A guy at work is pimping this game saying when it comes out it could be a WoW killer. Supposedly will be a pretty sweet game coming out Q1 '07. Anyone heard about it?

i was just talking about vanguard. if "everyone" is saying vanguard is a ripoff of WoW i can see why. the interfaces are nearly identical. the quest givers & quests function exactly the same way. the time it takes you to level is just about exactly the same. the only fundamental difference i could see between the two is that vanguard attempts to do more of a "real" looking graphics vs WoW with a more animated kind of look. You'd think this would be good, except so far it looks like there wasn't much creativity put into the vanguard graphics (i.e. vanguard=very bland computer generated terrain vs wow=highly detailed well thought out landscapes).

i'll definitely keep it going and see how it gets at higher levels, but my first impression is... i've played the game before... when it was called WoW smile.gif

starting out swiping at a "horse fly" with a sword (and taking about 10-12 swings to kill one) didn't impress me much

Everything is a rip off.

WoW was a complete rip off of EQ, where they just made it 100x easier so anybody could play.

EQ was a rip off of Ultima Online to some

The whole genre is getting so played out - but who knows, somebody may come in and just do the same thing that the others did in the past - rip off the fun aspects and ideas of the previous king, and add things to make it more user friendly.

damn they need to work on the trees. im just tired of people, not saying you, saying vanguard is a ripoff of Wow since the people that are made EQ are making Vanguard. and yea, the only thing i really see the same is the actionbar, but i bet there are more that i dont know since i have not played Vanguard.

yeah this is probably true... i never played EQ or UO so I wouldn't have known. There are definitely certain aspects of these games you can't really consider a "copy". i mean, obviously characters are going to have hit points, levels, etc. what i meant was just how closely their interface and such matches WoWs. They're honestly nearly identical. i guess i'm just trying to report on the game as it's a new one that's been pretty highly touted. i just honestly haven't been impressed so far, especially with the (seemingly) lack of creativity as far as the art/quests/UI/fighting goes. on their website they say:
QUOTE
What is Sigil’s goal for Vanguard: Saga of Heroes?
Quite honestly, our goal is to make the next primiere massively multiplayer role-playing game.
(and yeah it's copy/pasted, they mis-spelled premiere)
i'm just saying it seems like they've got their work cut out for them if they feel they're going to accomplish this and eclipse WoW. WoW has 8 million subscribers and 2 years of polish & balancing, and if WoW players get on there and just feel like it's the same game, they won't have any reason to switch.

vanguard aside though.. in comparing to all the other MMOs, WoW must have done something right as they've just topped 8 million subscribers worldwide. part of it probably is the short term success helping the long term... i.e. because they've been on top for so long and make so much money, they can dump more back into development/art/gfx/programming/etc. another part is like Rocky said, they made it easier (at least for the lower levels), but imho they also kept the challenge at the higher levels. overall i attribute WoW's success simply to the way blizzard operates. they do what they want to do, not what all the gamers cry that they want. they've showed extremely high quality of pretty much every game they put out. every game they've released has won tons of awards, from the warcraft RTS, starcraft RTS, diablo series, and now WoW.

levels are not needed.

like you said, youve never played uo. that game had no levels. it was all based on skill points.

ok you know what i'm saying though... certain aspects of the games will be the same. star wars galaxies had no levels either.

so what aspects did you guys feel EQ ripped off from UO? and WoW from EQ? since you guys played them you'd know best.

yeah.. biggest problem with star wars galaxies was SOE, and that kinda sets off flags for this new vanguard game because SOE is hosting it.

Same concept and the same thing, just no actual levels. In most games you have to gain experience or "skill points" to obtain a new level.

EQ had an action bar, but it was on the side and not the bottom.

Hell, most of these MMORPGs are D&D knock-offs.

oh and i'll take more vanguard screenshots and post em... apparently when i set the gfx slider at "high performance" that meant "put every video setting to the lowest possible level".

i never played any of the pen & paper games, but well yeah duh i'd assume the video game would be much less involved, kinda like how movies tend to not be as intensive as their book counterparts. the book leaves the visual to the imagination

I found D&D immensley boring the few times I played, no offense brandon. I guess I would prefer to have a computer add/subtract hit points, add experience, tally skills... blah blah etc etc

I'd also argue that there are definitely a lot of computer games out there with a good plot/lore to them.

it's not for everybody. and there are times when i just can't get things interesting for a session or 2. fully aware of that. i think the size of the party we currently got going is about the maximum i can handle all at once. 10-11 people per session gets pretty nuts and each round takes forever.

its more apt to say vanguard is ripping off WoW in this case tho, and be correct.

vanguard in early beta's didnt look like it does now, and the game play wasnt the same. then microsoft snuck a focus group in, they thought the game was shit. microsoft realized the situation they were in, backed out and sold it back to sigil, now to try and recoup and make a profitible game, they blatantly are ripping stuff off from wow. the interface is just the most obvious thing.

WoW unfortunately is redefining mmo's, like it or not. they took a lot of what EQ and other mmo's had and polished/reused it. because of this new mmo's have to take what people like about WoW, polish that and reuse it adding whatever "new and amazing" system they can which another mmo will refine. unfortunately vanguard is best summed up with this video..
