if you only got as far as a 35 shaman, you played about 5% of the game that's out there. of course you're entitled to your opinion, but that's like forming an opinion of a restaurant by what the iced tea tastes like (and yes I'm sure someone will respond with "well blah blah if they make good iced tea blah blah", whatever). I agree with Christine, the game is fun sometimes and boring other times. I just can't raid anymore it takes up too much damn time.

as far as the article goes... that lady is a stupid bitch. of course games are addictive, but putting them up with drugs & gambling? give me a break. If you call games a dangerous addiction that should have warning labels, then you gotta do the same for every possible hobby on the planet. working on cars, watching movies/tv, sewing, anything. All hobbies have the same qualities: Time/money spent, results/consequences.

Well, if a game isnt good that far into it, why would someone who has other things to do waste their time going further with it? I mean, level 35 is pretty far up there. Im sure he had to spend a lot of hours to get that far. Honestly, I watched WoW being played a lot. I like to watch other people play games because its entertaining. I never found WoW to be entertaining. In fact, I dont know how people sit there and play it. Its like owning a giga pet. After the WOW THIS IS NEAT wears off in like 3 days, you are stuck with a useless piece of shit. How that game has remained so popular for so long, I will never know. Its all a matter of opinoin, but I think he got far enough into the game to form a genuine opinion.

our primal nature's are expressed in our hobbies

primarily men play some type of game: sports, video games, gambling, etc.

while women seek alternative empowerment: pets (childbearing), hosting parties,

so basically, a guy playing wow too much is like a woman that pays too much attention to her stupid fucking pets, boyfriend, laundry, dishes, etc.

I'm not telling him to keep playing, I'm just saying you don't get a good representation of whether you like something or not by playing only such a small amount of it. How much credit would people give a movie critic that only watches the first five minutes of every movie he critiques?

honestly though the fun part of the game for me when i played all the time was the people i played with. lots of people diss wow players for being anti-social, etc, but for someone who is in a good guild of people and particpates in large raids, nothing could be further from the truth. you've got people interacting on a level that doesn't exist anywhere else. a good guild will have some form of voice communication set up, and people chat about what's going on and learn a lot about each other and make friends. I know the guild I ran for a long time, we had voice communication software set up and we'd talk about sports/news/whatever while playing the game. Grouping and raiding involves a lot of teamwork. You get forty people that you've never met all having to work together and get along to accomplish a goal. IMHO that's about as "social" as it gets.

while a different analogy might have been more fitting, im inclined to agree with him on some level

there are plenty of things that you dont have to follow all the way through to the end with to decide that you arent into it. for some, it takes half the movie. for others, it might only take 5 minutes of bad lines, amateur staging and poor lighting.

there comes a point where you decide you dont like something, and no matter how much you try to like it afterwards you just cant get into it. for him that realization came earlier than others.

sticking with the metaphor, i will site mulholland dr. a movie which one is often compelled to turn off during the first half. this portion of the movie is designed to drastically contrast with the second half.
similarly wow, segmented, is like two different games. not that one is some amazing exploration of the psyche and self-delusion brought on by lack of actualization like mulholland dr. instead, we have a game that you can make it through by yourself, that becomes an extremely team oriented game. and instead of experienced based the game becomes much more item based.

also, i do not really think the previous argument is valid. plenty of things take some getting used to, however most people already know where they stand on more dramatic issues like homosexuality. however, it can take some time to decide whether or not you like the new red hot chili peppers cd, to which i have yet to listen.

as for the girlfriend of warcraft, it is a good game for killing time in the middle of the night. i rarely play anymore; i think i am too lazy.

I figure I have played %60-70 of the game that there is ...

I leveld my old drud up to 60 and did some end-game runs, it was boring.

I got my rogue to 60, did the same.

That was a month ago and I haven't logged in since.

It's just completley lost it's appeal to me because it just takes so much fucking time to be good at it anymore, and it's just not worth it ...

I am so sick of running BWL I could puke sad.gif

I think this is a stretch, here.

What evidence do you have that it sucks? I'm not trying to defend the game (against my will, even), but blatantly saying it sucks with no evidence (and when a lot of evidence actually proves it doesn't suck, oh wait, everyone who plays this game is weakminded) is, well... stupid to say the least.

Dogmeat, you're tired of running Blackwing Lair because your guild sucks and is wiping on lab packs.

The game sucks because, for the most part, it's compeletely unoriginal. It's just a shinier version of everquest. Same formula, different graphics. The whole slow leveling, phat lewt, keep the player paying scheme that worked for sony caught on by so many different companies/games: Anarchy Online, Dark Age of Camelot, Asheron's Call and friends. However, everquest remained the king, after all, they were the first to use the formula, they were the first to perfect it. However, then you get gaming giants that have huge followings like warcraft, final fantasy, and star wars. And out came Star Wars Galaxy, FF 11, and WoW. And to no surprise, these games were HUGE and wildly popular.

But not because they're good. Not because they're any better than DAoC, AC, and AO. It's just, they had a bigger following before their release, so naturally, they raked in the $$$.

All these games are engineered to be addictive. It couldn't be any more obvious, when they all do.the.same.fucking.thing.over.and.over. God damn, every one of these games have expansion packs that increase the level cap. That give you "new" worlds and new phat lewt, and maybe a new playable race to level to 60 (I mean now 70) which will take no less than alteast two months of your time (and money). And you keep paying $50 for each update, on top of the $15 a month you pay to play the game you own. If they weren't doing this on purpose, if it weren't engineered to keep the player paying, they wouldn't all do the same thing. They all wouldn't have the same style.

But yet they do. All just clones of the other. They all have the same business model, same strategy, same game.

Same game.

They're all the same. I've played most of them. I know. And each and every one of them, from a true enterainment perspective...suck. The game isn't fun. The only thing that keeps you going, that keeps you doing the same three quests over and over again is that faith that the game gets incredibly fun later. And when you finally get there, even if it isn't, after three months of your LIFE given to the game, you sure as hell will believe the game is fun, because the last thing any person will ever do is admit they were wrong. Especially to themselves.

Because you know, if the end game were really that fun, why hasn't a mmorpg come out with super fast leveling just so you can get to the end game and really "enjoy" it?

Because too many people would realize how boring every game gets eventually and after one month, there wouldn't be any subscribers.

Smoking would just be a fad if they didn't make it addictive.

too weak minded to realize the product sucks? this is possibly one of the funniest things I've seen you say to me on here.

and if the game sucks so bad why is it the most successful computer/video game in history?

im pretty sure you have taken up every spot on the techsans hall of fame for dumbest things ever said so yeah... laugh away. You pretty much make yourself look like a huge jackass in every NPR thread you post in. To me, the same goes here.

for the most part it sounds like the people who complain about the game complain because its too hard. "slow leveling" what are you 8? if you could bust through a game as huge and developing as WoW in a matter of 2 weeks then it would be a stupid game.
it is the most popular game in history and youd have to be a jackass to think a majority of people are weak minded or "stupid"

A majority of WoW players are socially inept. sorry to say it, but its true. Additionally, I dont think the game is hard at all. Im not one for video games at all really. Ill occassionally play some multiplayer XBOX games like ESPN NHL 2K_ or Bond or something with my friends IN PERSON, but a lot of people use WoW as a social outlet and well... I hate to step on toes here, but thats fucking gay. LETS ALL GANG UP AND GO KILL OTHER PEOPLE TOGETHER CUZ IT WILL BE FUNNY HARDY HAR HAR..... pathetic. Weak minded?.... yes. The game was designed to suck you weak minded fools in. I have no qualms with the people who play it when they are bored or have nothing else to do because we all have our little hobbies to do when we are bored... like me posting on Techsans. I do see a problem with people who stay up all hours of the night playing and then miss class, or do that instead of going out with their friends or making real life friends. Yeah, gay.

I dunno, there is definatley something to be said for WoW's success coming from it's already rather large fanbase.

I would have never started playing the game if it wasn't that I was already familiar with the Warcraft universe from the first three games, and enjoyed the storyline, etc ...

With that said, the precursor for MMORPG's were just as addicting as current ones are....And with that said I mean text-based MUD games, like CircleMUD, DikuMUD, etc .... I dbout very many of you have even ever heard of an old school text-based MUD game let alone wasted countless hours of your life playing one like I did ...

But, the game model for WoW is directly descended from oldschool mud games .... it's nearly identical, even when it comes to cheating ... heh smile.gif

I dunno, WoW was fun for awhile but then the gameplay model of time-based combat based almost entirley off of how well equipped your character is got OLD OLD OLD OLD OLD....

WoW is not a hard game per se to play, but in order to be good at it you have to spend ENTIRLEY too much time playing it in order to gear up, and that's basicaly why I stopped playing...

The game is mature enough now that if you actually wanna be really good at PvP you pretty much are fucked unless you have a MINIMUM of a full tier-2 armor set for your respective class ... I mean yeah you can still get honor when you win at BG,s but who the FUCK wants to never get any killing blows, etc?

I dunno, I am hoping with the expansion coming out they've radically changed the game play to make it more conducive to being GOOD at playing the game rather than spending ungodly amounts of time on it to be good ....

Slow leveling is hard? Beating a grand master at chess is hard. Learning how to play the violin is hard. Mindlessly clicking your mouse (and by mindlessly, I mean no thought processes involved) over and over and over again waiting for your exp bar to fill up after a few four or five hours just to do it all over again on different graphics with a different name is not hard.

Do you know what is hard? Justifying wasting the good years of your life in front of a video game while everyone else is starting their careers, relationships, or getting educated. That's what's hard about WoW.

Let's face it. Trying to convince a bunch of WoW junkies that it's bad for them is like trying to convince a bunch of drug addicts that cocain is bad for them.

I say fuck them all. If they want to hurt themselves, live and let die.

So, what I'm reading here is that the people who abuse WoW are the weakminded ones and the ones who need to change? Or that EVERYONE who plays this game is like that?

So playing video games with your friends in person is different how? How would you suggest I socially interact with my friends who don't live in town? I don't think I could interact with them any better than playing the same game and talking to them on a headset. Also how exactly is you playing Bond or NHL 2K with your friends not using video games "as a social outlet"? Lastly what would you say to someone who could interact with and make friends with people they don't know, AND still goes out with their friends several times a week? I suppose being graduated and working (without having homework and studying) I have more free time than a college student would, but it would seem to me if you could do both you'd actually have social interaction with more people than someone who didn't play online games.

Once again I think the philosophy professors would be upset. Giving "missing class" as a reason to bag on WoW makes no sense at all. It's right up there with the "guns kill people" and "i'm suing mcdonalds for making me fat" arguments. A person is late for or misses class because they choose to, not because they played a game, or went out and got wasted the night before.

It's ironic to me how some of you guys say a person can have no social life and no friends on the computer, and yet still actively participate in this community online. Whether you love me or hate me, the vast majority of people on here have never met me (or very few times), and yet we still socially interact on a daily basis. Of course there's your people who play for 12 hours a day, which is bad for your health/life/etc, but it's no different than someone who stares at myspace all day, or watches tv all day.

It doesn't matter whether you love wow or hate it. Either way, it's JUST A FUCKING GAME. If you hate it, don't play it. If you love it, respect other people's right not to like it. It's as simple as that.

Your first paragraph about "the majority" is fucking dumb. Take a lesson in English there, buddy. That sentence makes sense. WoW players is one group of people.... the majority of which are socially inept. Dont be such a homo.

Umm I have seen the game enough to have an opinion. I sat and watched hours upon hours upon hours of it being played. I never touched the keyboard and mouse when it was on...that you are correct on; however, I think I have enough exposure to the game to have an opinion.

Im not reading the rest because your first two paragraphs, as usual, were stupid enough. You can pick on my degree all day long. I dont care. The fact of the matter remains that you have the most pathetic arguing skills on these boards and you try to make me look like an idiot to validate your point. Here is a lesson in philosophy...thats a horrible arguing style...rather than hitting my points dead on, you feel the need to devalidate me. Thats cool. I can take it. Doesnt bother me one bit coming from you. Youre a dumbass

Your first paragraph about "the majority" is fucking dumb. Take a lesson in English there, buddy. That sentence makes sense. WoW players is one group of people.... the majority of which are socially inept. Dont be such a homo.

Baseless opinion. Let's see fact.

I'm taking a break from studying for the Mcat so i'll add me 2 cents in.

I think Greg got it right, being relative. A 35 level character is hundreds of playing hours. Comparing that to 5 minues of a movie is quite stupid. Its about liking the style of play. I could play final fantasy 7 through Midgard (or whatever that big city was called) and realize that I do not like the game.

I played Mud's around 93' when it was on a BBS and only 4 people would be signed in at the same time (My friend Brett and I dialed in at the same time to go questing together).
Along came the internet and with that MUDs, and several ones through AOL and Compuserv, like Dragonmasters. We belonged to clans and helped eachother. In real life I played warhammer, 40k when it came out and magic (started beta). These type of people were the core of the original MMORPG's. For me it was the fantasy that I liked, some poeple it was their whole life. I played UO on a player ran shard, but was drifting away.

Newer generation has much more diversity that the older one. Almost everyone grows up with a computer now, so the crowd gets more diverse. You can still find alot of people who are socially inept online, that will never change. I personally grew out of online roleplaying, but still like going back to that lifestyle every once in a while. It takes too much to get a good character in one of these games.

As for WoW, I think its addicting for some people. Its not necessarly a bad thing, but can become one. People like Jim will defend it with zealotry, while others like Jessica will bash it. To me its just a game that I don't like. It is not a hard game to master, takes too much time and is not something I enjoy. The game depends on working with a good clan and going raiding once you max out your character. I see my friends who play it spend about 20 nights raiding with their clan so they can get tier 2 equipment.

But for some people, this game is fun for them. It doesn't mean they are weak minded. I like playing Master of Orion on the occasion, although I know how the play the game quite well. Some people have fun with their clan. For some its their only social outlet, for some its just something for fun. I know both popular and unpopular people who play this game.

Everyone just needs to chill out about it. Stop worrying what people think about the game, they don't play it and its just a game. Stop complaining about it unless its affecting someone (i know a guy who failed out of school becuase of WoW)
It should just be a game.

Even if the friends are douchebags, that doesn't make Jim anti-social.

And they're not, at least not most of them. I'm a lot more anti-social than Jim is and I don't play WoW nearly as much.
