten in turf wars over other mods moving stuff in and out of their forums.

I agree with Will on every forum not having to have it's own rules thread. I didn't add one to Health & Fitness because it's pretty self-explanatory and it goes with the general rules.

Well... I think most of that happened right at the beginning of the restart (except for deleting low's threads). I haven't noticed many moves/deletes in the last few days and we're actually talking about things in the moderator's forum before doing something questionable.

oh, and additionally: yes, i agree the old board had problems. i agree it needed fixing. but the wrong things are being fixed. honestly, who gives a shit if an occasional thread is in the wrong place? and who cares if an occasional nsfw pic is posted, other than it might get you in trouble for slacking off at work? techsans has never been a "safe for work" site, so why start trying to make it one now?

the problem wasnt any of those things, it stuff like dipshit forsaken starting 75 threads with one video each in em. stuff like greg and zetec coming in to threads with one word replies to up their postcount

itd be nice to find a happy medium between the old board and the new board.

in no woody im not just whining, these are valid complaints. ive enjoyed the board for three years, and now its pretty much sucks due to various things. it isnt as fun as it once was

I have no need to "defend" Christine, there's no real point in doing so. She can take care of herself, she's a big girl.

What I do have to say is this: The rules at Techsans are very, very laid back. I mean, seriously. And they're easy to follow. If you don't follow them, you'll get your posts deleted, thread deleted, moved, and what not. That's simple. Follow the rules and you won't have it done to you. If you can't take the time to read them and then you start bitching about them I have this to say: Shut the fuck up.

Oh, and like I tell the people at the forums I admin, if you don't like the rules, you don't have to stay.

So TTULow can't post a thread without a source, but Forsaken can have an Avatar with clitoral stimulation in it?

Ok, let me address your concerns one at a time.

QUOTE
honestly, who gives a shit if an occasional thread is in the wrong place? and who cares if an occasional nsfw pic is posted, other than it might get you in trouble for slacking off at work? techsans has never been a "safe for work" site, so why start trying to make it one now?

Well, actually, a lot of people care. There were several complaints, even back when I was first a mod, about NSFW pics showing up in random threads. A lot of people read Techsans while at work... I like to browse while eating lunch at my desk, but I don't want to see a pic of someone's dick in the middle of asdf.

QUOTE
the problem wasnt any of those things, it stuff like dipshit forsaken starting 75 threads with one video each in em. stuff like greg and zetec coming in to threads with one word replies to up their postcount

And now, if Brandon starts several video threads, we'll merge them into one. We have a policy in place to merge TTULow's rapper threads into a single thread too... that is, if he'd ever post them right.

QUOTE
itd be nice to find a happy medium between the old board and the new board.

We're trying. Most of the mods here are new to modding and it takes time to figure out which rules are good and which are bunk. Most of the rules in place now stem from complaints that people have made in the past. If we get a lot of complaints about a specific rule, we'll consider changing it. But it takes time. Techsans can't become perfect overnight.

And JRock, I'm sorry that I called you a dumbass. I got frustrated when I saw 12 threads by TTULow2 in /dev/null (8 of which were the same thread re-posted) and then saw you complaining about us deleting them.

but i might be wrong and all the people that used to frequent these boards that say they now loathe it were probly just joshing with me. those kidders!

Uh, what? I don't remember myself ever causing anyone to leave. I mean, I came in September of '04 and the decline didn't start 'til about February or so of '05. It sure did take them a long, long time to decide that jackasses like me were reason enough to leave this forum. Maybe it was because of other reasons? Hmmm, I'm not sure, though.

Sure, I pissed people off but did they leave because of it? I don't think so.

I think we need to scrap the local mods and just keep the global ones. Three or four people are plenty of people to make sure stupid shit doesn't happen.

I think people are just being anti-authority because they can be, not because they want the random three guys sucking each other off pictures back in every thread, or reading an interesting topic to only be blinded by a girl shitting on herself in a tub.

I personally feel though that links to sources shouldn't be required. Yeah, it's annoying, but who gives a shit.

here's an idea: how about a stickied thread (in off topic, since its the most active forum) explaining each mod decision. i believe a WOW thread was deleted or merged a few weeks ago? just add a note to the explanationthread stating "new WOW thread moved to entertainment and merged with existing WOW thread"

i knew why it was moved, since jessica is my gf. but im sure most people had no idea and a few got pissed off. a simple note explaining why im sure would shut most people up. most of the time people get mad cause no explanation is given. as to why their thread or post was moved/deleted

Maybe not a bad idea... we have a similar thread in the mods-only forum, but having something like that publically available might quiet some people.

Oh, Internet.

Nobody really comes here expecting up to date CNN news quality reporting here, i don't really give a shit if he does or does not post a link. Like Hodge said before just take his articles with less seriousness than other articles or if you're feeling really OCD you can just post a link for him.

And i kinda agree that we dont need all of these mods. Hell, i'll give away my modship if it means we go back to having just lance and maybe one or two people

or how about this:

i'm sure the mods have better things to do than read through every thread and make sure there are no nsfw pics posted. i know if i was a mod, i wouldn't want to do that.

how about a strike policy against people who post nsfw pics? the first offense you get a warning (since i'm sure there are some people who haven't read the rules). second offense gets you a week's banning. third offense gets you banned for a month.

if the objective is to make the boards a better place, why not?

i know that a mod's job description means fixing board problems, but nothing is fixed in the grand scheme of things if no one is following the new rules. it just means the board is more heavily moderated, and mods have to do more additional work that could easily be avoided in the first place. why not make the general posters accountable for their actions?

fixing the problems as they happen is not a long term solution, eliminating the problems before they happen is

ok first of all...to the people who are saying these boards shouldnt be SFW anyway.. look, boards change, like the members on them. when this board first started a few years ago, mostly ALL of us were students (mainly younger undergrads). now look. many of us have graduated, with the rest in their latter undergrad studies and grad studies. the membership on this board has aged dramaticallay, and because of that, MANY more people have jobs and view this site at work. that's just common sense.

on the mods.. yeah most of us don't really even do much. i made a rules thread in NPR and havent really done anything else. i wouldnt care if we just had a few global mods, and i actually kind of like what Will said about warnings. we used to have those with RAR because i remember i actually got warned once. having things like that actually prevents douchebags and trolls from being pests. but either way its not up to me, and i dont care all that much.

i probably shouldnt be commenting, since i honestly havent read all the damn rules of each forum (who has?).

it seems mods are way too move and delete happy - and yes, this includes my girlfriend, who i got pissed at for deleting one of my posts. mods have already gotten in turf wars over other mods moving stuff in and out of their forums.

hmm you never told me it pissed you off. In fact, you posted the same thing several times to cause me work, silly boy. I deleted everything to close that thread and I created another thread about the rules that could be spammed in. I only deleted at the beginning and I told people I was deleting for practice to know how. Since then, I havent touched A THING. It will continue to remain that way. NOTHING will be touched in LRAR by me.

I dont care much whether NSFW pics are linked because I change my board settings to not show avatars, sigs, and pics when Im at work or visiting home. Should they be linked? yeah but dont bitch if you are at work and browsing it. just change the settings.

Low's threads: leave them alone if they are in entertainment or off topic and there is no source. I cant stand his threads so I dont read them...as simple as that.

maybe if everyone knew what was in the dev/null forum:

21 TTULow2
2 Will
1 koreanp1e
1 JRock
1 Dogmeat
1 nickluto

I can kind of see where the problem lies. and as far as the B/S/T forum goes, all of done is remove comments that don't have to do with the product being sold.

The other one was split off from somebody's rules thread (maybe Jessica's?). It shows up as being "your" thread because the first post split off was yours.

I guess if I try to recap what TTULow's deleted news article says it gets deleted? I sited him as my source, so what's wrong with that?

And if nobody saw the thread I'm talking about, he posted a news article about Three 6 Mafia performing on the Academy Awards Sunday night and at the bottom it said "Source: The internet"

It was great so when I went to compliment him on his source it wouldn't let me post because it was already deleted.

It seems to me that most of the people bitching about the mods seem to be upset that they aren't mods themselves. If you actually look at the amount of modding going on, with the exception of TTULow2's threads, it's next to none. I know I've done nothing but pin topics in the computes section, the only place I have authority. Same goes (i'm sure) for the health/fitness, LRAR, Academics, Sports, Local/Campus Events, Pro sports doesn't even HAVE a mod... so if you look at it, really the only mods that matter are the 3 global mods (not an unreasonable number) and the off-topic, News, and entertainment mods. (3 more mods, 1 per forum to assist when a Global mod isn't around.)

so really you have like 3 global mods, not unreasonable, and 3 regular mods that typically have anything to do.

I hardly think that's unreasonable. Quit whining.

edit: also, having individual forum mods makes it easier on the global mods because the global mods don't have to read EVERY post made on the entire forum to check them, it's a lot easier for the local mods to just read the new posts in their own forums.

In my time as a mod and admin (about 2 years total), I've probably only seen 2 "reported" posts. Sure, if we hyped the report button, people MIGHT use it, but I dunno.

Yeah, Techsans has more mods than it needs. But if 1) they don't abuse their power and 2) there aren't power struggles as a result, does it really matter? Most of that which happened in the first few days of people being mods has gotten ironed out, either behind the scenes or otherwise.

i think it was gay when every moderator came out with their own "RULES" thread.

you guys are fucking idiots.

its the goddamn internet, if you need to "claim" this space to define your life, you need to get laid. eat shit and suck my dick !

last i checked, you're posting here, so you're no better then the rest of us. quit whining like a three-year old and move on.

i probably shouldnt be commenting, since i honestly havent read all the damn rules of each forum (who has?).

it seems mods are way too move and delete happy - and yes, this includes my girlfriend, who i got pissed at for deleting one of my posts. mods have already gotten in turf wars over other mods moving stuff in and out of their forums.

thats because the mods are ALL female. and we know how territorial females are

just from past experience (on other boards and on this one in particular) its always been good to have fewer mods that an excessive number. and for just over 100 posters less than half who post regularly there shouldnt be 'turf wars' or even discussions like this that hold any merit (yes people are always going to bitch but theres a valid point somewhere in this one)

and yeah giving modship to anyone who asked for it - way to go lance laugh.gif

i dont know if a purgatory exists on this new board or not but .... thats a side discussion
i just hope when the mods do mod they state when where and why in the post that has been editied and dont ninja it

Can we have some voting system where a mod marks a thread to be put into dev/null and there is an hour period where anyone can vote on if the thread is to be removed or not. I do not think the boards can do that, but is there a way to put in your own code?

It took two weeks for people to overcomplicate a fucking messageboard with only so many active posters.

I vote everybody turns in their "mod" duties, and perhaps a silent voting system for 2 or 3 global mods to just keep the general rules in place (nsfw pics all over etc).

Or just keep the ones we have now. Whatever.

Everyone keeps complaining about too many mods even though only about 3 or 4 have really done anything, and I don't think the things they've done have been over the top.

Fuck people, find something else to bitch about. How about the weather, or just the dust, or lubbock traffic, or the tuition hike for next year.

4th and university- a mess

19th between indiana and quaker- wtf..@(*$^(@ Mess

slide near brownfield (last I checked) was down to one lane- UGH mess

quaker between like 17th and 25th- the worst mess in my opinion

Im sure there are other areas of town that are a complete fucking mess due to this poor idea for a freeway. and why they are naming it after a lesbian, ill never understand. I cant believe the old people of lubbock are letting them do this. I figured there would be a bigger controversy over the name of the freeway
