anyone ever had Borst or Gibson as a professor for Physics 1408? they're both teaching this summer and i was hoping for some insight as to whom the more effective professor might be?

Goddamn Billy, you're an ass. Aquos, Borst is supposed to be pretty tough. Some say he's a bad instructor, some say he's good, everyone pretty much agrees that he's a tough grader.

what's his grading scheme like?
does the HW count for anything? pop quizzes? I was planning on getting a private tutor for that class, I only need that one class for my major, but I have to take it Summer I and I have to pass in order to graduate on time. Would the private tutor be a good idea? I figured it would help since the class would be going real fast. |

Yeah, getting a tutor would be a good idea. If you think you might have trouble in the class, set up arrangements with a tutor now, because with summer there's really not such a thing as "better late than never". By the time you'll realize that you need a tutor, you'll be screwed.
The physics department has an online list of tutors at http://www.phys.ttu.edu/tutors.html, but you might be better off going by the dept in person to get the most recent list -- they don't update the website very often. Also look in the UD, you might see someone advertised there. -------------------- |

I had Gibson for a physics class a couple years ago, it wasnt cal based though. I thought he was a good teacher, made physics understandable to me. I dont think he graded hw, but we did have quizzes every now and then.

Oh and though its not one of the profs you listed, never take Lodhi, that man is evil. Worst teacher I have ever had, I didnt learn anything in his class, no one did. I failed every one of his tests and all of the hw, and Im sure I bombed the final, but somehow I made a C in the class. I guess he couldnt fail everyone, cause no one I talked to in our class was passing.

I know a lot of stupid people at Tech who took Gibson. They got A's...without cheating
 ... so either he is a good teacher or he is really easy

well I had signed up for Gibson originally along with the only lab they offered. However, if I take Borst then I can take another class (which conflicts with Gibson's section). The other class is pretty important b/c its a design elective and the prof teaching it is supposed to be a joke. This way I can definately dedicate more time to Physics, but I do think I'll definately need a tutor. I haven't had physics since high school, and even then I don't remember anything.

from my experience they never use the book shit, only the ut shit... which i hated...
you're better off not even buying the book because the physics profs never use it |

Borst has e-mailed everyone signed up for his section informing them of the text book, it's Physics for Scientists and Engineers by Serway, he said to get the 5th or 6th edition, I went ahead and ordered it for $20 shipped off amazon, just hope it comes in time.
btw I might PM you for those Physics answers if they end up being online from UT

Yep, that's the old book. Frankly I think the UT homework system (which they'll likely use with this book) is better than the Mastering Physics system that they have with the other one. The only thing that's nicer about Mastering Physics is that they have a little hints system built it for some of the problems.
