hey, while we're at it, let's get rid of all the other modern technology that makes our lives easier than it was in the 1940's

i guess you missed the millions of articles i posted on here about how easy it is to hack electronic voting machines and change the votes, or how diebold and sequoia (the two main vendors) donate millions of dollars to republican party candidates... or the story about the old grandma who figured out how to hack the machines... or the memory card hack... or the research paper i wrote in school that listed all the main vulnerabilities... guess you like your elections rigged

is hacking those machines easier than "losing" or altering paper ballots?

Yes, especially in scale and mainly for two reasons.

1. A disgruntled programmer that works for one of the voting machine companies can insert hostile code to manipulate elections. This would affect elections on a wide scale across the nation. With paper ballots this is not a problem.

2. Paper ballot problems are usually localized in one small area or one county and carried out by someone on the staff. With electronic voting machines an external person can travel around to each county and change the votes with a thumb drive. Also all the machines use a modem to dial to a central server where the votes are sent. It's not to hard to intercept the packets between the voting machine and the central server or just attack the central server itself.

Any educated person can see paper ballots are 10 times more safe than electronic voting machines. EVMs introduce way too much complexity, chances for failure, and chances for security violations. Let's keep it simple, use paper ballots.

meh, to each his own. if you support creating more work for something that can be done with the push of a button, i respect that.

these paper ballots should also be printed in spanish so all the illegals can vote.

Um, so i would be uneducated to think that the system can be perfected and thus much more efficient than paper?

Or would it just be uneductated to think RIGHT NOW they aren't as safe as paper ballots? (i agree with the paper being more secure right now... save those damn hanging chads and confusingly voting for buchanen)

Yes, you would be uneducated to think the system can be perfected. Nothing is perfect, especially in the software world. Compare this to to copy protection... people will always find a way to break it. New vulnerabilities are discovered every day in all sorts of software products. Sign up for bugtrak, securityfocus, or CERT.

Anyone who thinks software can be perfected is a complete idiot. Anyone with any basic software engineering experience or who has ever taken a softare engineering class knows this. They tell you this on the first day in software engineering 101.

Maybe "perfected" was the wrong word.... but im pretty sure i didn't mean perfecting SOFTWARE. I more meant making the ability to cheat the system much harder than a percievable risk to it actually happening. Maybe more checks and balances, lower tech, securtiy measures at the booths, double checks, codes for each citizen while using so it is harder to duplicate a mass number of votes...

Im not talking perfecting anything (because paper ballots can't be perfected) but more just making it hard enough on multiple levels so that paper is just as likely to be abused. Some how i doubt paper is our only choice ever... but then again i AM uneducated on future abilities of electronic voting...

i understand where you're coming from, corruption on the inside is always a possibility, but think of all the software out there that's this sensitive. banks, credit card companies, stock exchange, military weapons control, air traffic control, utility grids, literally trillions of dollars rides on software. if this type of corruption was so rampant, we'd have a lot more problems than someone trying to rig an election. i personally would trust an electronic voting system more than i would a paper ballot, which has old machines and/or actual people counting them (people who are no doubt low paid and don't care about the voting process).
