I don't like bittorrent much because it ganks all of my bandwidth. Other than that, it's a fairly decent service.

It's no different than searching on a p2p network... you type what you're searching for and it brings it up for you... It's the same concept, you just aren't using a built in search engine throught out the network.

but the content each website you search on is different, in a peer to peer network all users' content is indexed for you to find, even in a pure peer to peer network like gnutella, in bittorrent all the content is broken up and dispersed among bittorrent websites.... that equals mega-gayness
bittorrent is just a protocol to transfer files, like ftp or tcp, it's not a true peer to peer network like everyone keeps confusing it as... now if some file sharing program software used the bittorrent protocol to transfer files over it's peer to peer network that would be fine and dandy, but until bittorrent is made into a true peer to peer network filesharing program it will continue to suck donkey balls |

It's distributed networking. Not having global database was the point... For someone who is so freakin' paranoid it's really weird for you to say you want a central repository. -------------------- "There is a level of cowardice lower than that of the conformist: that of the fashionable non-conformist." |

i don't want a central repository, which is why i like gnutella
all bittorrent does is break apart files and send them to you from many different sources, and it doesn't even use it's own protocol for file transfer, it uses ftp or http i could make a webpage with a huge list of shit and people can click the hyperlinks to download the stuff, that's basically what bittorrent is except it sends you the file chunks from different sources bittorrent is way over rated |

People have tried to mutate to share other things, and if you find the right torrent with the right seeds then you can theoretically download entire movies in minutes. The problem is the theoretical part. Bram Cohen has said multiple times before that bandwidth has to scale before BitTorrent can scale. -------------------- "There is a level of cowardice lower than that of the conformist: that of the fashionable non-conformist." |

furthermore, mininova is operated in the netherlands, where it's legal, it's been up for years, and even sent sony's lawyers a letter after a C&D order saying, "in case you haven't noticed, we're not in america. It is the opinions of the mininova staff and our lawyers that you should go fuck yourselves"

azureus is the best if your on linux or mac
but if your on windows µTorrent is the best one has almost all the same features as azureus but is only few hundred K and the memory footprint is more like 5-10mb while azureus has a 70mb+ memory footprint http://utorrent.com/ edit: fixed the url This post has been edited by zetec: Mar 5 2006, 06:44 PM -------------------- ~Clatto Verata Nicto

i've been meaning to check out utorrent for a while, but i feel warm and snug nestled in the busom of opensource, as well as all my plugins.
and memory footprint isn't a problem on this machine -------------------- WAIT. I'm not finished.
