Driver's license fees could jump 300 percent with new law, official says
ASSOCIATED PRESS

AUSTIN (AP) - Texans applying for or renewing drivers' licenses could pay much higher fees and wait in longer lines once a federal law standardizing cost takes effect in 2008, a state lawmaker says.

Texas fees could jump to more than $100 from the current $24, a 300 percent increase, when the federal government begins requiring states to issue uniform drivers' licenses, what many consider a de facto national identification card, said state Sen. Leticia Van De Putte, D-San Antonio.

The change also would eliminate online and mail renewals and would require renewing motorists to produce Social Security cards and birth certificates in person at Department of Public Safety offices.

Van De Putte got briefed on the new state-issued, federally approved licenses because next month she will become president of the National Conference of State Legislatures.

QFT. A slight increase in fees is fine, but quadrupling the price? wtf?

why not?

The two main concerns, as I understand them are:

1) Cost. Will the new cards be "tamper-proof" enough to justify the high cost of the new system? The total cost is estimated at $2.5 billion, according to the ACLU. That's not terribly high, but it's nothing to sneeze at.

2) Privacy. Along with national standards for issuing ID's comes database sharing between the states. While this in itself is not bad, with it comes the temptation to the federal government to use that information illegally or in legally questionable ways.

yeah but how else are the hippie leeches going to get their communis--- ehh, socialized health care system? because people can't just show up and get it for free like they already do now, so we need a huge project and system to track it all, duh.

this is exactly the kind of thing that happens when the fucking left bitches and whines and lobbies and wastes taxpayer dollars trying to get, and then complains when it actually happens because the government is "intruding" and "trying to control their lives".

and why should our government have the right to know who is actually in this country? that's just crazy talk.

People can get healthcare for free now? That explains why the health of low-income Americans is roughly equivalent to that of a third world banana republic!

Yeah, I'm not sure what exactly the ACLU and like ilk think the government will be able to do with the information on ID cards. Oh geez, they'll know our name, address, SSN, height, weight, and eye color? Uhhh.... so?

While I must admit I have a gut reaction against the idea of a national ID system, I can't really reason my way into rationally disliking the idea.

Its not the "government" i am worried about, its the individual people inside teh government and the populous itsef. By making everything standardized and easier to keep track of, it just makes it easier for people to unrightfully get a hold of that information and more information at once.

I disagree. I think if the government could come up with a standardized way to catalogue and inventory that kind of personal info, it would help make identity theft a bit tougher to commit.

My opinion on the national ID card is a big "meh." I really don't think it's a big deal one way or another. This means that instead of saying Texas, my drivers license will say USA? Worst case scenario, I have to carry TWO IDs in my wallet.

Well with the Real ID system, it won't *technically* be a national ID. They're still state-issued and should have the state listed on them, but I think the layout, information listed, and documentation needed to get the card are all standardized.
