Leach made a bad decision to not bring in todd.

Harrell is a piece of shit whore bag shit licker.

Woods could've won the game.

for once, i'm going to agree with jessica (or will, sometimes I don't know who is who)

harrell just isn't as good and so we're getting shut down earlier. It really seemed in years before, the middle of the season provided enough tape for other teams to see our gimmicks and then fuck us.

I miss the days of 70 points a game though.

wasn't harrell or leach's fault. when recievers get two hands on the ball and can't pull it in you don't win games.

Do you homosexuals not realize that not only did receivers drop balls, but - THE PASSES WERE SET UP TO GO TO SHITTY SHORT GAINS !

It's easy to talk about the gimmick offense - which it is - but don't neglect the fact that there was absolutely no deep threat shown. Everything was a sideline gain for 4 yards attempt. And when you pass 80% of the time, that kinda gets predictable.

most of the ones that were dropped were 15 yds+. one was where RJ had everyone beat and would have scored. short gains aren't shitty at all as long as you GET them. i'll take 5 yard complete passes all day long.

yeah, graham waiting around for seconds to try and find a guy to throw a deep pass to when there was an open guy standing right in front of him ready for a short gain

and when he did take the deep pass he threw it too high or too short

Here's what happened: Harrell threw like shit. One pass he threw it on the wrong side of Woods when he was like 5 yards away. He was also overthrowing the ball and leading the receivers into an asswhooping when they tried to catch it. A good example of that was when robert johnson got the shit knocked out of him because he was going head first for the ball because it was so overthrown. Also no one was picking up the rusher coming in from the blind side. Harrell got blind sided at least twice, resulting in two fumbles.

there were at least THREE times in the second half where a reciever got two hands on a ball and didn't catch it in 3rd/4th down situations.

i'll admit graham didn't have that great of a day, but you can't put it all on him (or leach)

For all of you guys calling for Leach to replace Harrell with Todd: get a grip.

Pretty much every quarterback, regardless of school or experience, has a bad game now and then. Harrell is a third-year sophomore quarterback who has only started three games. I'm not saying he was spectacular, far from it, but to dump this loss entirely on his shoulders is asinine and to call for Todd to replace him proves how little you know.

Keep in mind that Texas Tech threw 47 passes against TCU; nine of which hit the hands of their intended receivers and dropped. For all of you math majors out there, that's nearly 20%.

Are there problems that need to be solved? Sure, but to advocate firing Leach because he lost on the road to a favored team (TCU was favored by one at kick-off) is ludicrous considering how relatively successful he has been in his six years here.

I'd drop that shit too if I was being lead right into a fucking linebacker of safety. They might have hit their hands but the balls were floating and by the time they were going to catch them a lot of the time they were about to get slaughtered.

The problem is that this wasn't Harrell's first bad game. UTEP wasn't much better.

Other than that, I agree with everything you said.

If completing 40 of 52 passes (76.9%) for 376 yards and two touchdowns to just one interception off of a tipped pass is considered a bad game, I would very much like to know what it takes to be considered a good game.

Kingsbury or Cumbie numbers... wink.gif

A win is a win, we just looked like crap against UTEP, just like we did against TCU.

If this is Harrell's worst game of the season, I'll be happy.

TCU game it looked like they had taken Harrell off the streets and decided to make a homeless man, who's never touched a football, the quarterback.

Because we didn't improve after the UTEP game is a very very very bad sign for conference play this year.

You know. We can't really say whose fault it was.

Harrell acted like he just discovered how to throw a ball and our recievers all buttered up before the game. I honestly don't know. We weren't out there to play football. We were there to try and look good and failed miserably in the process.

Aaron do you not think that Todd has a stronger arm and may be able to make more of the longer plays. From what I have seen TCu may have been an off-day but it just seems like GH doesn't have much arm stregnth.

Yeah. The recievers dropped some easy catches, but I think they're used to having the football flying directly towards them...not dropping from the sky.

While Chris Todd undoubtedly has the stronger arm of the two, Graham Harrell can easily make every throw asked of him in Mike Leach's offense. In fact, arm strength is not nearly as important to Leach as accuracy, reading the defense and going through one's progressions.

Todd lost out to Harrell this fall, more or less, because he did not do the cerebral things as well.

Kliff Kingsbury didn't have much of an arm of which to speak and he did fine, same for Cody Hodges. In fact, if it was all arm strength, Phillip Daugherty wouldn't have transferred to Sam Houston State last August.

If you notice, Harrell actually checked out of a large number of plays against UTEP with great success. He has a ginormous football IQ, a very firm grasp of the offense and (if he stays healthy) will be more successful than any quarterback Texas Tech has had under Leach. I feel comfortable in saying that TCU was an aberration.

Interestingly enough, the guy with the strongest arm and is probably the best NFL quarterback prospect is Arizona State transfer Derek Shaw who has to sit out this season due to NCAA transfer regulations. It will be interesting to see, next spring, whether Leach pays lip service to a quarterback battle or actually opens up the competition.

I disagree. I feel pretty comfortable in saying that, based on what he did in Lubbock, Graham Harrell was the best quarterback in the history of the Texas Tech football program.

The case:
- Co-National Player of the Year in 2008 (The Sporting News).
- Johnny Unitas Award (Best Senior QB) in 2008.
- First-Team All-American (AFCA).
- Sammy Baugh Trophy Winner (Best Passer) in 2007.
- All-time Division I FBS leader in career touchdown passes (134).
- Leading passer in Big 12/Texas Tech history (15,793 yards); second all-time in Division I FBS.
- Only quarterback in NCAA history to throw for 5,000-plus yards in multiple seasons.
- Guided the team to a 12-game win streak the spanned the the 2007 and 2008 seasons and included wins over the No. 4, No. 21, No. 23, No. 1 and No. 9 teams in the country.
- Led the team to two January bowl games in three years as a starter; the program has had four total since 1957.
- Engineered the biggest comeback in bowl history in the 2006 Insight Bowl against Minnesota.
- Only starting quarterback in school history to win three games against Texas A&M; Joe Barnes beat the Aggies twice, in 1972 and 1973.

He falls apart when he doesn't have an open primary or secondary and his line not holding forever. I think BJ was the best quarterback we had until he hurt himself doing something stupid.

Has a tech quarterback ever played for a descent amount of time in the NFL?

Damn man, it wasn't a rhetorical question. I was just asking, or was that an attack against Mike Leach? Aaron answered it for me.

Supposedly Potts is the best QB Leach has recruited so far.

my little sister is friends with him. he went to abilene high. apparently he's a really down to earth and nice guy. i know he was recruited by michigan and some others, and actually almost decided to stay in abilene and go to acu with pressure from his parents... church of christ obviously.

In terms of quarterbacks that have signed with Texas Tech in the Mike Leach era, Taylor Potts is the third-highest ranked behind Robert Johnson (JUCO) and Graham Harrell. Seth Doege, who signed with the Red Raiders in 2008, might have ended up ranked higher than Potts had he not missed his senior season with a knee injury. Denton Ryan QB Scotty Young is currently verbally committed to Texas Tech, and will likely end up bumping Potts down to fourth on this list if he signs with the Red Raiders as planned.

Interestingly enough, Texas Tech offered two quarterbacks in the class of 2006: Potts and Sam Bradford. The Red Raiders were actually the first to offer Bradford a scholarship, and he visited one of the team's practices (03/26/05) that spring. Potts committed four days later, which ended Texas Tech's pursuit of Bradford, but it would have been interesting to see what would have happened if Potts hadn't pulled the trigger so early.

Sorry, end of tangent...

Potts has a prototypical NFL frame (6-foot-5, 220-pounds) and NFL-caliber arm strength, but neither of those attributes have any bearing on whether or not he will be a successful starter in Leach's offense. Potts battled consistency a bit this spring, but there were never any questions about him being the guy and this being his team. That second part may sound awfully cliche, but Harrell struggled with that aspect of the job during his first season as a starter (2006), which affected the team's play on the field. From an NFL Draft perspective, Potts' delivery will probably hurt him a bit, but that obviously isn't a factor right now.

As far as who is best? Hard to say at this point, with Potts having never started a game before. My opinion of Harrell's standing among all-time Red Raider gunslingers has already been detailed earlier in this thread but if things swing the right way, Potts could certainly end up being Tee Martin to Harrell's Peyton Manning.

Potts is probably a bit more athletic than Harrell - who, incidentally, rushed for over 1,000 yards in his junior year at Ennis - but I wouldn't expect to see him "scramble" any more than we've seen out of his predecessors at Texas Tech. That just isn't something that quarterbacks do in Leach's offense. Heck, I would be pretty shocked if he ran more than Cody Hodges did in 2005.

What I will be interested in seeing is how often Potts checks into the run this season. He, arguably, has one of the top running back tandems in the conference in Baron Batch and Harrison Jeffers, and Potts could make his life a lot easier if he leans on them a little bit early on in his career.

Yes. Taylor Potts currently has two remaining seasons of eligibility and - barring anything unexpected - will start in 2009 and 2010.

another good thing about Potts. Not only did he do very well at Abilene High when he was there (i saw a few games myself), but one of his top receivers was Lyle Leong, who is also a receiver at Tech.
they've already had a really good connection with each other in the past, and hopefully that'll continue at tech. sort of like the harrell/crabtree relationship, except Potts and Leong are actually pretty good friends.

argh

A psychotic world we live in. The madmen are in power. How long have we known this? Faced this? And--how many of us do know it? Perhaps if you know you are insane then you are not insane. Or you are becoming sane, finally. Waking up. I suppose only a few are aware of all this. Isolated persons here and there. But the broad masses... what do they think? All these hundreds of thousands in this city, here. Do they imagine that they live in a sane world? Or do they guess, glimpse, the truth...?
