Well, according to the chart, overweight people live longer than normal weight people. That chart says nothing about normal weight.... it only compares overweight to underweight and severely obese. So basically, the chubby kids will live longer than the anorexics and whales.
But then again, the government's body mass index has been criticized for a while. IIRC, it doesn't take into account whether the body mass is fat or muscle. Thus I would assume that bulkier people who exercise a lot would be more likely to fall into that category. But that's just conjecture on my part. |

Am I the only person here that realizes that the chart says nothing about people who have a BMI between 18.5 and 25, which is what is considered to be healthy? Jesus Christ...Im dumb but even I see this. The person that wrote the line at the top of the chart is a fucking idiot. You cannot compare underweight and overweight, and use those results to say that overweight people live longer than normal weight

"Thousands of excess deaths in 2004, compared with normal weight." The chart uses normal people as a baseline. The article to go with the chart. http://www.nytimes.com/2007/11/07/health/0...amp;oref=slogin
QUOTE Linking, for the first time, causes of death to specific weights, they report that overweight people have a lower death rate because they are much less likely to die from a grab bag of diseases that includes Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, infections and lung disease. And that lower risk is not counteracted by increased risks of dying from any other disease, including cancer, diabetes or heart disease. QUOTE The new study began several years ago when the investigators used national data to look at death risks according to body weight. They concluded that, compared with people of normal weight, the overweight had a decreased death risk and the underweight and obese had increased risk. QUOTE “Health extends far beyond mortality rates,†said Dr. JoAnn Manson, chief of preventive medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.

basically, in summation, most folks who workout only do so for cosmetic reasons, so they look pretty but are actually as unhealthy as the common Joe who is sitting his fat ass on the couch. That's the dumbest fucking statement I've ever read in four years of posting on here. Six months ago I was a mess. Drinking every night, eating fast food every meal, rarely working out, sitting on my ass watching too much tv, etc. My blood pressure and cholesterol were too high for someone my weight (190) and age. I looked like shit Since then I've started eating better, drinking less, working out and running more, and generally being more active. I now run 3-4 miles every evening with relative ease and can do about 15 reps on bench at 200 pounds. My blood pressure is now slightly below normal, and my cholesterol has gone down a bit (heard this isn't exactly an overnight process). My diet is much better and I drink whisky about once a week or less. I have more endurance, I'm stronger, I'm quicker, and I look a helluva lot better. Of course I did it for cosmetic reasons. The better shape I'm in, the more self confidence I have. Nothing wrong with that. I guaranfuckingtee you that I'm healthier than someone who sits on their ass and plays video games all day. I know this for a fact because I skate and play basketball with a bunch of guys. Earlier this summer I was getting schooled. Now I'm schooling them. The only person who would say something as colossally stupid as that is someone who is overweight and is trying to justify being a lazy worthless fatass. Keep telling yourself that porky. It isn't true, but maybe you'll eventually believe it is and it'll make everything ok -------------------- ![]() ![]() |

It isn't true, but maybe you'll eventually believe it is and it'll make everything ok It may be dumb to you, but if you ask most folks why they workout, they won't say, "oh, its for my health..." Fact is, most people workout to keep up with the media-projected images. Just walk around the rec center...I remember plenty of times going there and hearing girls complaining about being fat, and guys lifting weights and looking at themselves with admiration. You had a stimulus that shocked you into healthier behaviors. A large population of people workout with any knowledge of nutrition and physiology....which is why so many people will ONLY lift weights, or ONLY do some cardio, or they will workout but maintain a fatty diet, or keep eating oversized portions. Perhaps you should have read my WHOLE statement....just shows the only one who is stupid, is you. |

is the water method using Archimedes principal? (displacement vs mass) yes, it is using Archimedes Principal....so when you do the testing, they have you deflate your lungs as much as possible through exhalation, and you have to be completely submerged. Because bone and muscle are more dense than water, a person with a larger percentage of fat free mass will weigh more in the water and have a lower percent body fat. Conversely, fat floats. Therefore, a large amount of fat mass will make the body lighter in the water and have a higher percent body fat. |

perhaps fat people live longer because they have less risk of injury because they do less.
I still think this is stupid and contradicts years worth of research. Also, I still think this chart is fucking stupid. |

perhaps fat people live longer because they have less risk of injury because they do less. I actually thought the same thing strangely but couldn't justify it enough to say it. Duane, who gives a fuck why people work out? Whether it's to get in better shape, to get laid more often, to get a better job, whatever. At least they're trying, unlike you. I can't imagine you've ever worked out or eaten a proper meal in your life -------------------- ![]() ![]() |
