When you post 5 billion news threads, it would be nice if you provided some commentary besides that in the thread title.

impala needs to remove his lips from microsoft's dick.

that being said, im sure a lot of the kinks will be worked out before final release. Im sure microsoft doesnt want to pull another xbox 360 stunt where they push the release and it has problems.

more like you guys just hate anything microsoft. they could make a machine that cures all disease, solves everyone's problems, and costs $0.50. you guys would still hate it and have no objective opinion on it.

bottom line of this dumbass thread. software has beta releases for a reason, dipshits.

microsoft has done a decent job with the battletech/mechwarrior series.

they just should have tossed elementals in mechwarrior 4.

shut the fuck up already impala. stop playing the oppressed victim in the minority. most of the people on this forum use XP, you aren't anywhere near a minority. The only difference is, the rest of us can tell when something needs to be fixed and when something's so flawed that it's not even worth buying. I seriously doubt that people have a personal vendetta against microsoft; they have a vendetta against crappy software that leaves them open to many security problems as well as fails to fucking work half the damn time.

Yes, software has betas for a reason. They also have ALPHAS for a fucking reason, as well as workbuilds. compare microsoft's betas to almost any other company's betas, half the time microsoft's tend to suck a lot more. exceptions are the windows antispyware, at least from my experience, but i rarely used it before i decided i just didn't like it. WMP11 and vista, on the other hand... WMP11 crashed on load every time when i installed it, vista would freeze when a usb2.0 device was plugged in and the system idled. So yeah. That SUCKS. Oh, and don't even get me STARTED on the IE7 beta. these should at the very least be CLOSED betas, considering they all have so many security flaws in them that they don't need to be floating around in public domain. (I know Vista is MSDN only, but the other two aren't. actually, IE7 might be, i forget. WMP11 isn't, i know that for sure.)

Realistically, they should be staying in house as developmental alphas.

considering that there's almost nothing NEW left in vista and it's basically a facelifted XP now, there's little to no excuse for it being in such a shitty fucking state.

END OF THREAD BEFORE IMPALA GHEYS UP THE ENTIRE COMPUTERS FORUM AGAIN.

right.

on the fly file search/indexing could be nice. The built in imaging could be nice for backup purposes.

but right, keep goin on !

regardless, I wouldn't use it for a few months. No reason to use an OS for at least 6 months so that it gets some updates etc

the old strategy used to be stay 3 OS releases behind Microsoft.

Now it's more or less 6-12 months, seeing as it took them 5 years to release a new OS (not counting server 2003.)

I guess vista is considered a new OS. I just seems like XP with a new shell and a search feature. But that doesn't seem like a big jump it's pretty much just using some database shit to group things together.

vista more or less IS xp. they took out all the good bits and they're hobbling together the searchy system on top. hell, google desktop does that shit.

probably the best bit about vista is the new command shell, aka Monad, which you can also download for XP...

...and unfortunately, will lead to even more CRIPPLING hacker attacks, considering you can essentially write a short script that can use DLLs and such straight from the prompt. essentially, you could write/run an entire program from the prompt... it's powerful as hell, but quite possibly too powerful for it's own good when you look at it from a security point of view.

i dunno what else to say other than what i have said.

beta software will have problems. not sure why this is front page news. the whole point of beta testing software (key word "test") is to find any problems and work them out before release. call me a MS fanboy or say whatever you want, it's how software development works. as far as I can tell you can't even get the beta unless you've got a MSDN subscriber license (or obviously through some illegal means or other hookup).

Yeah more or less... except for a completely new file system (essentially a database), native 64 bit code support, completely new managed-code APIs, and completely new shell interface. But the file system, native system APIs and user interface aren't important/major parts of an OS or anything.

the "totally new" file system is not the "totally new" filesystem it was originally supposed to be. WinFS is essentially NTFS with a sql database, or something to that effect. Not much more special than what google desktop does, not to mention apple did this last year.

Native 64 bit support? Ever hear of Windows XP 64-Bit edition?

The new shell interface (monad) is available (already) for XP; i already wrote that. You lose there too.

So are a bunch of those APIs.

So yeah. There isn't anything new here.

no it's not winfs, and i didnt say it was either. it is a totally new file system for windows though. it's not NTFS. and what does google desktop have to do with anything? you're trying to tell me windows xp = windows vista.

i wasn't aware that windows xp = windows xp 64 bit (which isn't even widely available)

i guess you misunderstood what i meant by shell. i wasnt talking about a command prompt i was talking about the aero gui.

which ones? show me where I can download and run winfx APIs on windows xp (which uses the win32 api). even if you could run them they don't run natively it'd be just some developer simulated tool.

i never said they're new, or that no one else has done anything similar. you said windows xp is more or less the same as vista and I'd have to differ with ya on that. the core parts of the OS are all completely different/updated.

Yea, windows xp uses the win32 api, but all the new stuff in vista is in .NET. All the stuff they're doing with the new searches and stuff is all built on ADO.NET. There was a video with a couple of the developer teams explaining how easy stuff would be to program for vista because a lot of things people were already familiar with through .NET.
